Will VR be a big boost

That's awesome. Now where's that $1000 I had spare to buy one...

Oh... Rent. Gas. Electric. Loan. Car. Second car. Bigass TV and surround system. Anything the wife wants...

That's me out. But still, Elite Dangerous. Bare Naked Elite Dangerous.. None of that 100% immersion for me. And that makes me the better pilot. I look left I see my cat. I look right I see my Star Wars poster. I look up, ceiling needs painting. I look down... Purple underwear.
Oh... Boom. Damn you spinning spacestation.

Yup, nothing like hoping a gaming peripheral best suited to a niche market with money to burn is going to 'save' FD and the future of Elite Dangerous.
I also imagine all those players who can afford it, are also heavily invested in Space Person and will probably leave Ed for dust when that game eventually turns up.

VR is too expensive to be mainstream at the moment, especially if most people will also need to buy a high-end GFX card to meet requirements. Once it becomes cheaper, though, I'm looking forward to delving into my savings and spending it on tech.

But it won't become cheaper. It's niche. It will be like Hi Res audio for Hi Fi freaks. And the first time you knock your beer all over the keyboard, the cat leaps into your lap or your girlfriend/boyfriend/multiple partners disowns you and threatens to kick you out the house. You will sell it and go back to a nice big 30" wide-screen monitor where people can't sneak up on you and poke you in the ribs causing you to crash you 200 Mil Anaconda on some God forsaken planet 30 000 ly from home.
See, because it's niche it will be about quality and not quantity. If anything it will become more expensive.

Player Immersion = major boost
Player Gameplay = minor boost or negative impact. Overall negligent on pilots abilities considering headtracker has been around a long time and doesn't prevent you seeing hotkeys etc.

If you are talking monetarily then a little bit but no in the grand scheme of things. People that want VR games probably already have Elite. The number that are buying VR and will then buy Elite are probably too small to blip on Frontiers charts given the price of the headset etc. It may however make a difference just having Elite on the front page again.

I bought a second hand DK2, and it has definitely increased the playability for me. The only downside is when I have to type, but I do know the layout of the keyboard, so not too many typos.

VR will absolutely be getting cheaper, you have my word. Other companies will start popping out of the woodwork in a few years making cheaper VR helmets. China will probably have a few cheap companies. It's not going to be as "Niche" as some of you are saying, just look at Samsung VR gear, 99 bucks if you have the right smartphone. I know that's not something you can play ED on, just saying, it's already hitting the main stream. And yes, I am really looking forward to playing Elite in VR, I think it will be awesome.

And another thing...

Fads.

3D TV... Yeah, how many of them do you see sitting in the pawn shops.

You know they're are already reports of players so immersed they're ending up in hospital right.

GO OUTSIDE! IMMERSION! HILLS AND MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS AND LAKES AND OCEANS AND DESERTS AND BEACHES AND SKIES AND TREES AND HEDGES AND GREEN FIELDS...

I despair at the Human Race I really do.

All racing to your own Matrix existence like demented, manipulated drug induced lemmings.

This is taken a thead in the VR section and it's my experience playing ED in VR for the first time. I was comparing ED in 3D with VR. I haven't stopped playing in VR since. :)

[I created the 3D Vision fix so I'm fairly sure I needn't worry about hurting my own feelings...]

tl;dr: VR (DK2) wins, obviously.

I have gamed in 3D for nearly 10 years now. I can't no longer play in 2D because I can't get immersed. I am addicted to games. I eat drink dream games. BUT can effortlessly walk past any game when not in 3D. I currently have a DK2 on loan from a kind friend.

***DAY 1***

I put it on and executed the OR software's desktop simulator to acclimatise. Pretty cool! I was in the room. Yes I tried to touch the card towers.

Ran ED:H

ROUND #1 - DK2

My experience went something like this:
Looked around the cockpit of my Asp E.
Noticed how big it was.
Looked at the floor.
Felt vertigo (the good kind).
Noticed I was actually holding my breath. Literally took my breath away!
Lined up for docking at an outpost (FA Off at all times)
Noticed how big it was.
Double take of the size of the outpost.

Docked
Noticed the blur
Noticed I had to keep the head kit at precisely the right place to keep the blur to a minimum
Noticed I really had to tighten the headgear
Noticed the 'dots'
Noticed the text!
Noticed I was conscious of the headgear.
Noticed I had to sit up really straight.

Undocked
Tried some combat
Noticed the blur
Took off the unit

INTERLUDE

Felt actual dismay at how small my 27" monitor now looked.
Marvelled at how clear and vibrant it was.

