A few notes:
  • No exhibit animals because I don't want to
  • I am viewing animals at the species level
  • There were a couple of inaccuracies in my last list where I said I had seen some animals I hadn't at the time like the Arctic Fox, Addax, Malayan Tapir although I have now actually seen the Tapir
This has been a lot of fun to do and I will probably continue to update this list after support ends, might be a fun idea to post an updated list on the anniversary each year

With this likely being the last DLC here's my complete list. Note that this is on a subspecies/breed level: I've seen chickens and lions plenty of times, just not Sussex or West African ones specifically. I've been to one zoo each with markhor and wild boar, but they were no-shows at both.

Yea, I have never actually seen a raccoon in person, only really small zoos here have them and none of them happen to be nearby. At least I got every single animal in the new pack!

I'm going to be prioritising getting to Taronga first mainly because I want to try and see JR, the last long-beaked echidna outside New Guinea, before he passes (he's nearly 60 years old now).

A ton has changed in my list! Both because of the addition of the new DLC as well as my trips to zoos I had the pleasure to do in between DLC’s (A very long in between I must say). As per usual, recommended read if you want some context for some of the rankings:

For this whole breed situation, I decided to just ignore them and go on a species level, but I want to clarify what I've seen and haven't. It's been probably the easiest 7/7 of any pack out there, I can see most species in my drive from class to home lmao.
  • The only "fully seen" breed in the pack is the Highland cattle, seen in Sendaviva several times. I've also seen alpacas in a bunch of different parks (Asson, Labenne, Parc Animalier des Pyrenees,...). I guess we can't really categorize the donkey as any specific breed, "American standard" being more of a generic name for the American donkey population, so I guess I've also seen them. I've seen donkeys many many times out of zoos and on many other occasions at zoos, I'd say it's probably alongside the goat the most common "regular" domestic animal at zoos.
  • The rest of breeds I haven't really seen but like, I've seen many other breeds of the same species.
    • With chickens, I've seen a lot of variety, both outside of zoos and in them. My main highlight on this aspect goes Zoo de Santillana del Mar, which houses up to 21 different chicken breeds in small chicken coops in their little farm area.
    • When it comes to goats I've seen a ton of generic non-breed specific goats (which the alpine goat looks great for) outside of zoos, but when it comes to zoos the African pygmy is definitely the most common representative. Outside of the African pygmy goat I've seen Valais black-necked goats, Celtiberian goats, Angora goats,...
    • The most common pig breed I've seen at zoos has to be the Vietnamese potbelly, but I've also had the chance to see basque pigs, kunekune pigs as well as generic no-breed specific pigs. Can't recall to have seen any other pig breed at zoos.
    • I see sheeps every single day of my life (The latxa breed to be specific) and have had the chance of seeing several different breeds in their own regions (Navarra, Churra, Merino,...). When it comes to zoos I've seen Ouessant sheep, Cameroon sheep, Somali sheep, Jacob sheep,...

  • The new Zookeeper’s Animal Pack was a 7/7 for me! And this would have not been possible if not for an amazing trip I took to the Berlin zoos back at the end of September. I’ll give more detail about both Berlin parks later in this post, but I saw the Pallas’ cat, Markhor, Spectacled bear and Coquerel’s sifaka for the first (and only) time in Tierpark Berlin. I have seen the other species coming with this pack in several other zoos, I’ve only seen Hamadryas baboons twice (one of those being at the Berlin zoo), I’ve been lucky enough to work as a zookeeper with Kirk’s dik-dik and have seen them in a bunch of parks (Bioparc Valencia, the Berlin zoo, Faunia Madrid,...) and I’ve seen African spurred tortoises in many other parks, I’d say is one of the tortoise species I’ve seen the most (Cabárceno, Sigean, Santillana,...). The African leopard was my only miss, and different from the Amur leopard that can be found in several European collections I doubt I’ll ever see one unless I go down to Africa to see them in the wild, hence I’ll be using it in the tier-list as the “stand in” for the rest of leopard subspecies I have seen (Sri Lankan, Persian and Javan to be precise), similar to what I do with the lion, Bengal tiger, Himalayan brown bear,... God knows what the “African leopards” that European zoos claim to have are ahahaha.
  • I visited Zoo du Bassin d’Arcachon in June and saw two species I hadn’t seen before, the Malayan tapir and the Sun bear! I was thrilled to see the tapir, I had been to two zoos before that housed them (ZSL London Zoo back in 2018, when they still had them, and ZooParc de Beauval) but they were no-shows in both. I broke my unlucky streak with the lovely male in this French zoo.
  • After I learned that a zoo very close to where I live started housing Amur tigers (Sendaviva), I knew I had to visit and see them for the first time, so I decided to visit them back at the start of July. Three Spanish zoos have received Amur tigers this year, a far cry from what used to be the tendency of this subspecies in the country’s zoos.
  • After many years of dreaming of getting to a zoo I’ve always wanted to visit, this September I finally visited Tierpark Berlin. Easily the best zoo I’ve ever visited, I loved every second of it. The atmosphere, the forested feeling, the statues scattered around the park, the contrast between old exhibits that still hold up and the brand new perfectly designed masterplan projects,... put all that together to an incredible collection full of fascinating birds and ungulates and you have my perfect park! I saw 130ish species I had never seen before, including the some animals coming with this new DLC. Other than them, I saw Polar bears, Sulawesi babirusas and Sichuan takins, joining the rank of species I’ve seen at zoos. In a park full of highlights (my first ever gerenuks, Rocky Mountain goats, reedbucks,...) all three of these species were also very high up. The babirusa and takin are in my top 5 of favorite animals, and finally being able to see them was truly an experience (I had seen Mishmi takins back in 2016, but the Tierpark knows how to display it’s takins!). Polar bears are truly breathtaking animals, it was incredible to finally see one.
  • And right after the Tierpark, the Berlin Zoo followed! Another incredible institution, although I didn’t like it as much as the Tierpark. Some of the exhibits haven’t aged as well and I liked the tierpark's atmosphere more overall, but I don’t want to erase the amazing things the zoo also does very well. My favorite areas were the old Antelope house, the incredibly modern and beautifully designed Rhino Pagoda as well as “Welt der Vögel”, a paradise for any bird lover. The biggest zoological collection in all of the world gave way to a ton of brand new species I had never seen, but the list of the species that are also in PZ consists of the Japanese macaque, Bonobo, Sand cat, Sloth bear, and North Island brown kiwi. The kiwi and sloth bear were especially exciting for me, recently I’ve been obsessed with New Zealand fauna and I had to check in the kiwi exhibit on seven separate occasions to have a chance to look at the animal! The sloth bear was really cool because not only is it my favorite bear species, but it was also the last bear I needed to see to have witnessed all 8 extant bear species! I also saw Gharials for the first time at the Aquarium next door, it can be considered part of the main zoo except for needing to get a separate ticket to access this beautiful building filled to the brim with incredible species of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.

