Windows 10 - finally time to move?

So I sorted the problem, I used an old technical engineers method. A 7lb hammer.

No. I jest. I put it to bed last night, as was getting close, to bouncing my laptop, off of the wall.

Then this morning had another look. My laptop was not seeing any graphic drivers and so i did a bit of goggling and found re-set option. Windows key + ctrl + shift + B. Iy took about 10 seconds to get my fingers around it and now it seems to be sorted.

Again, thanks guys, rep to you all.

So i thought that I had sorted the problem, but no.

I can play one video and then it stops working and the only way to get another to play, is restart my laptop.

It also seems that this only works for you tube. Everything else fails to run.

My PC cannot find any graphics system or drivers.

You don't need to buy a copy of W10 - your W7 keys will work just fine.

Indeed. Very few people seem to realize this. Microsoft seems to be intend on delivering free upgrades for the time being. They are just not advertising it, which I think is stupid, because they could use a bit of goodwill.

I just upgraded my Windows 7 ultra to Windows 10 Pro, half an hour ago. I have not encountered any problems. It was automatically activated.
It even recognized my second OS and created a dual boot screen for it.

Every single piece of software runs fine so far. Of course Windows 10 creates a horribly convoluted mess with its new awful alphabetic Start menu, but I will sort that out later.
And I will also need to take care of Microsoft's disgusting privacy violations asap. I already have a bunch of tools to repair that mess too.

What's the laptop's make & model?
Does it have a discrete graphics card or only integrated one (Intel HD graphics or AMD APU)?

You can move to windows 10. Turn off auto updates though. Do not let them roll anything out to your computer on launch day.
This. So much this.
Allowing updates automatically is basically asking them to brick your system, delete all your documents, or whatever they decide to break with the latest patch before frantically freezing the rollout to figure out what went wrong.
I have yet to find a way of setting updates to be like I had it in W7 - notify but not download - all I can see is the defer for a period or up to a date - is there a way to get W10 to notify but not download?
There are third party Win10 update killers which run in the background and persistently kill the Win10 auto updater each time it reloads itself.

I am so angry now, the whole thing has been a waste of two days. I have lost all of my old downloads. I can only play one video each time I log on the pc. Because Microsoft decides to change the way we do things, each time they make a new version of windows, I have no idea what I am doing and to top it all off. I have another laptop which is solely devoted to playing Elite, (I am having to use now) which runs on windows 10, has now decided to take on all of the settings, my other, now usless laptop has. On my elite laptop, I have/had an elite screenshot, from my early days of playing the game, as the background. Not any more. Now I have the Nikki Lauda background, I have on the old laptop. The colours/themes have all changed, to the same as is on the other laptop. What the hell, is that all about?

I might as well go and live with my mother and be told what to do, what I can do and let something else, dictate when I do anything and how I 'will be' doing it.

I am thinking about running the old laptop on windows 8. It is 8 years old and I have no intention of buying another one anytime soon. As the spawn upstairs, says it may be too old for running windows 10. This still does not solve the lost downloads issue.

Tosh satellite pro C660-2je.

I have no idea. I think it is in the CPU. As I often say. This stuff goes way over my head, sorry about that, but that is the way it is.

They need a slap, for constantly changing the way things are set out and done. Can't find a one click access to so many things and to cap it off. Every time I try and open anything on the windows + X or left click, it opens a window about zip files and then says my zip has expired and then I can't open it. why why why? the whole thing is one big stitch-up and wind up.

I have been resolute so far with remaining on Windows 7pro but am now wondering if the time has finally come to shift to Windows 10. I would be interested to hear some informed opinions about methodology (upgrade or clean install), version (home or pro) and pitfalls (how to avoid bloatware, intrusive monitoring etc).

Apart from E D - I use three flight simulators which have a LOT of addons so a clean install would mean a lot of work re-installing. The other consideration is that I have twin computers networked - any issues about networking (both need W10 or can I keep W7pro on one)?

I am not a tyro in computing but I have not kept up with Windows 10 since the WX nag issue yonks ago.

Cheers

I recently retired my last PC with Windows 7, as well as built a new gaming PC with Windows 10, and here's my thoughts:

I'd recommend buying a new SSD to be your primary boot drive for Windows 10, and making your current Windows 7 drive a secondary drive, or just keep it as a spare. While you could clone your Win7 drive and use the clone as the drive you upgrade to 10, for me a clean install is the best way to go.

