Winter 2023 DLC Speculation

If we’re throwing out vague ideas what about Unique Animal Pack?

Can include a widespread of animals that are unique and unlike any other, you can fit a lot of high requested animals in here, pelican species, shoebill, walrus, spider monkey, spoonbill, echidna, Saiga, Gerenuk, etc.
Oooh that's an interesting concept for a pack. Going to try this and see if it fits.

Walrus - Headliner, though I'm not sure if this would count since it does resemble other pennipeds
Saiga Antelope - though similar to plenty of other antelopes, it is visually distinct, even if only in the face. Not sure that's enough though.
Echidna (any species) - pretty self explanatory and definitely unique in its own way.
Aye Aye -this one might be a strech, since it is a lemur, but looks completely different from any other lemurs.
Shoebill - similar to other birds in general but unique looking as well.
Coatimundi (any species) - Even though there's more than one species, collectively there's nothing else like this outside of that.
Wolverine - not to specifically put this last, but I wavered on if it is truly unique or not. Honestly, while it resembles some other animals in passing, I don't think the similarities are too deep. So I'm counting it.

Not sure about the exhibit animal, but I do think this is a start.

For my version of the Unique Animal Pack, I am only choosing animals from families so far unrepresented in the game. While a number of popular animals would be left out of my version (there would be no new bovids, cervids, canids, felids etc.), there are still plenty of interesting options.

Great white pelican - Planet Zoo not only has no species of pelicans, but the entire wider Pelecanidae family (also comprising ibises, spoonbills, herons and the shoebill and hamerkop) remains absent. I decided that, if just one of these was to come to the game, it has to be this widely-kept and geographically widespread pelican. It would provide a new species for African, Asian and European sections and is one of the most commonly-kept species of large habitat birds in captivity. This would possibly be the species I choose as the headliner for the pack.
1697207054551.png

Indian spotted chevrotain - Among the ungulates the most pressing inclusion for me personally is a member of the Tragulidae, a small family of chevrotains or mouse deer. This is one of the most attractive species of chevrotain, that would add a new smaller mammal to an unrepresented part of the world and is also commonly kept in zoos in its native India, so would fit as a realistic animal inclusion.
1697207322677.png

Nandinia - For the prerequisite terrestrial carnivore representation, I have picked this rather obscure species from the forests and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. They are the only living members of their own family, the Nandiniidae. Although often referred to as the African palm civet this is a misnomer, as true civets are more closely related to tigers than to the nandinia. This would add the first arboreal carnivore from mainland Africa, and the species is kept in a fairly small number of zoos in Europe and (I think) North America.
1697207077560.png

Northern Luzon giant cloud rat - This would add the largest and among the cutest members of the largest mammal family, the Muridae, which currently has no species in Planet Zoo. This species is larger than a meerkat, is sociable, amenable to living in mixed-species enclosures and is becoming one of the big things in the zoo world currently, with zoos in America, Singapore and especially Europe really getting into keeping these hefty panda-rats.
1697207221880.png

Short-beaked echidna - This Oceanian wonder would add the prime species of Tachyglossidae, the echidna family. Now probably the most widespread unique Australian animal not kept in the game, this species also has the benefit of being extremely unfussy in terms of its habitat - they can live in deserts and dry bushland or tropical forests and high snowy mountain peaks.
1697207153503.png

Victoria crowned pigeon - Among habitat-suitable birds, there are sufficient species to make an entire pack without including a family already in the game (bustards, birds of prey, hornbills, storks, cormorants, waders and waterfowl all fit the brief). But rather than fill an entire pack with ground-living birds, I decided to include just two newbies. I think the Victoria crowned pigeon could add a lot - a tropical Oceanian species, suitable for walkthrough enclosures and that has, certainly in the past, been maintained free-roaming in an outdoor setting. This would add the prime habitat species for the Columbidae, the pigeon family.
1697207426048.png

Walrus - While not a species I am especially clamouring for, the walrus is a charismatic species that represents a completely new family to the game - the Odobenidae. Would also add an aquatic and tundra species to what is otherwise a pretty tropical-heavy pack.
1697207262196.png

Violet land hermit crab - For the exhibit species, I have chosen a representative of an entire subphylum without any representation yet - the crustaceans. This Indonesian species is one of the larger species of terrestrial hermit crab that could work as an exhibit species. They are pretty and characterful among invertebrates, and would almost certainly go down better than many of the other unique options (which, on my list, included things like medicinal leeches, velvet worms and giant mosquitoes). While I am uncertain whether this exact species has been bred in captivity, it is possible to breed and rear to adulthood other land hermit crab species so I would be fine with including them.

Damn actually a really nice roster.

