Why I hate the DBX

Regarding space taxi, I am a hauler fan. I like how it handles in SC and realspace, I like how it sounds, I like the cockpit AND it is really cheap for ship-transfer, which is an important factor for a space taxi. Mine has a jump-range of 41.6 ly with 2D shields (enhanced low power shields) for the acidential landing bump protection, ADS, DSS and a nice 3A Fuel Scoop. I love it.

I only ever tried the DBS from the diamon-back's and I didn't like it from the start.

Never the less, jump range and a bit more use-ability for actual getting something done besides of shuttle service, maybe it has some points for the DBE... maybe, just maybe I gonna give it a chanc some time... but flying within a scaffold, will cost me quite an effort...

Hauler. Less costly than a night in a London bar and does the taxi job so well I previously nominated it for a taxi paintjob.

Doesn't this count?

I feel this way about the AspX. I used one for a while and it's how I made my fortune, but god I hated the sound it made. Felt like I was crop dusting corn fields. And grew to hate it's looks. I have a DBX now as my bubble taxi / Explorer (52ly). Fortunately, I love the look of it. If I could get the range out of my Clipper that I have out of my T6 (42ly w/ G3 DD and 80t of cargo space) or DBX, that would be my bubble runner. That things sounds like a high end sports car.

I'm not a fan of the DBX cockpit, the views are great, but everything just looks cluttered. Even though the DBX has taken me the furtherest (all the way past Beagle point), and allowed me to get to some fairly remote stars; I still find myself prefering the AspX over it.

However, it is still one of my top 3 ships and with the new 3.0 Beta I'm very much looking forward to a fairly serious engineering overhaul of my DBX. With the some of the new engineer changes, it may just end up being my no. 1 ship for a while.

TS definitely should be flying a dolphin, orca or courier. He wants to travel in style. No, they can't beat the raw practicality of a DBX, but they sure are purdy; and their jump range is more than adequate.

Ze diamond-back, zhe eez ze most beautiful ship in ze game!

And I disagree zat her cockpit is like a small garbage truck - eet eez instead like a very LARGE garbage truck, heh heh!

I'll get straight to it:

- The exterior model is derived and strongly reminiscent of a cockroach.
- The interior looks and sounds like the cockpit of a very small garbage truck

Why should this concern anybody including me? I can just pick something else to fly, right?

Well no, that's the problem: there isn't a functionally better bubble taxi / runabout available.

- In spite of how unpleasant it is, there's no way around using it, cause its too good at shrinking the bubble with its ~52-55 LY jump range (I have 6 in identical configurations).

"Ahh!", you say, "its not the only one, you could also use an ASPX or Anaconda..."

Well, you *could*, but the ASP is overly heavy, can't jump quite as far, and the cockpit is also bare metal, now with the sound of a B29...
And the Anaconda, well, its a bit overkill for a taxi, I only use it, when there's a specific reason calling for something large.

Can't FDev makes us a bit more luxurious, stylish explorer for people with a taste for well crafted interiors and somewhat more elegant exteriors? I.E. everything very similar to the DBX in function, just far more stylish looking inside and out and better sounding!

I mean, would you pick a well appointed 2018 BMW as your daily driver or 1970's Chevette with all padding removed?

(P.S. Yes, I know some people will respond and say they like the feel of an ominous sounding tiny Nostromo, but not all people do)

Sounds like you need to upgrade your life and step into a Saud Kruger Dolphin. It's not hard to push one of these well above 45 Ly a jump, more than enough to miniaturize the bubble, it looks good, sounds good, can fly circles around the DBX, and while not much in the way of a combat ship, you'd be surprised what you can pull off with it.

Well, this is the point, isn't it? Whether you like the ship or not is entirely subjective. I love the DBX, and the only reason I don't use it as my bubble hopper is that the fuel scoop irritates me (so I use my AspX).

I like pretty much all the ships, as they each have their foibles. This is a good thing.
You're absolutely welcome to have your sci-fi dream of a bare-metal rust-bucket in space satisfied!
We've all seen the relevant movies...

All I'm saying is, there should also be a bubble hopper for people who don't get excited about the garbage truck feel of Lakon.

