What's with all the guys using female avatars?

What was sick about it? Enlighten me?
Edit:
To elaborate on the question: how did you derive that I was advocating objectification (as defined in the derogatory sense where a persons value is striped down) or that I was suggesting the boys were getting any sexual gratification from their female avatars?

Hi Ozram,

What sickened me, my friend, is that I'm coming from the point of view of being a male r a p e (That word got filtered) survivor and domestic abuse survivor and it hits too close to home.

There was a time when I thought that feminism was about respect, but it appears over time to have evolved into an empowerment movement, as if it learned the meaning of the phrase "If you can't beat them, join them."

To see someone, or part of someone, as an object for your pleasure is what leads to the things that happened to me; things I would not wish on anyone and I am **** sure I'm not going to let happen again to me. Whether you, or the feminist movement, think that's acceptable it never will be for me.

I'm not going to apologise if that offends you, even though its what I want to do.

(Oh, and you weren't suggesting that people were getting gratification, the people you were answering were... :) )

It doesn't offend me in the least. You're a survivor among many of something horrendous and all too common. I'm not certain how it relates to anything I've said however. I do not condone the dehumanisation of anyone and objectification falls well within that category and indeed allows for the abhorrent behaviour you reference. That is not the same as attraction or appreciation of the human form (or in the specifics of this discussion, the female form).
Edit:
To lay it squarely on the topic of this thread: I don't believe boys and men playing as female characters in Elite dangerous (or games in general) is in anyway related to abusive behaviour and the dehumanisation of women.

Hey at least their not naked like in Conan , and looking all cartoon Women perfect and all .. so you wander up and say ..'hi there' like my sword' ?

Only to hear a MALE voice say yeah it looks good .. Yikes !!.

After about the 5th naked female ran past saying HI in a baritone voice.

I gave up on the Idea Women are Women these days online

Had some time away from the forums recently, because I haven't been playing much.

And this is the second-top thread on the list.

So we're having this discussion YET AGAIN, are we? And 17 pages' worth of it as well? Even though the count of how many times this has been 'discussed' on games forums must look something like the US national debt figure by now.

Look, I know everyone's got their reliable old stock of jokes, mockery, veiled accusations, defences, justifications, progressive or "anti-political-correctness" statements, or jibes at the expense of LGBT people and we need to give them an airing every time this comes up. But really, this OP warranted one of two responses depending on his own intentions.

For legitimate curiosity: "Because games with roleplaying or character creation elements allow for imagination and don't limit people to being who they are in real life. People have lots of reasons for creating the characters they play. Also, welcome to games."

For implied disapproval: "Because the game allows them to. Deal with it."

This generally has nothing to do with politics or LGBT, this is a general thing an enormous amount of gamers do in games, personally I see it as a form of escape from their RL, which they should fully be allowed to do in my opinion, course some of it is plain sexism too, but yeah, the question asked in this thread isn't an attack on anyone, unless the major male gaming community has a political or LGBT reason for their action, which seems unlikely, some, sure, as many as are seen in games upon games out there? I have my doubts.

Although the thread has long since moved past the point of the title, here is my explanation, such as it is :

If I play as a man in a game, I have to play as someone who resembles me.
If that person resembles me, I feel they are me, and act accordingly, limiting my experience to only things that are authentic to my own personality.
Playing as a woman therefore is so obviously not me, that I can roleplay any way I wish, from axe-crazy through to absolute Paladin.

It's a slightly curious quirk of my psychology that I have accepted and embraced. And that's why I play as women.

Especially in 3rd person games I pick female avatars. It's not hard to understand, I prefer looking at women's (fem-alien's) bottoms, hence female avatars.

Note: I have nothing against anyone who makes alternative lifestyle choices, if you like men's bottoms i'm cool with that.

also females often block less picture, the abov i a great example of how 3rd peron succks when you can't see whts in front of you porperly. Worstc ase fro me was dead space. here take that felt like 25% relevant screenplace blockign guy.

Ahhh so you see a character that looks female, played by someone with a male name.

Always wanted to say this back at the crazy folk "how dare you assume my pilots gender!"

Actually this is one of few games I made a toon that looked similar too me, as I don't have to stare at its all day and male and female size makes no difference to view (were in a giant chair)

After reading this thread, I think I will make my avatar male :D

Kitty

Feel free! :D Al trough my main char usually is a male, but i role played with females, have / had Female characters. No! Not in that way! That's somewhat makes other people to question your sexual orientation... :p
Nothing bad with this, and in ED you cannot "sexualise" chars, and at least for a pretty good reason. 0 G Pilot (space)suits are necessary. But still feeling strange i can't adjust my char body parameters i mean if nothing else but height muscle and fat mass please?

My wife made my Halo-Me.

I'm actually kind of afraid she'll get angry if I delete/change her now. She did spend almost 2hrs getting her to where she's at.

Almost wish the game allowed you to save presets to quickly change to/from.

CMDR Jak (account #1) is an AI that was originally copied from a male human's mind. That AI was later copied to create a cyborg from a brain-dead, but otherwise healthy female body.

CMDR Seneh (account #2) is a female cyborg with her original mind, but the computer components used had been "infected" by CMDR Jak's AI in an attempt to escape their body.

Also, as noted above many times:

1) if I'm going to see a picture repeatedly for hundreds or thousands of hours, I prefer to look at females;
2) free stuff -- in games where it's easy to give things away, female characters are the target of random acts of kindness *way* more often than male ones

1) Your masculinity is secure in the eyes of the forum, I have no doubt.
2) This is another justification commonly offered by people who feel a need to excuse their character choices. I cannot speak for all women players, but I've yet to experience this tremendous benevolence bestowed upon female characters.
