Why not just close open play fdev?

Solo isn't cowardly, some people just enjoy playing this game to chill.
This is also a misconception that gankers just want easy targets. The vast majority of gankers go after difficult targets as well. Myself in particular, I will go after a Vette, Conda or Cutter before I go after the shieldless Adders.

These are both just bullspit stereotypes that each side uses to get at or diminish each other. Neither is true.

There are some exceptions to both. Sometimes players will switch to solo to undercut other players and there are some gankers that only target weak players but this isn't the majority.
100% agreed, I was talking about the exceptions. They are the people who call Solo players cowards while being cowards themselves. I guess the vast majority just enjoys playing the game and doesn't care for all the mode nonsense.
Still, its the exceptions which cause the most problems. If you have an alt account, try visiting a CG system in a PvP capable ship. Then try it again with a stock Type 7.
On the plus side, most of the 'I got blown up for no reason" posts stopped after the introduction of the starter systems...

Well said gentlemen both.

Actually I have been to a CG in a cargo ship, I played the first year of this game in PG and was told that I would just get ganked if I went into open, so I avoided it. One night I just wanted to see what it was like and went to the CG in open, in a poorly engineered anaconda and got blown up in seconds but instead of discouraging me, it made me want to build a combat ship and go back. And now, 3 years later, I'm a pvper.

If you are the kind of person that never wants to get shot at, then why are you playing in open? Open is for people who don't mind getting shot at and if that's not for you, that's absolutely fine, and if someone calls you a coward for playing in solo, screw em. They're just idiots and you can ignore them.

There may be a few exceptions but even the gankers play other games in solo. Just because they play Elite in open doesn't make them tough.
I've actually fought almost every ganker on PC and all the ones that don't do legit PvP are weak anyways. Just ignore them, they aren't worth your time.

I remember picking a fight with another player in a conflict zone a long time ago. Forget the name of the CG, but it was about who got to have a new planetary base, or something.

My G1-G2 Anaconda was no match for whatever that guy had. Wish I remembered his name, so I could thank him for giving me an educational beatdown.

To everyone who roughed me up early in my Elite career, I thank you.

I still think the funniest ED moment ever came in open, in Deciat strangely, where someone I knew had been ganked and blown to bits in his new guy attempt to get to Faseer

Needless to say , we thought it fun to take 4 PvP ships over there in a wing and have some fun.
After ganking the ganker, then proceding to remove his shields, his hull and his life (in that order), he came on the system chat and whined about how using torpedos, reverse and healing beams was against to PvP'ers code of honour....
we laughed and laughed... then shot him again :ROFLMAO:

Bill

Hopefully he learned that that an unarmed DBX may have some bigger nastier friends ;)

Personally I always play in Open, all my ships are engineered and a PvPer needs to be really lucky if he wants to destroy me before I high wake. And even if they would manage to destroy my ship, I have plenty of rebuys.
I just like arguments as much as some people like explosions.

My first ever CG was the original Hutton mug making one. I went there in my sidewinder with 4 tonnes of scrap like the world's dumbest noob! I don't think I'd have known what happened if I was interdicted lol!

Yup the terminology used is often misleading. Ganking can be legit, PvP can be legit, griefers and murderhobo's are not legit :) But not all PvP killings are griefing done by a murderhobo (although some get close (too close?) to the line).

It is sad, that player interaction can be avoided. Otherwise people would build up much stronger associations. Also "creating ressources", "supply chains" etc. would be more interesting. If a human can avoid problems, there is no need for him to to solve problems, may together with others.

Interaction with others is the only way to create (very) long-term content. E: D pass this opportunity.

When the only interaction is one person being killed without the possibility of returning the favour, then is it any surprise that said interaction is avoided?

Yes, it can be. Choosing not to instance with the psycho is also legitimate gameplay, but it has the side-effect of causing Open-only salt threads like this one.
To be fair, I don't think most of the open only threads are due to there not being enough people in open. I think it mostly has to do with not being able to face enemy players when it come to BGS and powerplay, which I can understand. The main reason I don't do BGS is because the part that I enjoy is fighting with the players I'm BGSing against (which I know is pointless anyways) and most of the time they switch to solo, which is fine but it bums me out.

I thought it was a "close open play" thread?
