What's In A Name? (CMDR Name Thread)

I've been really surprised how many commanders pick a name that looks like a 90s BBS handle - maybe people don't realise you can change it and assumed Frontier wanted a "username" rather than something that would go down in a First Discovered for ever.

This name is from a theme I've been using since I first read it in about 1996. The registration mark matches too. I went for this because it happens to be a pun which fits nicely with procedural generation AND my semi-freelance playstyle.

I'm not going to tell you the theme because the situation in Fernando Poo is delicate enough already...

My nick was initially inspired by the track Kimosabe by BT from the Need for speed underground soundtrack back in the days...
But mostoften the "pure" name isn't available so I finally went with the suffix _X ...

In the beginning I didn't even know the meaning and just thought it sounded somewhat cool and kept it.

On a sidenote: I just searched for the soundtrack of NFSU and it was still a blast to listen to the tracks

My two alt commanders in Elite are pretty different and were meant to be only funny, Sven Bømwøllen and Tigerduck
(the first one the black sheep from the computer game and the second on a character from the children's book „Oh, How Beautiful Panama Is" by Janosch)

Mine is a similar story to old duck but on the xbox side of consoles.

My original gamertag was inspired by a 80's welsh comedy on S4C I used to watch in my teenage years.

After porting over to GFN I decided to split the name into 2 words, especially when I learnt that Torri is an actual name in some countries, and loose the silly numbers at the end.

Originally when I created the name IstvaanDCIV, I was thinking in terms of a handle.

But I'm also kind of into the idea of leaning into my initial choice while taking it in a different direction. I like to imagine that my CMDR is a cyborg, and that DCIV (604) is a serial number that replaced the surname of his previous, fleshier identity.

Born, raised and live in today. Know yourself.

Originally intended as a personal health message to stop drinking tea with far too much sugar. It was like a post bf3 & 4 come down as it was a bit much... considering my age.
Then, someone told me the tale of "Phat Mike", the original Space Banana who got squished by a cargo container in Sol so i took on the role.
I have since corrupted it somewhat, generally just playing with the idea "what would Space Banana do".
I just made the name more than it was... for roleplay giggles and to promote the alien perspective.
Just for fun.

I have been known to eat the odd banana... or two.
No sugar in tea either, so it's a win.
:)

I had thought it was because you were the 604th member of the family with that name.

My commander name goes back to 1993 when I played Frontier: Elite II (FE2). I had two series of save games COOPER._NN and KRIEGER._NN that recorded the progression of the two characters I played in that game. Cooper was a merchant who got filthy rich and flew a Panther Clipper in the end. Krieger was a mercenary working for both the Federation and the Empire. He flew many types of ships but mostly a Cobra Mk III or an Asp Explorer and made it to Deadly (but not quite Elite) in the end.

Some time after the Kickstarter Frontier asked us to choose a commander name and I chose Cooper. It turned out Cooper was taken already so Krieger it is.
