"Why do you play Elite?"
Well, I'll just list off my reasons, or at least those that brought me into the game and have kept me here.
1 – space, astronomy, and exploring our galaxy, even within the other facets of the game, playing among the stars, planets, etc.
2 – piloting ships in a compelling sci-fi setting and that it's the main focus of the game. I'm into first-person pilot type sims anyway to a degree, and while this isn't exactly a sim in regard to the "flight" mechanics, the basic controls are there, throttle, pitch, roll, and yaw. I'm not a pilot, but I've had the opportunity to pilot some real-world aircraft and have built and flown hobby model aircraft as well. I'm also really into WW I biplanes and the like. And of course I'm a bit of a sci-fi fantasy buff as well, so the game does a fair bit to scratch the itch, as it were.
3 – I'm new to the series of Elite games, but I like the background lore that has been built up around them, our Commander roles within the Pilots Federation, the different galactic powers and factions of humanity, and our ability to choose our own paths and goals within that framework.
4 – This isn't entirely game related, but I also like the history of Frontier and David Braben, how the Elite games were made for their times, the ways procedural generation is and has been utilized, and the work David Braben has done for education, motivation, and DIY electronics with the Raspberry Pi. This is somewhat relevant to me more specifically since I've worked in electrical engineering and IT related fields and have done a fair bit of messing around with implementing and programming microcontrollers and the like.
