Why Not Play Another Game?

SC collected over 190million. NMS sold millions of copies with support from Sony. ED is well over two million.

It has nothing to do with niche. These type of games are simply far more difficult, with constant new hurdles to take. Its simply a far riskier proposal than, say, another assassins creed, far cry, call of duty, fifa etc. Just fyi: Mass Effect: Andromeda was supposed to have procgen landable planets. They gave up, after years, and the project never fully recovered.

What FD did is very impressive, and taking it for granted is a road to unhappiness.

just like this comment ?

The game seems to be in maintenance mode.

The upshot of the 10 year plan (read, shoestring funding) is the kind of frustrations we read here.

LOL FD cannot win!

Go back a yeah and this place was full of "I want space legs", but perhaps equal in voice was the "FD need to fix the core mechanics before adding new features". If shoestring funding was an issue, do you not think 3.0 would have some paid for content? Excuse me off to hammer that square peg.

The issue for me is that they've done neither. The core mechanics are the same as they were on release. The changes to map, engineers, c&p and all that other stuff didn't change the fact that there is nothing new to do - damaged station evacuations are just more docking and undocking, damaged station repairs are more docking and undocking, passenger missions = docking and undocking, the wing missions are the same but with more people, combat missions are still go here and kill lots of this. A lot of it is still bugged. New bugs were added. But there is nothing fundamentally new to do in the game with the exception of thargoid combat. Kinda.

In my opinion, the reason there's no paid for content is it will help mitigate some of the flack they will get for more lacklustre development, exactly as you have done above. It's not much of an excuse: 'this is basic and sucks but hey it's free' but it's better than trying to charge for rubbish, they got burned by that last time. Personally, I think the fact that ED has served its purpose for FD and now they are focussing on other projects and nevermind all the nice stuff they said they would do is pretty obvious. Glaringly so.

I've withdrawn all my support but still feel like a mug for feeling like I've been part of a 'project' all these years.

Btw. Anyone who gets inspired to try out X3 but can't get throttle to work (with hotas) untick "use throttle" in the launcher. Weird but works.
Got it installed but haven't had time for it. Played some earlier version a long time ago and can attest to its epicness.

Eve Online would be more fun if it wasn't more about pewpewpew than anything, and then there's the lack of first person flight perspective, which takes away from it for me. Also, it's F2P, which is just begging for trouble.

I play Star Trek Online sometimes, but the ships are small, the mechanics boil down to "shoot this," and "scan that" which get very boring before long, and it too is F2P, though I think they do a nice job balancing it out.

Mass Effect has some incredible visuals, but it's about shooting stuff, and I'm more fascinated by the beautiful universe in which it is set. Seriously, the art department for that game needs high praise, but unless I want some cinematics and pewpewpew, I've got nothing to do.

Stellaris has some nice strategy/gameplay, but it's made in the same vein as so many other modern space games that eschew a first person, visceral experience. It sits along with the other modern space games that favor voxels and sprites, which is fine if you're into voxels and pixel, but none of it scratches the Elite itch one iota.

Star Conflict is another F2P set in a first person universe, and while it looks good, there's no time to appreciate it because of pewpewpew and "buy more credits."

Endless Space 2 looks incredible, and has gameplay and story out the wazoo, but it's not a first person immersive experience like Elite.

Eve: Valkyrie looks jaw droppingly fantastic, has first person perspective and everything, but it's just combat.
The X-Series of games... X-Rebirth has had a mixed reception, but X2 and the X3 games are still very playable even if their graphics can look dated. Plus there are a healthy range of mods for those games.

There are others too if you care to delve through the Steam library.

People dont need to give you an excuse when giving a gift. I havent seen 'sense of entitlement' being demonstrated so effectively with so few words...

How about an excuse for not delivering what they said they would?

I bought into the game, supported it with micro transactions and defended it from criticism here and elsewhere on the basis that it would be developed into something better than it currently was. And not out of any wishful thinking but because we were told it would be. In my opinion this has been reneged upon massively and ‘but it’s free’ is a smokescreen. I do feel entitled. Entitled to a game closer to what we have been told ED would become.

They can keep their ‘gift’. I want the product I thought I was contributing to the development of or at the very least a clear admission that this is as good as it will get.

I also think that your comment comes close to commenting on me personally rather than my post, I’d appreciate it if you watched your wording in the future.

Why Not Play Another Game?

I do play other games. Ark. Fortnite. Rarely GTA and Paladins. Maybe other games as they come out. But for the moment, ED is my main game. It might not remain that way, maybe it will. In terms of space games, harder to say. Some nice looking space games in the works, Dual Universe looks interesting, but no replacement for ED.

But there again, i enjoy ED. I do not understand those who claim to not like ED but keep playing.... but hey, masocists abound.

"SUBNAUTICA" FTW! [yesnod]

I believe the game is still on sale on Steam at the moment and update #85 just came out last week. The game is an interesting blend of survival/adventure/sci-fi/space genres with a decent storyline, contained within a wide open sandbox set on a Waterworld where submarine exploration and crafting are the dominant themes.

You arrive at this alien world when your gigantic and recently commissioned capital space ship is inexplicably pulled out of the sky by an unknown force and crash lands. Leaving you cast adrift on this endless sea full of complex alien life. All the while in search of answers as to who or what is controlling this strange alien planet. And why they brought you here.

And easy 100 hours+ worth of quality gameplay, with no defined ending. Similar in that respect to Elite Dangerous and No Man's Sky's open design.

Some of the most terrifying creatures I have ever dealt with in a game can be found within the depths of Subnautica.

Makes Thargoids look like puppy dogs by comparison.

This is the game I currently turn to when I find myself bored with ED, but want to stay with something offering a similar Sci-Fi/Technology focus to the gameplay.

Highly recommend! [up]

Subnautica's a great game especially in hardcore to make the predators properly deadly it also adds a touch of desperation to oxygen reserves as well.

Good for hours and hours of fun, but the couple of square miles gets a bit small once you've seen it all and finished the story. I'll be buying the arctic expansion that's apparently in the works and would recommend it, but it's not really in ED's class.

Could say the same for Elite, once I've seen one mission I've seen them all. Elite has a long way to go before filling that puddle with some more water.

It has its limits like any game, but for the low price of admission even at normal price, it is hard to find any significant downside to owning it.

Personally, I can't think of a better alternate to ED than Subnautica since it offers a different feel while still maintaining a lot of the sci-fi/technology and crafting angles you find in ED and other more space focused games.

I wasn't aware of a new expansion being in the works! :O That sounds interesting! :)

With a sale price of I believe $15.00 USD on sale, you really can't go wrong. Just a couple more bucks than an ED Shipkit!

In addition to Subnautica... No Man's Sky is also improving steadily over time and if this NEXT update is as big a deal as it appears to be, that could bring NMS back up to the top as another great ED companion game. I've got close to 1500 hours invested in my PC version of NMS. Nearly on par with my ED game time investment.

You could make the argument that you reach that "Been there, Done That" point in Elite Dangerous faster than either Subnautica or No Man's Sky.

(Referring to the latest versions of all three games)

Although a lot of players don't realize this fact immediately. Vets who reset and start the game over from scratch often comment on how quickly this happens.