ROUND #2 3D Vision + EDTracker Pro

Noticed how sensitive I had the headtracking
Turned down sensitivity
Aware of the 'light' aspect of VR 'lite'.
Considered how much smaller things seemed
But very much aware at how much brighter and clearer things seemed in game
Quickly back in the immersion zone
Wife called me to bed.

INTERLUDE

Snuck in a quick Rift demo. Temple Run clone. My first impression of 3rd person perspective games in VR wasn't great. Frankly 3D Vision won here, with regard immersion in similar games (toyification, looking down a fixed perspective like guns etc.)
Quit game
Star Conflict - also pants bar looking down at the floor which resulted in good vertigo.
Remembered weight
Remembered text
Remembered bad things basically
Looked at the cables
Wasn't sure what to do with it
Boxed the headgear but kept the camera plugged in

***DAY 2***

Serious, I mean SERIOUS cogitation about giving the DK2 another go or not.
Decided I was borrowing it so might not get another chance.
Unboxed and connected DK2

ROUND #3 - DK2

Blown away
Blown away
Blown away
Looked at the size of the handles in the Asp E
Blown away

Looked at the planet
Landed
Bummed about in the SRV
Realised I was really enjoying just jumping about on the planet.
Didn't want to leave the surface
Returned to the ship
Noticed it looked massive

Swapped the Asp E for a DBS (super quick, super manoeuvrable, super FOV)
Returned to planet
FA off
Low flying
Red impact lights flashing
Thrilling

Crossed a ravine
First thoughts: jumping across this in the SRV would be SWEET!

Boosted hitting the lateral thruster
Watched the surface rapidly drop away from me.

GAME OVER

VERDICT

DK2 wins

BUT

I could return to VR-lite, push come shove and very quickly re-acclimatise. But I REALLY couldn't play ED in 2D. I think going back to VR-lite is doable because it is in stereo which, let's face it is the biggest deal when it comes to VR and you also have head tracking, which is nice too.

Anyway!!!
Had to get that off my chest.

p.s.

As promised...

DBS is the best ship to fly using VR: FACT!

I'm pretty sure everybody is off playing Eve Valkyrie...
To my knowledge not many ED VRs user are, why would you when you have Arena? Very VERY similar. EV is gamepad only though!

I sense you were trying to be funny... I'd advise not to... but that's just my opinion. Also caps lock makes my eyes bleed.

I don't see too many space stations or asteroids during my walks through trees and hedges and green fields. And there are no giant laser bolts and space-battles when walking along deserts or beaches.

Immersion does not mean realism it means how easily your brain can accept and get, um, well immersed. In the world portrayed. I'll never be able to experience space and FTL in real life. The world can be complete fantasy like Skyrim/Fallout but if it feels real enough and you feel like it's you in there not an avatar you are merely controlling it gives a big boost to plausibility and enjoyment for many of us, don't knock it till you try it.

I agree with Alex Brentnall. The people who are currently buying the VR headsets at the moment are enthusiasts. They've had their noses pressed against the closed shop window for many months now. They had wanted to play a VR game but none were available. They did the next best thing and bought a game which was compatible. There had been many posts on this forum over the past few months about how people had bought Elite in preparation of the coming of the headsets.

Elite sales has already been influenced by its VR compatibility.

Will see...VR will do better then MS Kinect, but were are those "killer" games, that will sell VR?
I still love Elite, but I know that its a niche game...Elite is not for mass market..like popular fps games (BF, Division etc)

I think there will be a nice halo effect for ED from the VR headsets' launches, even if the number of VR headset buyers is necessarily relatively small.

ED has a sweet spot - it's a much bigger and more finished game than almost all the VR-only titles - the other VR space shooters are shallow arcade games - it has multiplayer and crossplay with non VR players and a large player base. When people are done trying out the various demo/mobile game sized experiences, ED is there as a real game to immerse yourself into.

VR is for enthusiasts now, but it will expand. It's a challenge to FD, to get ED onto the PSVR mass market for this holiday season, and to iron out the setup wrinkles that might put off the more casual PC VR buyer from learning the ropes.

Yes, agree 100%. FD has actually had incredible foresight to get ED into the "starting lineup" of VR games so to say, and to be by far the most advanced of that starting lineup. I don't see how this could be anything but a boost for the game.

Not for a couple of years I would say, it's simply too expensive at the moment unless you're a flush early adopter of technology.

Cheers,

Drew.

I think even 5 years +, before that a large majority of players use the VR
