Whats the point of squadrons?

Squadrons are a social feature, and Elite is just not a social game. Why do I say that? in Elite the guy with the biggest guns gets to tell everyone else what to do, and the only way to get around that is to be either in a different game mode or just plain far away. That does not make for social gameplay.

Your perception of the game is very different to that of mine and the group I play with.

Oh I'm not saying that at all. I'm just saying it's not a very useful feature for some players. PvPers will probably make a lot of use of it.

You can play solo, and still have a common goal using totally unattended cooperative gameplay with other players. As long as instructions are clear, you don't even need to leave Solo to play with other people towards a common goal.

Not just pvpers. Miners, explorers, anyone with a minor faction they want to support. There are many elements to the game where players come together. Ever heard of the Teabaggers? What about all the racers? This isn’t only for pvp by a long shot.

That should not be a huge problem, you'd only need to be approved once and then you're in the squadron.

I'm going to guess you're mostly a PvP player, in which case the game probably works pretty well for you. I mostly do PvE and I'm really bad at combat.

I've met well over 100 players in elite, I was part of an inara squadron of 120 people and now I'm with a squadron of about 50 and and those are just two out of over 100 different squads that already exists. I'm also on Xbox which has one of the smallest communities of all the platforms. I'm not sure how you can say elite isn't a social game. Just because you've never taken part in the social community doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Then why are you arguing so much against it?

lol! in elite the guy with the biggest guns could very well be sobbing in open or in the blockverse without anything to point his big guns at. [haha]

what elite is not is a multiplayer game in the classical sense, but it is indeed a social game whose connections extend very much beyond the game interface. that people mostly grind in parallel doesn't mean they don't meet, or that they aren't on the same page. they do solve puzzles collectively, gather data, topple governments, etc. they coordinate all this with 3rd party tools, now they get a nice in-game system to at least band together and get some early news.

see above. we don't know yet how it will work out but it is pretty obvious it will be attractive to a lot of players. you seem very much obsessed with gankers, funny thing is while pvpers might use the leaderboards, you don't need much organization to gank random noobs. yet you forget the explorer groups, the powerplayers, the bgs ants, the player managed factions, etc ...

he's just trying his best not to like squadrons. [yesnod]

Hmmm... I feel like some seal clubbing today. Hop into my GankDeLance, go into the squadrons screen... yep. Select both "PvE" and "Roleplay", and wait for sucke... er fellow players to invite me. I think my evening's all set up to deliver some emergent content.
Which would be why there are ranks within the organisation structure - a new recruit won't be able to do anything, but a player with higher rank can kick the troll.

Because I'm one of those people who it doesn't seem very useful to :) I don't have a problem with others using it though.

Firstly, someone who joins the group under false pretenses is going to expect to be kicked out as soon as he shows his true colors. He'll just get his lulz and move on to another group. Secondly, rank doesn't neuter his guns.

Heheheh, not if my squadron is solo you won't. But yes, it does seem griefer-orientated tbh, so open explorers/traders be wary! :)

Since I am a Nobby No Friends :) Squadrons won't effect me much at all but I am very happy for those that want it, FD seems to have covered a lot of the wants and requirements for all of you.

However I do wish FD would consider a cut down version of the Squadron mechanics for the lone wolf player, we don't need the whole invite and team management bits, likewise the comms but it would be nice to be able to create a 'FLEET', give the fleet a name, assign a logo, pledge to a minor faction etc. And for me personally, it would be great if there could be a way to apply livery changes across my entire fleet, not individually (yeah I am lazy and always forget one ship or some other idiot thing that only I can do lol).

I haven't seen anything that says you can't do that. Just pay the 10Mcr or whatever and you can create your own squadron.

Don’t know about how other groups will go about things but at ours we generally get to know players before letting them in. That pretty much stops what you’re talking about dead.

I play alone and so am not that interested but I am sure it will be great for those that have groups of people they play with.

It is just like guilds for almost any mmorpg type game.

Let's say in a few months there's a huge exploration trip out somewhere (eg: Distant Worlds 2), and you plan on being a part of it. What better way to be apart of that event than to join the associated Squadron?

This of course highlights the major issue with FD's Squadrons, only being able to join one (a seemingly needless limitation). For other CMDRs to do that above when going on that trip, they'll have to choose between either leaving long standing Squadrons, or not being able to join the exploration Squadron in question.

Now if they could simply join that exploration Squadron in addition to their existing ones, and fly under that Squadron while out on the trip? Done! - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/454569-Only-one-Squadron-at-a-time

That's probably the only way to mitigate this thing.
