Why Does Everyone Use All-Caps For The Asp?

It's not pronounced A-S-P. It's an Asp. Like the Egyptian Asp. The snake.

Most of Elite's ships are named after snakes, but not too many people seem to have made that connection.
Taha, same here man, never understood that either.
It is definitely an Asp, a snake, not an A S P.
But most people don't care about details ;)

Ahhh, yes you're right - I remember the Gecko and the Moray, however I'm pretty sure the Orbit Shuttle and Transporter were not in the Speccy version (my own "first encounter" with Elite)

Actually it is more accurate to say that most "multipurpose" ships are named after snake - ie Adder, Cobra, Asp, Python, Anaconda, etc

Most fighter ships are actually named after birds-of-prey - Eagle, Falcon, Hawk, Kestrel, Osprey, Gyr, Harrier, Lanner, Vulture, etc

Most trade ships are named after land predators - Lion, Mantis, Puma Clipper, Tiger trader, Panther clipper, etc

That seems to be trend from previous Elite games anyways

Indeed, although the 2nd and 3rd groups of ships you mentioned there were also not in the speccy version, and I assume the BBC version.

The birds of prey and predator (mostly cat) names appeared in Frontier: Elite II, not the original Elite (some were from First Encounters but I don't remember which). Some versions of the original game had the Cougar but it wasn't present in the BBC B version (which was the first).

Ah, the wallowing in nostalgia :)

It bothers me a fair bit, but I have learnt to cope with it after raising a similar thread to this myself a while back. Not sure why it should bother me so much, but it does :(

Considering that there are 5 other ships in the game named after snakes it is a bit odd to miss the connection.

Because it is freaking awesome and deserves all caps.

Until you've max throttled one and boosted in full 7.1 Surround sound, you simply have not lived.

All Caps means shouting and it's a shouty beast.

This! Oh yeah! IT'S A FREAKIN' ASP, GOSH-DARN-IT!

I think the problem is not people typing Asp in capitals

It is people not typing everything else in capitals.

I mean, the in game shipyard shows it as capitals, so we should type it in capitals, right?

And... for the folks who are suprised/amazed/etc that people don't make the snake connection. Well until I played Elite I didn't know the Asp snake existed. And talk about connections all you like, unless you go off and research that information (most don't which is fine...) then you would not be expected to know.
