Windows 10 - finally time to move?

.........

Maybe you should have read my post #9 in August (where I reported the result of my moving to W10) before quoting my OP for your post. However, I am sure that the helpful information you took the time to pass on will be useful to other readers now that the W7 funeral is upon us.

Sorry, didn't realise it was an old thread since it is posted on the forum as a "new post". I should have realized someone had simply added to your old thread. o7

So Microsoft are ripping us off, again.

Just basically been told that I have buy a new P.C., because mine is over 3 years old. I am not playing games on it, just the normal day to day stuff. This, emails, a bit of you-tube etc. So why do I have to spend more money, that I cannot afford, when everything I expect my current laptop to do, is being done, without issues.

The 'sales pitch' states that my laptop is at risk. Nothing new there, I have been using another security system for years, as the one windows installed, is rubbish.

The sales pitch, sounds more like threats to me. Buy our product or else and not just buy the windows 10, but another laptop as well.

So what is the worst that can happen?

£120 just for the software? Are they having a laugh. Of course they are.

My PC is >5 years old and I had no problem with free upgrading from W7 to W10 (last Saturday) over the mentioned Media Creation Tool. It runs quite nicely.

My Laptop is 2011. it is working as well as the day I brought it.

As I mentioned above (post #9) I had bought the £120 version and then when I didn't need it (as the current W7 key on the machine was accepted automatically) microsoft issued a refund immediately. So no need to buy any version of W10, just run the upgrade using the media creation tool as others have mentioned (see post #5).

I have had a look at that and it goes way over my head. However. It looks like the best option for me to take.

I will ask the spawn upstairs for his help, no doubt, him being a millennial, he will tell me that I need buy a now laptop as well.

Thanks guys. The last surviving crew member, signing off.

I've upgraded several old PC's and laptops to W10 without any problems at no cost. All you need is a valid key from W7 or 8.X

We've crated a custom installer that strips out everything we don't want/like about W10 but theres no doubt that the W10 core is an improvement.

Both crating a custom installer and doing for free are not something everyone will want to do, but the information is on the interwebs for anyone interested.

Recently did an old AMD FX8350 box just doing the upgrade process and a valid Win7 key. No problems at all.

We were reluctant, but then again we also dragged our heels when Win 7 was introduced and we had to leave XP.

Win 10 is a good upgrade as long as you don't register with an MS account and strip out the telemetry.

For the average user, just doing the upgrade will likely be no more annoying than what they already have on Win 7

Errr...

I can't play videos? Gifs yes, but no videos, just get the loading symbol rolling constantly.

Tried stuff on fasebook, you-tube and BBC Iplayer. nothing is playing.

After I noticed this, Java asked to up-date and I let it, still no difference.

Try a different browser, Firefox for example.
Might as well download VLC media player too.

I always use firefox. I will try the VLC.

Close to 8 hours, this is not my idea of fun.

I use Firefox and have no issues playing videos - BBC, yootoob, whatever. I have a script blocker (NoScript) in which I have to give sites / domains permissions at times - most are whitelisted - some, like Soundcloud and The Guardian videos had to be added.

W10 has a built-in video player (seems to be just called "Films & TV") - does that work for you?

Hi Folks :)

I'm contemplating 'upgrading' to windows 10 from win 7 (retail home version). The way I was thinking of doing it was to buy a new SSD (the present one is only 250 gb) to something like 500 GB or even 1 TB, buying a retail version of Win 10 (not sure which version at the moment) and doing a clean install on the new drive.
So, do I disconnect the old 250 Gb drive, install the new drive on the original SATA cable (without disconnecting it from the motherboard) and load the new OS?
The other question is, do I need to disconnect the other storage drives I've got (2 Weston digital) drives and then connect them back up once the new OS is installed on the new 'C' drive, or can I leave them connected whilst I'm installing Win 10?...will win 10 recognize them as storage/spare drives on installation of the new OS?
I take it that my original 'C' drive with win 7 on it would then (once connected to a spare SATA connection after istallation) would then revert to another 'storage drive'?

I've also only got 8 gig of ram in the machine at the moment, is it worth upgrading that also to say 16 or 32 gig or is that ok for now (I only play Elite on this machine and don't really use it for any other games programs etc).
I have another computer that's running win 7, also a home premium version that I use for other stuff (though that also has Elite installed, but it's a slightly lower spec. than the main one I use for playing Elite).
So just to make it clear, I have 2 separate Win 7 home premium retail CD disks, one for each of the 2 machines. I thought I'd mention this as perhaps I could upgrade the former less spec. machine at some point to win 10 by just upgrading the OS on that machine from the Microsoft website?

Any info or suggestions welcome!

Jack. :)