Hmm, I'll give it a go:
  1. Siberian musk deer - they look so weird. Imagine an ungulate with saber teeth. They look like they belong in an Ice Age movie
    629f28697787e00e7d415862.jpg
  2. Shoebill - the machine gun bird. They look like villains
    489140e919301ca50a62272af222a08a.jpg
  3. Great white pelican - it peliCAN, not peliCANT
    640.jpeg
  4. Brazilian tapir - our obligatory clone. Tapirs are certainly unique among animals, and the Brazilian is different than the 2 we currently have. It'd be a nice South American alternative to the Baird's, plus we may get a Malayan tapir update
    BrazilianTapir03.jpg
  5. Walrus - yeah, this is a no brainer
    walrus-tusks_2x3.jpg
  6. Bush dog - our obligatory canid, since we already got our felid. Bush dogs are uniquely shaped and have a semi-aquatic lifestyle that'd be fun to design for
    Bush-dog-Speothos-venaticus.jpg
  7. South American coati - totally different than anything in the game
    Nasenbaer_Nasua_nasua_Zoo_Augsburg-04.jpg
  8. Plumed basilisk (E) - the lizard that can walk on water?! Yes sir, that's certainly unique

Unique Animal Pack? Alright, I’m game:
  • Short-Beaked Echidna - It’s similar to an anteater, has quills, burrows underground, lays eggs, and gives milk through its pores.
  • Pacific Walrus - A giant blubbery pinniped with tusks.
  • Virginia Opossum - North America’s only marsupial.
  • Gerenuk - An antelope that stands on its hind legs to browse.
  • Shoebill - A strange bird with a massive, oddly-shaped bill
  • Slow Loris - One of the only venomous mammals on the planet that also happens to have giant eyes.
  • Aye-Aye - A lemur with a giant extra finger that it uses to look for food. It could even use the Log Forager enrichment that only the sun bears use!
  • Exhibit: Parson’s Chameleon (or some other species) - The first color-changing animal in the game. They can have little color-changing animations!

I'd absolutely buy this

With this next pack, we will explore the unique members of the animal kingdom...
Are you ready to dive in?
OK, maybe not into the frigid waters of our first locale. The wind is biting and there is ice under and all around us...
Oh, look on a neighboring ice chunk!
1697211984075.png

Its the majestic and playful Walrus! This guy is unique in being a large member of pinniped and uses its tusks to move about.
We're freezing so lets head south, far south...
On the tree dotted savannah we spot movement in the distance!
1697211880725.png

Peering through the tall grass is the shy Aardwolf! Unique in being named a wolf, its anteating habits and in actuality, its a Hyena cousin! Wow!.
Heading East, to another warm locale, we find ourselves in a dense jungle...
It will be hard to spot anything here...
We have to be very quiet...
Shhhhhh. there's something under the bushes over there...
1697212288475.png

Oh wow, look! It's a pretty little Chevrotain aka Mousedeer! We've never seen anything like him in all of our adventures! He's called a deer but is unique genetically...
...as he scampers away.
Don't worry, there's more to see above.
1697212446372.png

The elegant and colorful Fruit Doves! Unique looking that's for sure!
Well, good travels.
We saw lots of cool animals... Too bad its time to head home...
Where only backyard animals will be found.
Oh well.
Wait! There she is!
1697212393244.png

Our friendly local Virginia Opossum! Even our own backyards have unique wildlife reminding us, all life is cool!

I’ll give a bit more thinking to my idea. This is for the winter 2024 pack assuming we get spider monkey and Secretary bird and coati until then.

Unique Animal Pack
Divide and conquer the animal kingdom by discovering 8 of the most diverse and amazing animals of the world!

Roseate Spoonbill
1697210151514.jpeg

Coming in as the star of this pack, spoonbills are extremely unique. Their beaks are their main attraction, classically named “spoonbill” for a reason. This specific species of spoonbill is even more unique with its vibrant colourings.

Brown Pelican
1697214483320.jpeg

Birds are the most unique group of animals of the entire world, so including more than one was a no brainer! Pelicans are unlike any sea bird, their throat system and the way they catch their food is truly bizarre!

Gerenuk
1697214739077.jpeg

There’s no way we could have a unique animal roster without the strangest ungulate ever! The Gerenuk is a hybrid of a giraffe and a gazelle, and the outcome is a beautiful ungulate.

Siberian Musk Deer
Untitled design.jpeg

A deer that has fangs?! What is this madness! Musk deers are a very bizarre species of deer. Their fangs are useful actually for them to brawl other males for territory and mating rights.

Japanese Raccoon Dog
1697216134787.jpeg

Another beautiful hybrid animal, is it a raccoon? Is it a dog? Who knows lol. Raccoon Dogs are majestic creatures, combining the curious behaviour of raccoons with the body of a dog!

Northern Luzon Cloud Rat
1697217714686.jpeg

Rats and mice are some of the most underrated animal groups in the world, they are mostly criticized by their presents in cities and sewers, however they are extremely unique. The cloud rat is the perfect example of this.

Bald Uakari
1697220248099.jpeg

We can’t forget about primates! Monkeys specifically are very unique and different from each other, some of which have really bright faces like the Bald Uakari.

Mantis Shrimp (E)
ABE6B3D0-10A5-4A14-B8D5-A38114C5E9D4.jpeg

For our exhibit animal this time we’re dipping below the waters surface to visit one of the most colourful and majestic animals, the mantis shrimp.
