Why would someone limit who can dock on their carrier?

I don't own a carrier but I bump into them on occasion while out exploring. A lot of them won't let me dock with them. What benefits would someone get from not allowing strangers from docking and refuelling?

I don't want any filthy gutter snipes on my FC, it effects the resale value.

More seriously now, my previous answer was slightly flippant, the only thing I ever wanted from a carrier was to store my ships while traveling, and repair/refuel. All this market, shipyard and etc malarky, specially the market you are forced to have and pay for, is entirely surplus to my requirements and will never be installed or used if possible, and disabled when not required.

If ED let me to define separate market, equipment and restock prices/limits for public, friends, and private, I'd let anyone dock.

Simultaneous purchase and sale orders would be nice too .. even if all you could do was set the buy price / tons and the market automatically set up the sell, off the carrier's global % surcharge. It's fine if you're the one transfering commodities in from left panel but at present it does mean you're the one that HAS to be doing that. It's a relatively minor grip really though for me, playing in the menu's IS playing the carrier game after. Maybe space for a couple of shortcuts on highly repetitive tasks though.

Well, I didn't have any restrictions as to who could dock at my beautiful Ares, parked between Zeta Horologii and Baal, but I never even noticed if some commanders were using it for whatever services it provided at the time.
I had it for a couple of months if memory serves me right, before I sold it back for 4.7 bi or close by.
All those hours offsetting the maintenance cost before having fun every single week, were such a chore that I felt like I was getting burned out of the game.
It would be cool if FC's could generate some income, random as it may be but still.

I generated about 1.6 billion of 'income' in the last 2 days using my FC, if that helps 🤷‍♂️
(That takes care of the 11 million a week for a while)

If I'm having a wildly illegal party on one of my FCs then I don't want any undesirables on my FC stealing my shoot, Puking in my loos, peeing in the corner and scribbling graffiti on my bulkheads...

I earn 300M/hr. One hour is enough to offset 5 months of carrier maintenance. If you have to spend HOURS each week to offset the cost, then you shouldn't own a carrier. Instead, you should learn how to efficiently earn credits in ED before owning a carrier.

Hang on! Free kola cubes or pineapple chunks....jeez!@ back in my day we got flogged soon as we woke flogged all day whilst cleaning the fc decks with a toothbrush, and then once a year we would chew on tree bark and angle grinding swarf.
As our gums bled we would be flogged back to our outhouse.
And that was a good day.@#!

The truth is I have 20 bi credits and 15 ships maxed out.
It is not about being efficient at making credits, but rather having fun while I play the game.
And one thing did not coalesced with the other, so I did decomissioned my FC, which was open to all commanders.

Wow, that was a really good profit, congrats.
I just would like for it to generate that, without having to babysit the whole process.
I'm lazy. Lol

Sadly it is completely active involvement - but is entirely by choice (I have my own Role-Play in-game so 'working' for income is expected) - only made more fun just because of the FC involvement.
Passive income - I wouldn't honestly know - my 2 accounts with FCs bought them to be used, and moved, regularly, which is exactly what they do - as they are a major part of the game I'm currently playing.
When I wish to do anything 'legal' they will be moved out of the way for the duration, rather than left parked in inhabited space.

Good point, but you said that you had to spend HOURS each week to earn credits. I didn't realize that wasn't reality. With 20B credits, you have enough for FC maintenance for the next 25 years assuming 15M/wk expense. A little more truth in advertising is warranted. :)

You're planning on reading them your poetry aren't you?
Obviously both are on inara, had a quick look and both possessed capable ships, what they are actually flying I cannot see but I was a fair way away from the bubble anyway. I sent them both friend requests out of politeness and if need be would jump back to the system they boarded on.

I have also put a note on my inara carrier page that I do relocate without warning:)

I create large buy orders and sell at a loss to help my squadron out with money, last time I forgot to set my carrier to friends only some randoms managed to buy approx 20,000 units of palldium at 5% galactic average, that mistake cost me 2 billion space dollars.
