Will you ditch the Python for the Chieftain

So it only has 2xC5, 1xC4 and 2xC2 internal compartments? No room for any useful SCB. That's laughably bad and just completely killed off my excitement for the ship. And this is supposed to be "between Gunship and Python" as they stated in the vid? Just LOL. It's not going to stand a chance even against a Dropship. Gunships and Pythons will crush it.

:(

Not quite. The normal internals are 2xC5, 1xC4 and 2xC2, but then it has 3xC4 military slots too. Pretty good for a combat ship, crap for doing anything else.

Nope, it's crap... C4 is too small to fit meaningful SCBs. HRPs and MRPs are nice, but other ships can fit more (and bigger) of them in their normal compartments.

Just compare it to the Dropship:

Dropship: 1x C5 shields, 1x C6 SCB, 1x C5 SCB, 3x C4 HRP/MRP, 2x C3 HRP/MRP, 1x FSD Interdictor
Chieftain: 1x C5 shields, 1x C5 SCB, 3x C4 HRP/MRP, 1x C2 HRP/MRP, 1x FSD Interdictor

-> The Dropship can fit one extra C6 SCB and also more HRP/MRPs. Wow yeah... really great combat ship, this Chieftain thing. [where is it]

They always keep forgetting SCBs, when designing combat ships... If one or two of those military slots were C6, it would be a completely different beast.

If you will, if not already, ditch python for a fas, you will ditch python for a chieftain.
Chieftain and fas have
same core,
almost same internals(5522+444 vs 55322+44),
almost same weapons(332111 vs 3322),
same utility,
almost same speed and maneuverability on paper (fas is slightly faster and has slightly better yaw),
almost same shield(234 vs 213, both 5a shield)
and chieftain is about 70 tons lighter.
What? Jump range? I use 2d fsd + 1c fuel tank for all combat ships so 0.6ly is not that different from 0.5ly jump range imo.
The only thing unknown is how lateral/vertical thrusters perform.

No need to sell anything

Just buy one or two, A rate and engineer, fly around a bit until the novelty wears off in a day or two

And then get back in an Anaconda or a Python to get things done

So it goes

Reminds me, "Now where did I leave that T-10"?

You don't understand how hull/hybrid tanks or real PVP combat works, right?

Is that also why the FDL is such a bad and unpopular combat ship?

It might turn out as a not so good ship, we will see, but I think it cant only be boiled down to this. Lets see how the base shield and armor look, for example.... (and yeah, I know the FDL has other benefits, but thats why I am saying we should look at all aspects before we judge it. If you can go bi-weave hull tank, you dont really need SCBs do you?)

Of course not, but I might semi-retire my combat loaded Vulture explorer ship, The Ronin in favor of the Chieftain. To that end, the Chieftain seems like a nearly ideal ship upgrade to me. :)

By the way, it's a huge deal for me since The Ronin has been my main ship in the game for over two years now. See the top link in my signature and the second post in that thread for more info on that, if you like.

Cheers.

Curious to know what folks thoughts are now after seeing the ship on the live stream. :p

Only thing I might prefer differently than what I've seen so far from it are maybe something like two size 5 combat module slots and a size 3 or 2 free module slot instead of 3 size 4 combat module slots. This way I wouldn't have to choose between an SRV and an AFMU for using it as a multi-role combat explorer ship.

The ship looks nearly perfect and well balanced for what it is and what I'd like using it for otherwise though, i.e., as an upgrade from my combat loaded Vulture explorer ship.

if it was only for sound and look then yes i would switch from python to chieftain. But the chieftain is a cmbat ship while the python is the best multi-role ship currently availible in the game. So i am pretty shure i will still use the python.

The Chieftain has too few internal slots to make it a good substitute for the Python. But I'll buy one and have both, use them for different roles.

The FdL makes up for the lack of SCBs with its incredibly strong base shields. Not gonna happen on the Chieftain with just 4 utility slots.

Yeah I know, but as I said I think we should wait for all the facts and see how it compares. I think with these internals, it might get similar armour as an FAS, right (or even a bit more maybe)? And also a C5 bi-weave shield. If the speed and maneuverability are good, do you think it would be worse compared to an FAS? The base shield might still be stronger (?) and it should have slightly more firepower.

Yep, the FAS is probably a good comparison... 3 feedback rails in those small hardpoints could probably even enable it to counter SCB-builds... it's not what I expected it to be, but will probably give it a try, when the beta arrives.

Still thinking it looks like an FAS upgrade/sidegrade. Definitely not an FDL competitor. Or Python for that matter (though I never saw that as a possibility anyway). Since there's no rank lock it will be a good alternative for non-federation pilots, and with the better jump range its still enticing for FAS owners.

Likewise for the Imperial Clipper. It's not quite a straight upgrade over either ship (the Clipper is faster and more durable, has slightly better firepower, better internals and is more agile apart from strafing, but is a lot bigger and has those infamously awful hardpoints), but a respectable alternative. The hardpoint placement on the Chieftain is literally perfect, the hardpoint size is not half bad, it's pretty agile and a bit on the slow side but not excessively so, and those military slots give you lots of options for hull tanking or abusing specialised SCBs (even more so considering it's a Lakon and therefore basically guaranteed to have good radiators), and it's flexible enough to be a decent non-haulage mission runner or medium fighter. And it's not rank locked, so new players or players who just can't be bothered grinding navy ranks can get a decent medium multi-role ship that doesn't require a 100+ million credit budget for an even half way practical fit. It won't replace my Python, but it has definitely replaced my Clipper and my heavily modded Viper IV (I wanted to see if enough engineering could turn it into a decent ship, and it actually wasn't half bad).
