Big boys just play the game, and don't feel the need to get all the latest gadgets jest because they are there and other people have them. They are not essential for funtimes.
If you'd have been going on the expedition last year - before the toys came out - you'd had participated in the expedition and had fun, without having engineer/guardian tech. What's changed?
Why is 10LY extra jump range essential to participation anyway? If it because you hate jumping and want to reduce it by 30%, then maybe the expedition isn't really the thing for you anyway?
Not that the Engineer unlock and G5 FSD are much of a chore. an evening or two of play perhaps, when mixed with other activities?
It's just so I can get it out to Beagle Point. I go exploring in my Vulture most of the time I'm playing the game, so that's the main reason I want to take it along for this, even though there are better suited ships, of course.
All my ships have G5 FSDs already, but to get my Vulture up to the needed distance, I have to max it out. So while I'm out getting the stuff for it, I decided I might as well get enough for all my ships.
The situation seems kind of funny to me, in a way, doing this to myself. I'll more than likely get back at it soon enough, though the prospects aren't very appealing.
...
Oh, as for hanging with the big boys, I'm not sure how people can fully upgrade their ships with the Engineers for things like the PVP meta and so on. Not sure I'd ever get there, even if I wanted to.
