When are geological/biological sites etc going to be back in Odyssey?

Then link to it!

Never mind, I found what you are refering to, and it appears to have nothing there to support your position, you are wrong, simply wrong!

Managed to find Crystalline Shards on several HIP 36601 bodies (using the new DSS heatmap). Not a single Crystalline Cluster attached
Find a suitable body with high G5 raw material rate. Use your DSS to map it
Using the heatmap and filters try to locate Crystalline Shards on surface (No POI anymore , just random wandering on colored location)
Land and embark in your SRV. No way to find crystalline clusters.

So nowhere in there regarding the heatmap not working, it's working as intended, this is how a heapmap works, it's a density map and increases the likelihood of finding a particular item in a particular area. This is only about the mats not being present on the shards, and that is correct, they aren't present.

What is wrong with your reading comprehension?
This is working as expected - the blue areas highlight locations where organic life is supported on this planet. There is no longer a "heat map" as this was causing some confusion.
It's blue or transparent. That's it.

That one?

For organics, appears working as intended, coloured areas give a higher chance of finding geo and bio

There is no longer a "heat map" as this was causing some confusion.

Curious that people don't understand what a heapmap is, still it's working as intended, coloured areas show volcanic sites, non-coloured areas show areas with no sites, still says nothing about geo sites being the same.

Nothing, that's a different link to what I was reading, I was referring to one link and you were referring to another if you had bothered to link as you should have when referring to a statement elsewhere on the thread or the forum then it wouldn't have been a problem , and it doesn't matter, that's how it is from now on then, it's not a bug or an issue, because people don't understand how heatmaps work they had to change to it to the simplified version so people don't get confused......really......?

The correct way of locating geo as I decribed still stands on it's merits, that's the easiest way to do it, land in a blue area, use the SRV to track the sites.

This is the point where you ackowledge that you were wrong all along, by the way.

Sorry, I thought I had by admitting that's how it now is, if you require an explicit acknowledgement here it is, I was indeed wrong. FDEV have changed it without making a proper announcement as they should have in the release notes or some patch notes but they didn't so I was wrong.

Personally I think that was a silly move and people should have learned how to use it correctly, but that's just me.

A little less certainty from both of you would be more helpful right now :)

It's clearly not displaying a heatmap, because there is no colour graduation. But whether it should be or not (regardless of what official sources have said) and whether it will continue to work the way it is right now is far from certain.

A Heatmap makes sense in this circumstance, it's reasonable for Varonica to assume it should work the say s/he describes even if the graduation is only shades of blue.

However the way it actually looks in-game is as Queex describes, the different shades appear to be based on the terrain (which may be linked to bio-density regardless).

No biggie. I know I got confused as hell just trying to find out how it worked from first principles and the Codex entry was so brief it was no help at all. All the google searches I found kept referencing the green of the old heatmap and nothing I was looking at in-game seemed to make sense. Par for the course for ED that you have to figure things out by inference and trial and error instead of there being documentation.

Agreed we both got a bit heated in disagreement, I just can't believe they changed it!

All I know is that the "heat" map and the so-called "filters", as they currently stand, are not helping me to find Geological Sites on planetary surfaces.....yet weirdly do seem to work mostly as intended when looking for biological sites. Those I am finding with relative ease. Often, when on the the various Geological "filters" (another seemingly meaningless word since the end of Alpha) what looks like a darker shade of the overlay, just ends up being the terrain beneath the overlay.....and I end up fruitlessly searching for the geological sites in my ship and/or SRV, to no avail. 3 days of looking, and I am yet to find a single Geological Site.

I can't say how INFURIATING it is that the Devs took it upon themselves to so radically alter the DSS mechanic we had in the alpha, based solely on the complaints of a few alpha players (funny how I never noticed those complaints in any of the Alpha Feedback threads).....especially given the fact that even they acknowledged that the planetary tech wasn't finished yet. Wouldn't it have made more sense to release the version we got in alpha, combined with the finished planetary tech, and then wait to see if the broader player-base were still confused? Even then, wouldn't it then make more sense to offer up a colour code and/or provide us with a DSS tutorial to help alleviate said confusion, rather than dumbing down the mechanic in a way that actually just makes it WORSE?!?! Though I really don't understand what is confusing about Blue/Green=very low concentrations of Geological/Biological and Orange/Red=very high concentrations of Geological/Biological. Don't need to be a Rocket Scientist to understand that. Yet this tiny shades of blue nonsense is pointless IMHO.

There are not any geological or biological sites as such. Instead there are whole regions of relatively high density and regions of low/zero density. The stuff is just everywhere, and I've had no trouble finding cobble, or the three crystal formations. The trouble I have had is that I always get the "first" (in EDDiscovery's display) planetary material regardless of what I shoot. That is, surface materials are broken.

It is binary according to FDevs own answer and what you quoted. This is not a heatmap. It is only an indication of where it is possible to find or impossible. A heatmap would change color where it is more or less likely. This does not.

Its astonishing. Went from a great idea to worthless. If the geology or bio is abundant you’ll run into it, if not, well good luck.

Which is my biggest complaint btw. A giant blue blob doesn't really help me find these things, as I have proven on multiple planets now. A colour gradient-from blue to red-made far, far more sense....but was seemingly abandoned based on alleged complaints about "confusion".

Seriously, I don't know if its a bug or not, but the blue markings have not been any true indicator of whether or not that area contained a Geological Site.

There are no sites as such. Stop looking for them. Instead, you will find objects (fumarols, vents, bacteria patches...) that may be dense (trip over them every couple of meters) or sparse (only one to the horizon), or anywhere in between.

And finding bacteria patches... ugh (but I do it anyway).

I am aware of that, and I am looking for the objects, and still not finding them. Not even getting anything on my Wave Scanner to tell me I am getting Warmer. Yet Biological Objects I am finding relatively easy.

I have had some consistent success finding geo sites (in alpha and live) from 'likely looking' terrain. If you see a cone shaped hill or odd structure, there's a good chance that's got some geo activity around it. I've had more success with this approach than bio, which is just scattered around (within areas marked blue by the DSS) but usually common enough to find by eye. I'm not a mats farmer but I'm happy enough with the new system as it is, not too easy, not too hard once you start spotting patterns. I agree the heatmap could be more useful without making it too easy.

Earlier today I found some icy water fumeroles where all mats were carbon except Crystalline clusters which gave sulphur. Not great for a player wanting to refuel their SRV (although ring mining still produces lots of different mats) but there is some variety.

I've been struggling most with Bacteria too.

I think there seems to be a disconnect with Elite Frontier management and the community, "oh that's confused some people lets change it" thinking its better, but that goes into knowing this is pretty much an extended beta test...

I have only found one bio so far, on a planet claiming it had two. I can safely say overflying areas which were still blue contained nothing at all for quite a few km's...

Geo's should be be something we can enter into the codex?
