Why does my 34th century spaceship have no autopilot OR how do you accept the hyperjump grind?

Because AP trivializes the size of the galaxy

No, it doesn't. No distance is lost and no time is made up, you just don't need to input the commands yourself. What you're thinking about are warp gates that sling shot you across hundreds or thousands of lightyears, which is useless in a game where nothing is really waiting for you on the other side anyway. A whole different argument.

Why not make it challenging instead of bypassing it?

Well, they haven't made it challenging or interesting yet, so other suggestions follow. We'll see what happens Q4, but I doubt the idea of mindlessly jumping to destination is going to change no matter what we ask for. More interesting engagements during exploration will certainly help the journey though.

Once more, the time spent on the trip tells you whether it's long or short, for example, a 600 Km airplane trip is short yet in car you'll take more than double and since you must drive through it, you'll feel and talk about it as if it was one of the longest trips (yet the distance between the two is literally the same), make enphasis on that drive through it part.

You know what I got an excellent question, is travelling 4 lys a long or a short trip? Why so?

Can someone give me a concise summary of what people want in this thread, as it is getting a little confusing. Is it:

(A) An auto-pilot that will allow a Commander to plot a long course, press a button and the AP takes over, aligned the ship to the destination, engaging SC then jumping, arriving at the next waypoint, scooping fuel if required, maybe honking the ADS, then repeating the jump senquence until you either reach your destination or run out of fuel;

(B) The FSD being modified to all you to perform a single jump to the maximum of your fuel usage;

(C) Instantaneous travel, were you select your destination, press a button and you are transported there via FD's well know use of handwavium;

(D) Jump gates that can instantly transport you to any other jump gate in the galaxy.

4 LY is an unimaginable trip for one that not only hasn't taken the journey but doesn't even have the technology to do so. A 13 hour plane trip in real life is a tough task, though since I didn't actually fly the plane, it was much easier to digest since I could do other things while the plane was being flown by someone else. In either case, I'm trying to play a video game, for entertainment, for fun, and since I know that it's a video game, where loading screen immersion has worn off after several years (actually probably a couple weeks after release), the scale of the empty void isn't entertaining. You can't bring real life into this because we don't really have anything accurate to compare it to, but I imagine when we do, it won't be as simple as turning my joystick and pressing a button a thousand times to get where we're trying to go. Or maybe it will be as simple, maybe the only way we'll be able to explore deep space is in a more automated manner, who really knows, and again, it doesn't matter because it's a video game.

Well, FD are supposed to release a nice combo of activities for exploration on Q4, hopefully that'll make it more challenging.
And I'm certainly interested in seeing that manifest but given their current tight lips about it including whether it will affect the general mechanics of travel we're sort of guessing t best as to whether it will be a solution.

It seems all options have been mentioned but I imagine C and D are likely a very small group, if anyone, while A and B at least try to maintain the scale while automating the monotony of manually jumping for hours on end and is likely more preferable to more people who would like a change.

Well, at this point in time I'm aware it's not possible to change your mind, lucky me, long distance exploration was literally what got me to play the game in the first place so at least I'm aware of what I buy.

Considering the game is more than that, I was aware of what I was buying too. No one here has claimed they got something different than what they paid for. As I've had to say several times today for some reason, I'm happy you enjoy current exploration, more power to you.

Well, since there are three main roles, exploration is a pretty big chunk of the game yet you've shown us how much and why you dislike it.

Thanks, very much appreciated. Since none of those options interest me (I actually don't mind the current system), I will withdraw from this conversation as I really can't contribute.

Cheers

Opinion:
.... a very bad game design decision.

Fact:
I think Frontier has something to do with this as well. It's their design decision. Don't blame those who happen to agree with it.

Exactly Mr. Stardust.

Yet another rubbish thread with the same whinging, the same people ragging on people who don't want to play the game their way, pathetic really.

Memo to no-one in particular:

Learn to fly your ship or go to hell.

Okay, and?

I enjoyed it back in the beginning when there was mystery behind it, when I only had a basic discovery scanner and had to find things the hard way. Over time I earned the ADS and quickly learned how barren and boring the galaxy actually was. I actually like exploring, just not how it currently is in this game. I'm looking forward to Q4 and hoping it'll win me back. However, that has nothing to do with what we are discussing here or at least supposed to be discussing, which is the monotony of manually jumping long distances. We get it, you like it and don't want anything to change. However, the fact that you like it isn't a compelling reason for me to concede that no improvements could be made. By the way, if no change is made, I doubt anyone is going to lose sleep over it, I certainly won't, I've already done my fair share of hypergrinding as it is. It's just one discussion among many on how just one particular aspect could be improved upon.

All people in this thread that are against an AP, should mass together and demand that FD remove the Docking Computer from the game. Unlike jumping between stars, Docking can be a challenge. FD provided an aid for it. A very SKILL BASED thing in the game can be ignored by the use of a DC.

Why aren't you up in arms about that?
This boys and girls is what we call a strawman.
