Modes Why do you want me in Open?

Try to remember that many of us bought the game with no desire to use it as a shoot-em-up game but as a space simulation.

Open griefers dont care. Getting their rocks off making others miserable. It makes them feel superior. They NEED someone to bully, and i would wager at this point that players are thin on the ground and the bullies and blowhards are running out of targets...save for each other.

When fdev makes the murderer pay my rebuy (outside of Anarchy anyway) as punishment, i will give open a look. Anything short of this is endorsing griefing.

I only play in Open because it adds risk and a even a little fear for me. I play a lot of tough survival games, and enjoy titles like DayZ and Dark Souls. I grew up playing Ultima Online in the 90's, and that game is still to this day the most hardcore game I've played (until Trammel came out). People were almost encouraged to grief and cause problems for other players...The solution to it not ruining your game was to get better and learn to avoid the mistakes and traps that the griefers would set.
Also, there isn't an AI in existence (yet) that can outsmart you. No matter the difficulty, it is only a matter of time until a skilled player is beating any and all computer opponents close to 100% of the time. The point is that games quickly become boring when there is no real challenge.
Another point, is there is very little actual griefing that occurs here. I have been playing open mode only for 3 months, been to Sol, a few engineers, and some other high traffic areas, and I have never been attacked by a player. There is an event coming up this weekend (if you haven't heard), and the stations nearby aren't even in lockdown. It seems like every one is on their individual quest to make credits and upgrade their ships, and only incidentally run into other CMDRS. I definitely don't feel like the community is toxic or that you have to constantly watch your six while flying around in open mode.
Lastly, this is a simulation game. Show me a real life scenario where there are no bad guys, no competition, or no one willing to bend or break the rules to get ahead quicker, and I will show you someone who is very naive. I want to experience a simulation for a living, breathing, galaxy. For that, you need actual real people.

It's called being a social person.

Not everyone is a social person. It's perfectly natural to be a "loner", and that's far from the same as being "alone" or "anti-social"...those are very different things altogether.

MadDogMurdock makes a very good point, and kinda turns the Open / Solo debate on it's head. Give him a reason that he cares about, a reason that gives him meaning to go join Open... :)

Show me a real life scenario where someone can carjack you live on your dash cam and walk free, with nearly zero penalty.

Normal, well balanced players DO NOT WANT GRIEFERS IN OUR GAME. PERIOD. I dont care that its rare in Open; in Mobius and Solo, it doesnt exist.

Piracy is fine. But Open griefers arent pirates. Theyre just emotionally insecure children who get their rocks off annoying people and i for one wont share a game play experience with them. Clearly, my refusal to play with them has a profound, angerimg effect on them...which itself is very, very telling.

LOL, like clockwork.

Bonus points for irony.

Nice generalisation!

I think you just don't want to up your game.

SPOILER: You don't have to kill. Successful evasion is a win.

The scenario you asked for? Driving down an empty road late at night, and you stop a red light. Someone walks up and carjacks you. They don't have to pay a fine or bounty, and nothing happens to them unless they get caught. Also, what is a "well balanced player"? Someone who plays the same way that you do? I do a little bit of everything I can in the game...does that make me well balanced? If it does, then your statement is definitely false. Also, I don't personally care what mode you want to play in. If you want to wander the entire galaxy by yourself, then by all means go for it. I want a simulation game with multi player interaction, which includes all the positive and negatives that come with it.

Sounds kind of like Chicago?

Maybe DC?

Isn’t this proposed “PP Open mode only” actually Sandro trying address a much bigger problem? Which is to save Open mode and make it relevant.

There’s no threads advocating or game design changes proposed trying to lure, coax or force people into Solo or PG. Solo and PG players seem to be pretty happy with their game modes. Open is the broken mode, where “play the game the way you want” is pretty much impossible, unless you’re willing to accept non-consensual PvP and become some other Commander’s content. Hopefully, FD will eventually fix Open so it is a more enjoyable mode for the PvP crowd. I’m a firm believer in all modes being equal, and equally enjoyable for those who play in their preferred mode.

Or maybe....FDev thinks a consensual PvP system should require you have at least the opportunity to resist the folks fighting against you.

Do you participate in PP? Or just throwing around buzzwords and such?

Is it even possible to 'up your game' enough to 1v4 a wing of griefers in cutters?

Yes, learn how to avoid interdictions and in the few times you can't avoid it, learn how to run :p

EDIT** Alternatively, meet a like minded CMDR or two, and go hunt them down. You could even make anti-piracy/griefing your playstyle, if there was enough of it happening

I'm doubtful that happens very often, if at all. Cutters aren't really a preferred 'ganker/gweefer/non-consensual pvp' ship generally speaking.

Cutter, corvette, anaconda... doesn't matter which ship they settle on, it's the fact that it's 1v4 or sometimes 1v3.
Here's one that happened recently: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/428714-Open-A-very-brief-tale-from-Shinrata
There was another posted here recently, but it looks like it got removed.

Yeah, worked great for orange_apecs....

How often has that happened to him, or anyone else for that matter? The fact that there is an archived thread about it tells me it isn't very often. Yes, you may not win every engagement. That's the whole point...Tell me about the last time you were in actual danger in Elite? Was the planet you're landing on higher gravity than you expected, or did that neutron star just pop out of nowhere? Did that NPC pirate interdict you? Elite isn't very dangerous once you've got the game figured out.
People play the way they want to play. I am an open only player, and my personal opinion is it's too boring to even consider playing in closed lobbies, mainly because there very little risk. If you don't want to play in open, that's your decision, but don't expect everyone to share your opinion.
