Why do people insist on using the incorrect O7 for a salute?

The proper salute in both the UK and US armed services is performed with the right arm, the portion of the arm between the elbow and shoulder parallel to the ground, elbow to fingertip straight. So while it's not perfect, <Ois a far better representation than O7. I'm starting the trend. Out with with O7, in with <O !!!!
But, why does it matter how people in foreign armies salute? Do they say less-than-o as a greeting too? o7 btw.

My carrier "Less than zero to you commander"

Me: "ain't that the truth"

I don't like to hear it said "oh seven to you, commander". The word "salute" works just fine. Surely 1000 years from now we aren't still use text symbols and saying "lol" out loud on comms.

In the year 2056 after the existing militaries blew up the world it was decided that a new salute was required that didn't have any connections to the old regime. Because most people that the pressed the button were righties we decided to honor lefties by making it a sinister salute. This was also an inclusive gesture to people that insist on using the Devil's hand, redheads and other undesirables. We were making a brand new, tolerant society so barriers had to be breached. :p
"redheads and other undesirables"

Nothing wrong with redheads! 💃

So OP it seems the answer is we don’t insist on using the incorrect salute, rather we don’t agree on what is the correct salute or what direction we are looking at it from.

I have to say, less than three this thread!
... and that is being generous!

I still can't get my head around something in a game, where the developers use the same greeting, can be disputed as wrong!
I mean, I'm pedantic over some things, but a game greeting, not me!

I don't understand this reference and I'd like to

Its a long running Solo vs all the rest thread :ROFLMAO:

O7

More productively (or less, depending on your POV)... although I'm stating the obvious, it doesn't matter does it? : ) or the same with a dash in between are not anatomically correct faces... where's the ears, hair and such?

The point of emojis/ascii art is to convey a concept/meaning in a simple and easily communicable way, not to provide an accurate representation. This is especially true for things which have variance around the world. o7 is, clearly, a salute, and is two keypresses. <O ... looks like a bird... so it's not clear... also needs more keypresses (but the same as O7)

Regardless, I look forward to someone linking the Flag codes next time someone uses a flag emoji on here...
