WHY!?

Why are there Commanders in HIP 20567 (In Titan Indra's system) blowing our ships up? I just had time to go in and get some missiles off at Indra this evening but was attacked and destroyed by a fellow commander!? It's not unusual anywhere else but here? I'm logging off for the night already! I guess I've never met a Goid lover before..

Not excusing gankers, but out of curiosity - since none of us can stop the sort of people who derive their pleasure out of ruining roleplaying for others – couldn't this be a good pretext to do speak to other commanders one may come across and organise such community oriented runs in groups, in order to defend against gankers militia-style?

In a way, that would be precisely the sort of emergent gameplay storytelling that makes for memorable experiences beyond any scripted events.
Turning a disadvantage into an adventure.

Unfortunately it sounds like you became a lol for degenerate's. Their only goal is to make other commanders go boom. As others have said, solo and pg or blocking are the best way to deal with the low life's while you try to save humanity at the Titans.

This is why open only anything can never work in this game

Yep, we had one who didn't know what he was doing but soon after they started showing up.
The reasons?
To get a rise out of you?
The glory of knowing they wasted the time of another human being?
They are bored?

You basically just asked why people are buttholes. If you can solve that one, you'll pretty much have crime and war sorted. (y)

I got nobbled by one of these pilots as well. I was coming back from a Titan encounter and my ship was in a bit of a state. I now just play in Solo when I'm working on the Titans to get my decal

If yer committed to Open my advice to you would be to get a Sidewinder and then block everyone who murders you

You probably still haven't.
It was just you were there and

also they knew their ship would be relatively safe from most weapons their victims would have equipped.

I reiterate a question. Has no one considered simply roleplaying around it, treating gankers like some psychotic, mind-controlled thargoid puppets?
Sounds to me like a perfect emergent gameplay opportunity, with the right mindset.
Why on earth go solo and give some jackass satisfaction?
Use imagination, play in the open, organize militia groups for such runs and treat them as part of the narrative till they get bored or get their ass handed to them.

It's been done before - with some gankers complaining about harassment because they were targeted when they weren't ganking.

Then there's the "what's in it for the escorts" question - and the high likelihood that most escort trips will be uneventful.

Then there's the "why reward them with content" position. They choose to do what they do - they don't control how others react to what they do.

No offense to anyone personally, but those arguments seem wildly bizzare to me. I don't know, perhaps I'm strange.

1. Gankers complaining they're being harrased: A non-argument. Same answer as for their victims i.e. fight back, run, or f-off to play solo or block users. It's Elite Dangerous not Elite Children's Birthday Party as someone above perfectly summarised. I fail to see how gankers complaining changes anything.

2. What's in it for the escorts: Everything. Gameplay. Roleplay. Content. Emergence. Interaction. Possibility of things happening, in full dynamic non-scripted mode. Promise them few canisters of something at the end of the run. Also - it does not need to be escorts, just people organised into groups. Strength in numbers.

3. Why reward them with content: Again, I simply cannot fathom the logic. That's about on par with a ganker going "I don't like how people use this game to roleplay as traders. Why reward them with content?" You play one way. They play another way. Consider them a permanent part of the game world as pirates, psychos, whatever. What's the point of crying about things not being exactly as you want them to be? I just don't get it.

We're all different.

"It's Elite Dangerous" is something of a meme now - as DBOBE explained the reason for the name long ago.

While the attackers and defenders may have fun, no-one seems to consider the "herd". They don't need either.

They're not a permanent part of the game world for all players - as they can be removed completely or individually by each player. There's little point in complaining about them, because they've been around since before the game launched - some of them offering the sage advice "git gud or go Solo", which some players took heed of (but not in the way those offering the advice wanted them to).

Then there's the fact that in-the-same-instance PvP is an entirely optional component of the game and is not a required part of any in-game feature at this time - which means that the game will have attracted players with zero interest in PvP as well as players who like shooting at other players.

At the end of the day, games are played for fun - and if some players aren't fun to play with then there's no need, in this game, for any player to spend their time playing with them.

Join Mobius (PVE) or just go Solo - problem solved

From everything you said it would appear you are basically in agreement with me then.

There is no ganking problem.
There is no point complaining.
These players will be part of the gameworld, equally for everyone, and they have the right to play the way they do.

Instead of complaining about it, asking why or saying that the game is bad for not preventing this - either play solo, or use your imagination and play in the open with implicit understanding that all sorts will be out there. Just like in real life.

Sort of.
There is no ganking problem.
That depends on who is asked - for some the game lacks a co-operative game mode without PvP.
There is no point complaining.
Complaining has not improved the situation thus far.

For those who choose to instance with them, indeed.

Because there's no point. We visit 'popular systems' to perform a particular task. Time wasting mupppets are time wasting muppets delaying performance of initial task. Solo/Mobius/Block when visiting 'popular systems' = time saved. Kinda like asking why take a detour through the backroads instead of sitting in stationary traffic...
