Why do people insist on using the incorrect O7 for a salute?

As a civilian I prefer o/ in most situations. Every once in a while there is a clown who insists on reading it from the wrong side and connecting a short period of my Terran home country's history with it. To those I respond with \o.

Other than that, I like when such silly discussions keep up a good spirit of humour and remind us that we can't even agree on much of reality itself, yet somehow need to navigate the presence of so many unbelievers in our breathing space. At least the virtual world is bigger, if you want create a power structure for every stupid symbol someone may want to adopt :D

The entire galaxy uses o7 and agrees on it for use in both formal and informal situations. Tradition's important but the armed forces OP's talking about used two different salutes anyway in different sectors and we've had 1200 years of argument since then about whether Space is really Air Force or Navy, so if anything y'all should be worried about palm out or palm down...

The kind of helmets and equipment we wear now, commanders, don't look much like William II's army either. Nor do we really need "I am unarmed" gestures now we have transparent helmets and universal radio comms! So if you ask me, a good visible wave over head height serves the best possible purpose suited up.

o7

Ave, Imperator!

That's a good example, because there's TWO thousand years between that salute and NATO. And another 1200 years since then between NATO and the Alliance.
