Why can't I play

Hello, a few hours ago I bought a steam key for the Elite Dangerous: Commander Deluxe Edition from a third party seller, I activated the key on steam and it worked like a charm, it downloaded the game and DLC's. But when I launch the game without new horizon, just the base game, and login and link my steam account with my frontier account, the launcher only shows me "Play Demo" (see first screenshot Capture2.PNG), which is kinda frustrating. To be sure, I rechecked on steam and the key wasn't a scam since steam tells I can't buy elite dangerous again on the store because "you already own everything in this package"(see second screenshotCapture1.PNG). Finally if I try to launch the game with New Horizon, the laucher tells me I need to update my game (see third screenshotCapture3.PNG) but steam doesn't see an update on its end. Please help me

Have you tried rebooting Steam as it suggests?

I have no idea otherwise but someone with knowledge of Steam will be along soon Im sure, theyre good like that here.

I am in exactly the same boat
Ticket raised yesterday but no response yet.
Not a great start i have to say. Buy the game but it takes days before you are able to play it. Maybe

Well if you bought it from a third-party then maybe you cannot really blame Frontier for any issues?

Saying that, there can be issues validating Steam purchases - that is why there are dedicated FAQ instructions for those issues. I have several accounts, including two Steam-bought ones and only ever had issues validating the latest Steam "no-CD-Key" version.

I am in exactly the same situation bought it from Instandgaming today downloaded it opend it said Play demo opened an ticket maybe they are gonna help me but its gonna take min a day or 2 ..... not really a fun start when paying money for something.

Please do report your solutions when you've gotten them. You can potentially help others get thru this problem. You know what they say- you're not the first and you won't be the last...

I hope you get prompt help. This is a fun game.

Well, you sure as hell can. It's their DRM and Steam activated the game in the library properly. It's another quality landmark this studio is known and loved for. The only thing OP cannot do is refund, because they bought the key off-steam on some sale. Luckily for FDev, I guess.

Using a 3rd party such as steam is the opposite of the method I used - I looked at the Steam offering and then wondered why I needed to go thru Steam when Frontier had the same offering at their website - so I d/l the game from Frontier instead ( why use a 3rd party when the creator has the site also) - Actually Steam bounces you to that original site for downloading and actual play - You log into Steam then you're directed thru Steam to the creator site anyway, extra bandwidth is being used bouncing thru Steam -

You missed the vital bit of info from the OP: "... bought a steam key for the Elite Dangerous: Commander Deluxe Edition from a third party seller, ..." (my emphasis).

The point I was making was that if you buy from one of the cut-price code sellers (like Humblebundle) then your beef really is with them giving out codes which don't pass the Frontier "is this a legit copy" test. It matters not that Steam lets you install the game with that code if the code isn't working to "validate" the game with your Frontier Account (which is the issue most often encountered in this purchase method).

As I said, F D support will validate the code and sort people out. It happened before that a batch of Humblebundle codes gave the issue, F D support sorted it no problem.

As I said above - using third-party discount codes can cause issues. It is a chance you take when buying from the "bargain barrel". Hopefully support will sort you out.

It really doesn't matter, it's fudged on FD's side, not on Steam's side. And no, I didn't miss it. If the third party copy activates on steam, there is only one instance where FD wouldn't be at fault, and this is credit card fraud / chargeback mechanism. But in that case, game would disappear from Steam library too. Also Steam > FDev and I would rather trust Steam on this one. Probably code linking accounts on fdev's side is flaky and prone to errors. That's what you get when you try your own DRM.

Fdev are aware, let's hope they don't make it even worse when they try and fix it next time

Yeah which reminds me of a wave of posts here on the forums sometime ago, from already playing commanders that lost access for a while. Or the move to the new forums, where old accounts suddenly stopped working and you had to login via frontier despite being told that you can use whichever method you want.

Though to give them some slack, Bungie had problems moving people from Battlenet to Steam too, but that was a tad different, and more difficult migration. Just don't blame 3rd party keys for that, because that's not where the problem lies.

I don't envy FDev's support on this one. Anyway hope they'll get that sorted out as quickly as they squash moneymaking bugs ;-)
