Will VR be a big boost

GO OUTSIDE! IMMERSION! HILLS AND MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS AND LAKES AND OCEANS AND DESERTS AND BEACHES AND SKIES AND TREES AND HEDGES AND GREEN FIELDS...

I despair at the Human Race I really do.

All racing to your own Matrix existence like demented, manipulated drug induced lemmings.

and yet here you are, ignoring the real world and posting on here!

Oh not at all, I think everyone should try it at least once or get a demo from a friend, especially the naysayers. Am not implying that people are idiots for not having VR :/ I wouldn't judge anyone for not using a HOTAS, or avoiding a triple screen setup due to budgets.

Whatever works best for you within your budget, personally I've saved money going down the VR route, normally I would be upgrading my screens, heck I even purchased a big projector a few years back trying to increase immersion. One little HMD blew all of that out of the water in an instant, greatly exceeding what I thought was possible with today's technology.

Okay yeah, I've experienced the DK2 for about 30mins (I could have stayed there all day!) which I admit, it is an awesome experience..I spent more time looking around me than actually playing the game! & what you always say is true about it being literally a game changer.
.
I will at some point go VR..but I only recently got a 50in TV for £600 (the same TV was £1300 last June) - I was slumming it with a LG 32in 120hz (guess what I use that for now??) before the prices bombed..hoping for something similar with the latest headsets!
.
I read my post back & it did sound like I was having a go..that wasn't my intention! Kudos for sharing your extensive knowledge on this subject, as well as many others on the forums:D

For me, this picture says it all. Also, I've never had a problem navigating the galaxy map in VR and never needed to take off the DK2 while playing ED. I can understand if you have issues finding systems if you can't touch type, but head movements shoudn't be moving the cursor unless the controls are set up wrong.

VR is gonna be big.. trust me..

but to go VR, one must ensure its PC have the power,.. so it's gonna be PC upgrades & VR ..
then again.. as always .. VR Resolution..

So, big or not, I'm gonna wait for 4K VR .. and of course without the need to run 8 GPUs...

And another thing...

Fads.

3D TV... Yeah, how many of them do you see sitting in the pawn shops.

You know they're are already reports of players so immersed they're ending up in hospital right.

GO OUTSIDE! IMMERSION! HILLS AND MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS AND LAKES AND OCEANS AND DESERTS AND BEACHES AND SKIES AND TREES AND HEDGES AND GREEN FIELDS...

My youngest son (21 months old) talks more sense than this. No offence.

The Imperial courier canyon run clinched it for me.

An undeniable boost to gameplay and immersion especially for a game like ED.

I'm currently running a 980TI Strix with a cheap monitor so an Oculus is the logical next step given the price of high-end monitors.

That's awesome. Now where's that $1000 I had spare to buy one...

Oh... Rent. Gas. Electric. Loan. Car. Second car. Bigass TV and surround system. Anything the wife wants...

That's me out. But still, Elite Dangerous. Bare Naked Elite Dangerous.. None of that 100% immersion for me. And that makes me the better pilot. I look left I see my cat. I look right I see my Star Wars poster. I look up, ceiling needs painting. I look down... Purple underwear.
Oh... Boom. Damn you spinning spacestation.

LOL, yeah buddy you're a true homegrown space pilot. However a cat as a co pilot is awesome, I just got a parrot shouting in my left ear "TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE, TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE" Don't know where the heck he got that frase from?

B.O.T, VR is awesome and FD are in the lead for sure, I hope when we get EVA they will make it great too. The FPS part will be very difficult, to much head bob and you will puke, nothing will make you feel like you're floating.

Oh, yes, I did forget one of the few drawbacks to VR; motion sickness. When I am out in the SRV I can only drive it for short periods, otherwise I will be sick. There is an option in the Graphics menu to lock the view to the horizon, and it helps, but it does not eliminate said motion sickness. I have been told (but have not yet had enough time to confirm it) that over time you do get used to it.

The issue comes about as your true sense of balance (the inner ear) does not tally with what your eyes are telling you, and your brains' sense of balance gets confused.

In spite of this, I will continue playing ED through the VR headset. The game is totally different than when played via a monitor setup. If you are under attack, you can physically look for your attacker (spot them on the sensor disc, and then look in the relevant direction), without having to wait for them to hove into view on the monitor. It certainly helps in combat (and is now only restricted by the view through the cockpit Perspex).

If you do decide to go the VR route, and you can find a reliable one (might take a few goes though) the Saitek (read Mad Catz) X52 is a good choice, partly because it is the one the in game controls are based on. For the keyboard issue, there are a couple of keys that are tactile marked; "F", "J", and numeric pad "5". I know the layout of the keyboard, but when I want to type out a long message I take off the headset, line it up properly, and then use my monitor to type by.

Oh right.. forgot about typing messages. So it's not possible to switch 100% to VR then. That's a shame :(
Maybe once they introduce some VR gloves so you'll be able to see your hands and type on virtual keyboard (and use some other switches in ships, boats, cars, browsing through menus etc.).... but that's the future.

Those people who can touch type won't have a problem. I cannot touch type, but I do know the layout well enough to be able to type slowly (correcting any typos before I send the message). Apparently the HTC Vive will have a camera built into it, so you can click a button, turn on the camera, and see the real things around you, as well as the VR generated items.

Only when in EVA mode, when you need to walk, it will be different (I hope).

Well, since we start with shipwalking and our ships dont have gravity, our IVA will be very much like EVA I'd guess.

Yeah Mag-boots are incorporated into the flight suits in the law so it should function largely like a normal fps.

Not according to the novels, magboots provide a more fluid, floaty movement.

Sounds cumbersome,

It'll be interesting to see how they pull it off.

There is some potential for some pretty original game play here, I'd like to be able to engage and disengage the mag function for instance for rapid or more tactical movement. Big challenges in themselves.

But it won't become cheaper. It's niche. It will be like Hi Res audio for Hi Fi freaks. And the first time you knock your beer all over the keyboard, the cat leaps into your lap or your girlfriend/boyfriend/multiple partners disowns you and threatens to kick you out the house. You will sell it and go back to a nice big 30" wide-screen monitor where people can't sneak up on you and poke you in the ribs causing you to crash you 200 Mil Anaconda on some God forsaken planet 30 000 ly from home.
See, because it's niche it will be about quality and not quantity. If anything it will become more expensive.

You never tried it, right? ... don't worry... you will at some point, then reflect about this message of yours and feel cringy.

I have to use a mic for chatting to other cmdrs as although I can touch type, it is a real immersion breaker. Essentially anything that forces you to take your hands away from the hotas is best avoided.

To add another response to the OP, VR is expensive right now but that will change as all revolutionary technology does essentially get cheaper to produce and sell when scaling up the production. I confidently wager that every person saying "it's a fad" has not played a native VR game or they had a bad experience because they are susceptible to VR sickness.

It'll get cheaper though as some company will design a model that is aimed at the mass market and not the niche market. The current PC VR options of Rift or Vive is cutting edge tech, in 2-3 years though this will be quite different.

ED in a Rift (even DK2) is very much an memorable experience, using the new 1.3 RT it has never been better!

This. You see the smile on that guys face. That could be you.