Sorry for the quality of the image, the site won't let me upload the actual downloaded file because it's too big. Seems like this will be the last DLC update, which is a bit sad. I really liked updating my little tier list after every DLC drop, getting to add what I have seen from my zoo trips as well as whatever new was added to Planet Zoo. I’m 99% sure that this will be the last update PZ will get, but maybe I’ll keep up updating the list if I get to see the many animals I have yet to see in my zoo trips, I really enjoy doing so. A pleasure to have chatted with you people about our lists, I loved doing so <3

As always, I'm going by species, not subspecies, unless I have seen multiple in-game subspecies (in saying this I realize that I have both the pig and the boar separately so I can't exactly make myself be totally consistent but whatever, I love and hate taxonomy so much).

The only real change to my list since last time, aside from the newest pack, is that I've decided to bump the wild ass up to "seen". A particularly shoddy zoo I visited earlier this year has a pair of donkey-things that they claim are Nubian wild ass, and while I'm dubious of this claim I also think they were probably not pure domestic donkey, either. They've probably got some wild ass blood in them (what a sentence!). Is that enough to clear the "seen" bar? Ehhhhhhh. Sure. African wild ass is a species I'm sure I'll come across sooner or later anyway, but going ahead and listing these as such (as in, simply Equus asinus) on my life list sits a bit better with me than going "but they weren't ally donkeys, but maaaybe they were, but...", and it means that they check the box at the species level.

Of the species I haven't seen, I believe a handful aren't found in publicly accessible US collections: European badger, Proboscis monkey, wisent, wild water buffalo, saiga, Alpine ibex, Chinese pangolin, and quokka. (I say "publicly accessible" because just last week I found out that there's one private facility that has European badgers). That said, I'm hoping to visit Japan within a few years, which would actually cover the Proboscis monkey, pangolin, and quokka given the zoos I intend to visit. I've been to zoos that kept collared peccary, Dall sheep, and Cape buffalo at the time of my visit, but don't have concrete enough memories of seeing them to count them. I've been to zoos that keep Coquerel's sifaka and maned wolf, but they have perpetually been no-shows. I anticipate that, coincidentally, these are likely to be the next two species to get bumped up on my list, probably the maned wolf first, but who knows what the future holds.

So I've been to a couple of european zoos last week and finally got to see some cold weather animals (Prague zoo is amazing btw, definitely in my top 3), so here's an update:

I also split the invertebrates in the "seen in the wild caegory", because I realised I have no way to verify the exact species I have seen, so I might have seen a closely related species that looks similar to the one in the game (although I'm like 99.99% sure on the dung beetle and most of the butterflies).

Asian water monitor has been seen. They’re way bigger than I was expecting, even knowing they’re the second biggest monitor.

Even so, my prediction that maned wolf would be the next one to get bumped up almost potentially came to pass today instead. I was debating between going to Greensboro and Knoxville, and my wife seemed more into Knoxville. Depending on how long it takes to finally make it to Greensboro, though, maned wolf may also get beaten out by black wildebeest of all things since I do have a vague plan to see them early next year.