Yes, with a clean install you'll need to reinstall everything, but if the games you're playing today are games you own digitally, then re-installing them is a piece of cake - you just que them up and walk away.

And adding your Win7 drive back in as a secondary drive means any files you need can be copied quickly.

I'd also recommend Windows 10 Home for gaming as in many ways it's faster than Pro (I always use Pro at work, and have multiple PCs with each.)

I also have ZERO issues networking Windows 7 and 10 - it's something I've been doing this for several years (until I just retired my last Win7 PC.)

I know a lot of people think Win10 is garbage, but I'm honestly glad to have Windows 7 out of my life. Having run them side by side for several years I've really come to appreciate MOST of the changes in Windows 10 ;-)

But please don't put a MAC or Chromebook in front of me - I have family members that "swear by them," but whenever I have to use either I only end up "swearing AT them" ;-) (I do like my iPad though!)

Good luck!

This happens if you use the "Microsoft Account" to log in on the machine (I think). Better to refuse that and create & use an "offline account", which (contrary to the account creation warnings) has all functionality you'll ever need on W10. The e-mail bound "Microsoft Account"/login makes your settings tranferrable.

Also note that the only way to use the offline account option on newer builds of Windows 10 is to not be connected to the internet while installing it.

IIRC my gaming pc was connected when I installed a clean W10 on it.
I just refused to give an e-mail adress, proceeded and on the left side(ish) bottom there was an option to create a "limited account", which in fact is not in any way limited, it just isn't tied to a M$ account connected to the e-mail address.
Of course, unplugging the network cable or not configuring wi-fi until you've logged in as an "offline" user is the way to be sure. :)

So Microsoft are ripping us off, again.

Just basically been told that I have buy a new P.C., because mine is over 3 years old. I am not playing games on it, just the normal day to day stuff. This, emails, a bit of you-tube etc. So why do I have to spend more money, that I cannot afford, when everything I expect my current laptop to do, is being done, without issues.

The 'sales pitch' states that my laptop is at risk. Nothing new there, I have been using another security system for years, as the one windows installed, is rubbish.

The sales pitch, sounds more like threats to me. Buy our product or else and not just buy the windows 10, but another laptop as well.

So what is the worst that can happen?

£120 just for the software? Are they having a laugh. Of course they are.
It's free it doesn't cost a cent you can use the media creation tool do a clean install upgrade and it uses your old key.

During the install the paranoid of us can turn off everything that they can see there. I send telemetry to improve Windows myself. Insider even.
I'm testing this right now
Want to lock down anything at the network level for under 50$?
Raspberry Pi Hole allows full control of all out and inbound ports, has a webpage UI, replace your crappy DNS service ...

Quick Google tells it uses Intel HD 3000 integrated GPU.
This link might help:
Apparently, it is not a 3000. Well, not mentioned of 3000 in the updates it has offered. It offered 16 to update; but stated I needed to pay and go pro, to update all of them. So I just updated everything 'intell' related. about 6 of them. it is still downloading. This is about the 8th fix, I have downloaded over the last two days.

Ugh. Of course, same brand & model name come in different configurations. Sorry, my bad.
To check wich GPU you lappy uses, you could open Settings - System - Display - Advanced Display Settings
or run dxdiag & look at the display tab.

80% of what you just said, went right over my head. Clean install. Read that few times here, makes no sense to me.

I have a serious headache, getting to the point, where I just want to chuck it all in. Each and every time, I try to update, install or fix anything, it is asking me questions, or gives me options, that I do not understand. As I have said before, this is not what I do and have always had issues with understanding how all this stuff works etc.. And of course, just as I get to begin to understand something, they change it.

As I have said before. Thanks guys, but it is looking more and more like, that I am going to have to fork out another £300 - £400 on a new computer. Simply because Microsoft, says so. Along with the fact, that I seem to have lost 9 years of research, into distilling and all of my tree references. I type anything into the windows 10 P.C search and it sends me to the inter-web and then asks. 'was this helpful?' I know I asked for everything to be backed up, but there is no back up to be found, on that LP. I slept on it last night, I'll do the same again tonight.
