Why do you play Elite?

Mastery of a complex subject. With about 2.5 months into EliteD, I am far (light years, one might say) from mastering it. But I tend to enjoy getting into the minutiae of things, taking them apart and putting them together.

Sense of self-determination and autonomy. Especially into adulthood, we spend a lot of time living with constraints on our time, location and desires because of our decisions, or because of circumstances thrust upon us. EliteD has constructed a universe where you can make fresh decisions, and even die a few times while getting it right. Or not. :)

A cycle of challenge->reward that is the right balance to keep me coming back.

The sights and sounds from in VR are the cherries on top.

Plus, spaceships!

Science model as presented by the stellar forge?
This. I'm a space geek. :)
I don't think it would be the same if it were some made up galaxy either. Something about it being the Milky Way makes it special.
That being said, I have much anticipation for the upcoming exploration buffs. Really looking forward to getting back to exploring the galaxy.

Role playing spaceman.cant deny nostalgia plays a part but I am stunned by the recreation of the milky way .... And vr to boot, to me it's sublime.

I am also putting some proper time into cqc as well for my arcade PvP pew pew itch.

Because it's probably the closest I'll ever get to space travel.

^ This.

The Universe has always fascinated me, and exploring it, even virtually is a way to fulfill my dream of space travel.

Most fear the unknown or what they don't understand- I don't. I dive right into it and seek knowledge voraciously as I explore the unknown.

When I was younger I always imagined a life in space, I've always loved science and sci-fi always liked space and when I found out about ED my dream came true

No matter how bad the game can seem sometimes( 400million to outfit a ship and the devs want it done in the most painful fashion possible) ED will always have a place in my heart

When I was a kid I wanted to be an astronaut....found out it required me to be good at maths.

Then I played the original elite and found out I could still go to space but didn't need the maths.

Still playing...still bad at maths

Several reasons really

1) My father introduced me to Elite as a young lad - so certainly nostalgia
2) I enjoy sci-Fi so flying about in a space ship with a choice of what I do with it is appealing
3) I like the economic mechanic with different economies, supply and demand etc.
4) Powerplay - the idea behind it is interesting and I'd like to eventually be able to actively participate in it
5) The idea that I can actively affect / have a role in how the game develops - even if partially
6) I want explorers to see my name as the first discoverer on systems they jump to in the black :D

I'd say that nobody really is a complete master of the game. People might know a lot about PvP techniques but might not know how the stellar forge works in certain sectors or how to determine certain stars in a system with their names or how to find profitable routes or how to use the BGS.

Love sci fi, love the ships and most of all not a pay to win micro transactions fest. Well done frontier on all of the above.

I used to be an avid space nut. There are two space simulation (ok 3 sort of) games out there. X and Elite. Elite was the first one I played (way back with the first game) and so it gets a special place.

I play X (well I did), Elite and sometimes No Man's Sky.

While I think the development of Elite is pretty slow, I still like it and I don't feel like I have to run a treadmill to keep up. I can play a few hours and feel like I've done something.

I do like how the ships work as they appear they should. What I mean by that is they seem to be modeled such that thrusters are placed where one might expect for the ship to move the way it does. Sure it's still science fiction and they fudge a bit but that's ok. If I wanted reality I'd still be stuck at earth barely making it to orbit.

Flying the ships, being a space pilot.

Exploring is also fun. For me, exploration has become almost 100% being out on a planet, checkout out various terrain features. I use a Keelback with a Taipan, which I use for moving fast and low, and the SRV for getting detailed on the surface.

There are so many planets to explore within 20LY of where I am in the bubble, that for a good while now I've felt little interest in going any farther.

love it, I get to slap on the VR'majiggidy thing and I'm away into space, exploring, travelling, fighting, I'm a space commander... yeah! Completely oblivious to wife, child, child's friends, double glazing salesman, work emails and the fact the car is leaking oil... again. Bloody brilliant.

Once my commode arrives from FleaBay and I perfect the intravenous delivery of Tunnocks Tea cakes and Yorkshire Tea there's a strong possibility I may never leave.

Nostalgia was the reason to take a look at it. For me the name carried so many images as I imagined them playing the original and got lost in the a galaxy of lines circles and dots. I was curious to see if the creator's envisioning was any close to mine (it proved to be even better). But staying at the game and having 1000+ hours of play has nothing to do with the old games. The new game was better in almost everything than its predecessors. So it was even more addictive. Yes, it's not perfect. I'm not sure what perfect would look like anyway. Some times relaxing, some times exciting. Fun.

Because i was born to late and i was born to early to be an explorer. So simulation will have to do.

I dreamed of an online, open world space game that puts me in charge of my own ship and destiny for most of my life. Its taken a long time but finally the technology has caught up with my fantasies.

Once the world can provide me with a robot girlfriend... my life will be.... complete.

Why do I play Elite? Simply because I enjoy it. That's the be all and end all for me. I find it fun. There is no other game out there like this for me. Believe me I've looked and no other pushes these buttons (Sound like a fan boy now) *gets coat, leaves room*

Science model as presented by the stellar forge? Lore? Nostalgia?

Myself? Ships. The thing that draws me to sci-fi is the ships. I actually ignore sci-fi that doesn't feature ships. Why I struggle with Doctor Who.

I love the ships. They make a universe for me, and it won't surprise you to hear that not only is the Cobra Mk III my favourite ship in the game... But my favourite fantasy vehicle period.

Well, my uncle left me this ship & 100 credits he told me to go my own way, blaze my own path, how could I refuse?

Because I can say "Make it so" and virtually travel light years.

I even call my hyperspace control finger Data, but don't tell anyone.
