Why is engineering still such a grind and clart on??

New engineers system is awesome, love the changes...

But why in the year 3330, or whatever it is, can I not purchase things like raw iron. Its cool that we can drive around on a planet to find things for free, but why cant I just BUY it. Why do I need to kill ships for internals, why cant I just visit a ship yard and buy parts.

It makes zero sense and bores me stupid collecting mats. And no, material traders are not an answer to this as you can not BUY stuff.

*rant mode off*

"Why is engineering still such a pita grind and clart on??"

What's a clart-on?

Hera Tani gives me a clart-on...

I hit the other ship clart-on its powerplant...

"Captain, multiple Clart-ons approaching..."

"I kicked him in the clart-ons...."

"Leeloo," the latest single by Eric Clart-on or,

"The Galactic Tour," a new Galnet Feed series by his brother, Jeremy Clart-on.

Clart: Northern English/Scottish.
Clarty mess: a smeary mess such as would be made with viscous mud/oil.
Clart on: the chore of cleaning said mess.

All stuff needed for engineering is gained by playing the game.

Except for HGE-only mats like Improvised Components and Pharmaceutical Isolators.
The chance of finding them in sufficient quantities without specifically looking for HGE in the appropriate systems is minuscule. And HGE hunting is one of the most boring 'activities' in the history of gaming.

And if shooting rocks for hours on the surface of barren rocks is not your thing, then you're probably never going to see the required amount of G4/5 raw mats either.

I got 30 pharmaceuticals in ten minutes yesterday.

Git gud.

Yeah, it's definitely borked. My advice: Collect EVERYTHING. Use the material traders. Dav's Hope. Remember to bookmark recipes at each engineer. Have fun!

Considering each and every material now has its own dedicated and isolated storage, I have to wonder why anyone would not pick up everything.

The way I do engineering is to pretend it doesn't exist while acknowledging that it exists.

Basically, take it slow - if you chase engineering, you'll hate it. I generally do what I want and need to do, and treat engineering as something to do on an informal basis. There are a few unavoidable grinds, but with the right knowledge they can be minimised.

For instance, Farseer is probably the most useful engineer all-round (The Dweller is a close second, IMO). Apart from the FSD mods, her other stuff is largely basic G1-G3 stuff, but it's transformative - G3 dirtry drive mods are brilliant when you've never experienced them before. Additionally, there are a lot of resources online for finding the materials you need more quickly. inara.cz is very useful for looking up the required mats and gaining a general idea of where to find them. There are even online spreadsheets with similar functions. If you're having trouble finding a particular material, you can always ask!

I think of engineering as background content. If you think of it as mainline content, it will drive you mad.
What if you think engineering was the only thing interesting enough to bother to play again?

I find that if you had a lot of time for material gathering and could stomach waiting and waiting for little beige circles to appear in space, called USS, you could engineer things fairly quickly, after collecting enough crap.

But since engineering 3.0 has MULTIPLIED the material gathering requirements for all but pink-unicorn-hunters from engineering's previous incarnation, it is totally borked for casual players and an incredible logistics workload for people who do have months and months of all-day spare time.

Using Google, the forum and 3rd party tools to find this crap doesn't qualify as a game mechanic either...

FD's stated intent for this is, that a completed rank 5 engineering mod should be something you work towards over a long time!

But of course, that's a ridiculous notion, nobody plays like that. No PvP player will go fighting with half engineered stuff...

I bet you, when people realize what the 3.0 changes really mean for time requirements, FD will find a lot of people who don't play anymore - by way of lacking paint job sales...

I am trying my best to get back into the game having grown up with the original back in the 80's but this engineering carry on is really killing it for me :(

I get that you need to gather mats etc but I am just finding it so mind numbingly boring and tedious that I have already logged off 3 times today and almost uninstalled the game :/
Surely it cant be like this and I am doing something wrong to make it so painful???

You're a bit late to the game. Engineering feedback was months ago.

If you don't like it, don't do it.

All stuff needed for engineering is gained by playing the game. Material is one of the very few strong incentives (much stronger than credits in my opinion) to do the various activities in ED. Take this element away or significantly speed it up would not only trivialize the whole engineering idea but also the game itself. Maybe with the exception of the flat-gamer who don't have anything else than pew pew in mind. If you don't love this part you should probably ask yourself if you love the game at all - or if playing something else would probably better suit you. CQC perhaps? [where is it]

Driving around shooting rocks *should* be trivialised.

Over a thousand hours in and I still don't have all the engineers unlocked. The only way to play this game and not quit in frustration is to embrace the grind and do it piecemeal - don't even try to fully engineer something. Just do as much as you can for now and move on. The grind in this game is stupid (as is the economy) and is a huge opportunity for other space games to do it better... one day... can't do much worse.

And don't forget there are the tech brokers who sell blueprints that seem to allow you to buy pre-engineered stuff.

I tend to plan ahead and roll the visits to the various engineers into my schedule. Now with pinning blueprints, it’s made a whole lot easier.

I'm from the North of England, and live in Scotland.

I'm very familiar with clart-ons. I also use it as an affectionate insult.
