Which in-game species have you seen IRL?

The little collage of pictures I made above from the Eurasian Animal Pack species inspired me to go back through my picture folders and make up one for each of the DLC. The first ten DLC:

I have also decided to do the same picture collages for the base game, deluxe edition and free update animals - rather than cram them all in together, I have divided up the habitat species taxonomically and given the exhibit animals their own collage:

Okay, yeah, Tampa definitely has yellow-footed. One of the only three (iirc?) zoos in the US to have them. They're pretty distinct thanks to their yellowish limbs and tail, which also has stripes. I just got to see them there a few months ago and they were the highlight of the zoo for me.

I'm too lazy to do a full updated Tier Chart, but
1702417150289.png

Other Hightlight Categories include:

Seen the Poop of in the Wild:
Cougar

Missed cos I was on the Wrong Side of the Car:
Striped Skunk

Was looking out for but never saw:
Asian Black Bear
Brown Bear
Siamang
Asian Short-clawed Otter

And updated. As always, I'm only concerned so far as the species level, not the sometimes-arbitrary subspecies Frontier went with.

Patch notes:
  • Beaver moved from "seen in the wild" to "seen in the wild and zoos" - my only pick-up since Oceania. That left just the armadillo as wild-only, so I consolidated those tiers so as to not have a tier with a single species.
  • I realized recently that the place I was counting as having been my reindeer sighting (a Christmas-themed place literally called Santa's Land that I visited some 20 years ago) has, as far as I can tell, only ever kept fallow deer making them a deceitful sham. I distinctly remember seeing the deer there too, so I felt confident in including them. Oh well.
  • Included my hopefuls for my 2024 trips around Texas and Florida, as well as my much more up-in-the-air 2025 Japan trip
  • Swan, sloth bear, and takin are seen; wolverine, wisent, and saiga are not; wild boar is presently not seen but should be in Japan; peccary I have fuzzy memories of that I need to sort out whether or not I'd "count" - erring towards "no" at the moment.

Graphic updated:

Some wildlife sighting I saw a closely related species enough for me to count it:
  • African crested porcupine - I've seen the Indian crested porcupine
  • Alpine ibex - I saw nubian ibex tonnes of times (and got to see an actual alpine ibex once in Italy)
  • Wild water buffalo - obviously I just pretend it's the water buffalo

I know most people already said their new status but I wish they'd also update their graphic. It's nice seeing it progress.

Here's mine:

My main takeaway is that I really need to visit some cold climate zoo. So to the europeans here, which zoo would be best for the bottom two categories?

There are Wisents, Przewalski Horses and Cranes in Parco Natura Viva in Verona, Italy. A smaller (roster-wise), but pretty spacious zoo that I can't reccomend enough.

I've seen Wolverines is Budapest zoo and Zoo Szeged, both in Hungary. Gemsboks I've seen in Beekse Bergen Safari park in Netherlands.

I've seen a lot of people missing Arctic Wolves on their list, I've had misfortune of seeing them in a Belgrade zoo.

They like to "collect" as many white animals as possible, that's their selling point, because Belgrade is "White City" in translation. I say misfortune because that's easily the worst zoo I've ever been to without competition, so seeing conditions in which those animals live wasn't worth it checking the Wolf of my list.

Thankfully I've heard that they plan to move zoo to much greener and more spacious environment as well as restructure the roster and species list they keep

And I think I saw Badgers in a bunch of different zoos across the continent so there's that.
