You can call any or all of them Janet if you like mate. It doesn't effect what I'll call them.
It's your prerogative to be wrong, pal.

Except the original argument was never if the "Space sim" genre existed, or the merits of its naming semantics.
The OP was asking if ED was a "simulation" or not, since the "simulation" argument is used often to enforce boring game mechanics.
And no, it's not a "Simulation" even if it belongs to the "space sim" genre. It's a game with poorly designed mechanics.

Actually he asked why everybody is calling Elite a space sim and the answer to that is because that's how the genre is called![]()
It's always a justification given for certain less entertaining elements of the game. It isn't a space sim. Have you seen what astronauts do? Elite is NOTHING like reality so can we please just get FDev focussing on making an enjoyable and engaging space game?
That's all I had to say really. Feel free to agree or disagree at your own leisure.

Just a question: If FD came out and plastered 'Space Sim' on the packaging for ED, would you stop playing?
If not, then this entire thread is kind of useless.
Well, that's the reason why people call ED a "space sim".
But if you read the OP:
He's framing the question in the context of the "simulation" moniker often being used to justify boring gameplay mechanics (which does happen).
Feel free to ignore the OP and argue whatever you want. [haha]
There’s no drag. The reverse thrusters fire after a boost to slow a ship down I’m pretty sure.
Are you being deliberately obtuse?
Turn off your fly-by-wire, go FA-off, then drift forever. with FA on your ship is doing stuff automatically - you can even see the thrusters firing to do it...
By all means argue for more fidelity in the flight model where there genuinely is a deficiency. But where there isn't, don't manufacture one out of whole cloth and obvious rubbish.
Actually the physics engine works pretty accurate, they even simulate gravity accurately. In some cases there are additional rules on top of it to allow 'better' gameplay.
Speed limit still exist.
Oh, and you can't orbit any celestial object.
"Real physics" yeah.
Actually you can. Scott Manley did it. Youtube the guy, he has a video of him doing it
No thanks, I unsubscribed his channel.
Can you do it with any other planet/moon? What about orbiting a 1G or more planet?
I gave you the info. If you're not gonna atleast check yourself then what is the point in asking more questions about it. You CAN orbit planets in ED. End of
Check reddit? There's forums on there about it. Check forums in here even, plenty showing you can do it
That's more of a "post hoc" lore-creation. There's absolutely no valid reason for spaceships built in the year 3000 to not have horizontal maneuvering thrusters.
Oh, yeah, I found some videos. You can't orbit with 1G.
I'm not a fan of Elite, It did some good things with mining and exploration in 3.3, but the rest of the updates were underdeveloped. I liked 2.0 though. You don't seem to be a fan of Elite.
Sorry if you got bothered because we can't orbit planets with moderate G, I'm also concerned about this too.Yet here you are bothering people. I'm done. I just gave info on something you claimed can't be done. Cya buddy
I do care about flying, its what I do most of the time in this game, well... the other 50% of the time is lost with the boring supercruise.Who cares anyway?