Imagine every taxi you can find in your city is a garbage truck that creaks ominously in every turn.
I'd find it great as a one-time weird experience, but day after day, I prefer a posh BMW from Gutamaya with matching jump range.

Short of that -

if FDev would at least let me turn off the DBX's annoying cockpit sounds without also muting all relevant game cue sounds, I could deal with it better.

It's a great ship; the utilitarian looks are a part of it's charm.

Some redeeming features..

- "Cheep" to run/rebuy
- Great jump range esp. when engineered
- Runs Cooooool
- Looks like a cockroach (OP)
- Smells like a garbage truck (OP)

What's not to like?

My only complaint is with FD on this one - it used to be Yellow, but mysteriously changed with a particular update to "Garbage Truck Grey" [blah]. Oh well..

On your advice, I just spent an hour checking out the Dolphin... as in purchased one and fitted it for range...

-- I guess I know why I haven't touched it before - it looks like a Korean design for a commuter bus... eek! Not my posh Gutamaya 335i.
+ tactical graphite paint job hides most of the ugliness.
- Fuel scoop blocked from being installed in the C5 slot - the sucking sound of that can be heard in the vacuum...
+ Nonrestricted slots are ok though, size and number is sufficient. About the same as an Orca, if you disqualify the restricted slots on each.
++ The cockpit looks good and is quiet!
- I could have done without the A-pillar design, that seems to be copied 1:1 from of Z-Hauler or Adder
+ With a spare 46% FSD roll sitting around, I got it up to 44.42 LY Jump range, but that's also with 2A PP and a lame duck 3D distro.
- Its no match for my fleet of 50-to-54+LY DBX Taxis and is only 2 LY over my light weight Python.

So, overall, I'll keep this one as a curiosity, but my wish is mainly to mod the Dolphin cockpit into the DBX.
But much better yet, for FDev to give us a posh and good sounding Gutamaya jump-about.

(no, not the Courier, it has sucky jump range and even more sucky cockpit struts)

"Part of the charm" is not fact, but just your opinion, which others may not share.

The functionality is unrivaled, which makes its use unavoidable.

As for FDev changing color schemes on things we already bought, I resent that... They totally screwed up the Cobra with weird new plastic panels, which completely ruin the Onionhead paint job - as those fugly panels don't take the paint.

I absolutely love the DBX, for exactly the reasons you hate it :)

That said, I would like to see versions of all ships made by all manufacturers. Basically the same ships with slight differences in their stats and different looks.
Like you mentioned DBX type ships from Saud Kruger, Gutamaya, Core Dynamics, DeLacy, Zorgon Petterson - all looking different with sight variations.
And versions of the Cobra, Vulture, Anaconda, Python, Cutter … all looking different and with only slight variations in functionality to make them feel like ships designed by the different manufacturers.
Personally, I'd like to see many different ships. Each manufacturer should have numerous ships that fit the different roles, with similar capabilities, but with some variety.

I'd like to see a large Lakon explorer ship. Something which can compete with an Anaconda (in terms of jump range and module space), but with a decent view from the cockpit.

DBX are cool.

This is the Scanner Darkly.

In fact all the Lakon ships are here to do work.
Work doesn't necessitate modelling it after a cockroach.
Indeed, I detest all Lakon ships' style ...err lack thereof.

And I'm not asking to change them...

I just want an alternative - that at least removes the nasty cockpit sounds. My children are complaining about it. My wife wonders what the weird, , speech chunks are you hear in the background in stations... (some of it is just normal radio chatter, but some ...is positively perverse).
Considering the Zorgon Hauler in addition to the aforementioned, you start wondering if there's some satanists contributing to this game. Or if they're just referencing the movie Event Horizon, which was a movie with satanist background.

And if I wanted a job, I'd get one where I get paid money. Role playing failure, yeah... I'm past that age.

same happens to me vs imperial ships. and while i do troll sometimes, i don't whine around about it :p

i actually like the dbx a lot, since it's just a bigger cockroach than the dbs. the dbs is nicer, though. one of the more appealing ships in the game.

anything else, sir?

My children are complaining about it.

send them off to play outside.

My wife wonders what the weird, , speech chunks are you hear in the background in stations...

have you considered divorce?

or, ... you could show them a bit of consideration and play with a headset.

And if I wanted a job, I'd get one

hey! at least we agree on something!
