Hardware & Technical XBOX One Elite Controller

Yeah I was well excited it was the first time I've ever got enough money to buy a ship was just playing around the issue was I couldn't get the laser to come up separate from the two attack weapons.

I got the Elite controller when on special offer at Argos around Black Friday.
I use it on the PC for all games, the stick combinations are good but the extra buttons don't really help for ED as they double up what is there already. You can adjust triggers also so works for different types of games and perfect for me as I prefer an arm chair to sit in.

I'm using the Elite controller on XBox One (I got it bundled with a 1TB SHDD console in a deal). Whilst the paddles can't be mapped independently, they can be used to reduce/eliminate the need to move off of the sticks and triggers, which gives a much smoother/faster control experience.

I have the top paddles mapped to A/B, and the bottom paddles to the LB/RB buffer buttons; this allows continuous throttle and flight control without moving my fingers from the sticks and triggers. I also remapped boost to B+RB in ED so I can't hit it by accident but it's always available by hitting both right paddles - again without ever releasing the sticks.

Little tip for those using any type of Xb1 controller on PC, the chatpad attachment acts like a standard keyboard on PC. Meaning most, if not all, of the buttons can be mapped to do whatever you want (unlike on the Xb1 itself). A lot easier than having to take your hands off the controller to hit a key on your separate keyboard. And the chatpad fits on the Elite controller as well, even with the paddles attached.

Ooh, juicy. Might be time to upgrade my 360 pad to an Xbox One controller.

I play this game exclusively with an XB1 Elite Controller. I understand the argument of a HOTAS, but I can't use one of those on the road and more importantly, my back will not tolerate HOTAS over 30 minutes of play.

PM me if you want the optimal key binds. Make sure your right stick is mapped to a joystick setting (hotas stick) and right stick is your yaw / vertical thrust, alt - lateral / vertical.

Map x to the lower left paddle and y to the lower right. Keep the upper paddles as to their corresponding shoulder bumpers.

context controls are a must. Oh, I keep my look on a L3 and keep the look on the left thumb stick.

FD should seriously look at my control settings as they are vastly superior to their context default settings.

I can PVP just fine.

Last, make sure you're using the extended sticks as fidelity is critical with this game.

My HOTAS broke a couple of days ago and have had to resort to using my Xbox Elite controller to get my daily ED fix
I would have given up playing if it wasnt for Voice Attack and foot pedals .... makes playing ED more bearable with a Xbox controller

Anyobody using these for playing ED?

I'm using standard XBOX one wireless controller on my PC machine for ED, but those back paddles would be so OP in ED for latteral trust etc :D

Thinking of upgrading

From your videos I know you love ED with a vengeance.
That is why I was so surprised to hear you say you use these things to play ED, you being a PC gamer.
You even talked about having to buy a good keyboard and mouse to play ED with instead of the the xbox pad, because you wanted better control?
Did I understand that right?

It is like you do not even consider HOTAS for use in ED.
Why is that?
EDIT: I remember now you are used to playing ED on your TV, but when you use a kb/m you will sit in front of you PC anyway I think.

I use a Hotas for controlling my ships and SRV in ED and I think it is magnificent.
It just feels right and everything you need for direct control, button-wise, is on the HOTAS.
Flying Elite ships with a HOTAS is incredibly immersive and I can recommend it to everyone.
Playing a spacesim like ED without a HOTAS is something I can not even begin to consider.

I use the Xbox One Elite controller too. Playing on my couch (ED on the TV) and couldn't really make HOTAS work in that setup.

I think the Elite controller is much, much better than the standard Xbox One controller. Haven't figured out a use for the paddles, and I think they get in the way so I have just removed those. But using the longer "sticks" offers a lot of precision over the standard controller. I'm using the long stick on the left (pitch, roll) and the middle one on the right (yaw, up/down thrust).

I have to say that the D-pad looks less accurate than the default controllers cross-shaped Dpad. I tend to have some issues with the circular Dpad as some games (fumbled multiple HELLDIVERS combos) since it feels less accurate than an actual cross-type pad.

I use this...

It was £27 from Tesco. Lol

It works exactly the same as the Xbox 360 controller I had before (that broke).
Only it lights up for no apparent reason. And it's 2/3 cheaper. Lol

You can now totally remap the Xbone Elite controller to anything you want. Finally map those paddles to something useful like keyboard buttons.

Just tried it and it works. Although I use a HOTAS myself, I just thought that people who felt ripped off by M$ needed to know.

Awesome! Been hanging out for something like this! I tried out the built in Steam controller customisation support recently but found there was no options to map them separately. Finally!

Thanks for sharing.

Edit - I take a little bit of that back .. only Win10 :( ugh!

With the proper bindings, an xbox elite controller can offer full freedom of movement on par with a hotas. (I should know, i use both interchangeably).

A strange thing happened - I was having problems switching from keyboard warrior to Xbox elite, as the right thumb is at 45 degrees, so was difficult to roll without pitching.
I tried the left had stick, which requires a near vertical thumb, and I was landing with flight assist off on my 1st go!
Maybe, after 40 yrs, I've discovered that I'm left handed!

The answer to button shortages is 2 button combos.
I haven't written teh obvious ones, like triggers to fire, or front buttons to scroll left/right, but you get the idea.
