I don't always agree on the "reasons" behind the choice, but the rest is true.
It's fairly obvious to anybody who have played some shooters in the past (or now) that the Odyssey mechanics are all over the place.
See, we have FPS and shooters for a very long time, and they are very popular. It's traditional to keep the core of it and expand on it. Especially when you are not a company specializing in FPS shooter like Fdev.
Instead, Fdev decided to reinvent the concept of shooters. Since they are obviously master of shooter games, thanks to their experience in tycoons, I guess. Meanwhile, they could have used games like Planetside 2, which is very close to what EDO wished to be for the shooter aspect. You have shields, triangle of combat, consumables and a variety of guns. And it's sci fi.
But instead they said "nah" and reinvented the wheels.
We have headshot in games (or weak point) to reward good aiming and skills. We don't in ED for half the opponent HP. It's incredibly bad. No shooter, not even RPG with shooter element like Fallout 3-NV-4 will do without headshots. It's a core part of any shooter.
We have a variety of weapons type in shooters so you always have a tool for the proper engagement, and according to the player "feel". I like SMG for close combat, and LMG for mid range combat. Bob's like shotgun and sniper rifle. Steve is more AR all around. Pro Tom is a 360 no scope sniper guy with a pistol sidearm. Weapons have roles and feel. The whole "switch" thing negate that. Forget using a SMG at close range, that guy have a shield. Forget using a sniper rifle at long range, the projectile takes up to 2 SECONDS travel time. Forget to use an AR at mid range, the guy have either a shield or not (whether you are using a laser or kin AR).
In planetside and games like battlefield, you have combined arms. Air, vehicles and infantry. And they all have ways to deal with each others. Grab C4, nuke a tank. grab a gun kill a dude, grab a locked on rocket launcher destroy a fighter, and so on. Got ganked by a plane and all you have is a gun ? Well, better gotta hide and run.
In EDO, who cares ? Combat triangle is only there because YOU do it, and it's "ship nuke people lol". Rocket launcher that say it's for vehicle is actually more for infantry.
Oh, and the inability to swap modules, and even have them "craft once use forever" is completely wrong in every single aspect. It's so wrong it's like the equivalent of cancer for shooter. Technically it's part of the shooter, but it's mutated cells that are harmful to the organism in general, and the best way to handle it is to destroy it before it spreads.
And finally you have the balance. The moment they announced plasma, I knew they'd rule the game. Switch guns or one gun do it all ? Guess which one is best.

I bought all the plasma guns day one. The AR is trash, the rest is best in slot. Good job Frontier ! Anybody else who played videogames that were not Elite 1984 saw that coming a mile away.
TL,DR : instead of using decades of collective experience from an incredible amount of shooters and RPG with shooter element, ED tried to "reinvent" the concept. There is no shame in copying another game for mechanics and expand upon it.
