If you search and read what has been posted you would know that until launch only the kick starter funds were used none of the pre order cash was touched until after launch so ATM they have plenty of cash in the kitty.
Actually blame the devs for this, they did not deliver on the offline mode these people wanted and instead the implemented solo mode which defeats the purpose of playing online. There should be online and there should be solo-offline. solo-online is an oxymoron.
Yes but the solo community is still happy with the outcome at the cost of poor open mode stability. They don't give rat's ass about the open play and as long as their solo mode is stable, open play is just going to fall apart and this game is going to bleed even more players and eventually die.

Err, I wasn't really getting at where the funds are coming from. The point is actually that maintaining the servers won't add to a significant amount. To pluck a figure out the air, £50K a year, or 1000 copies of the game.
Just replying to this so it goes in my "Forum Activity" and gives me something else to pull out in a years time so those of us still enjoying the game in Open-Mode can all have a good laugh.
Subscriptions mean content. Content as in "story". As in "Customer Support". Etc.
You can't justify a subscription model for the current game. If you want to add a subscription then you have to pump as much content as WoW for people to even consider it. they're using a P2P network system that doesn't cost them anything and reduces their need for central servers, adding subs would just be a bait and switch tactic at this point. (Not that they haven't attempted it before, I know, sadly.)

To be fair this game has a long way to go to surpass X3R/X3TC as the best single player space game. A long way.
