Your Cobra MkV Builds

I don't think you need a refinery to get materials you've mined from space rocks (but willing to be corrected). However SRV is much better for collecting materials - just shoot at any outcrops, chondrites, etc., that pop up on your SRV radar.

Unless, of course, your SRV is out of fuel and you're looking for ingredients to make more. 😝
 
Surely, if you were out on a long trip and using the SRV, you'd make sure that you kept the synthesis materials topped up. What else are you going to do with the SRV in deep space?

Honestly, with the ingredients for SRV fuel being some of the most common mat's you can find, you'd probably have to be deliberately ignoring them to run out.
If it did happen, though, (do the ingredients for SRV fuel get used for other synthesis recipes?) a mining laser would get you out of trouble.

Also, another (more plausible) scenario might be that you've used jumponium to get to a system, it turns out the system has no landable planets and you need more jumponium to get back out again.

Also, also, FDev have a habit of getting us to "interact" with things by shooting at them so if it turns out there is something out there that we've yet to find, chances are we're going to need to be able to shoot at it.

In all cases, a mining laser (or, ideally, a mining lance) is probably something it's better to have and not need than need and not have on an exploration ship.

I need help engineering it, as it’s been a long time and engineers have changed. My intent is to make Elite in this ship and design it to be a stealthy little killer.

Sorry, EDSY breaks my brain, but trying to stay with the spirit of your build I would aim for this, or something close. Some of the choices like the D shield booster for the resistance engineered one and some engineering short of grade 5 like long range beams not being maxed (I don't always go max on long range even when there's plenty of power) are out of power concerns, and I don't run frags a lot so maybe others have better ideas for that, but rapid fire with screening shell is there to maximize how many shots you get off when you have your target in range, and corrosive on one of them for the powerful debuff. Reactive surface hull with thermal resist works very will with one HRP to give good resists across the board. Going to beams lets you run thermal vent, and with an armored power plant you'll be running pretty cool too, so I don't see a need for a heat sink (or a point defense, just personal opinion on that) and put in a chaff instead, as I find that more valuable, but entirely up to you on that, of course. KWS are tough on smaller ships, as they are power hungery, so probably stuck with a D on that, and I prefer fast scan, it lowers range as well so whatever scan time decrease works best with the range decrease for the KWS you have the power for is all that's needed there, kind of depends on ship and pilot. You could always go monstored instead of thermal spread on PP if you want some power for something and still be fine on heat with armored. Make sure fuel scoop, interdictor, and vehicle hanger are on last priority, so they are powered off when deploying hardpoints.
 
Revised general purpose. More than capable in hazres sites. Imp Hammer with Feedback Cascade to negate SCB spamming, efficient beams to help strip shields, overcharged multis, one with corrosive, the other oversized - your standard setup. The Cobra has excellent heat management, so the ship barely ever overheats - even when firing from all cylinders. Distributor draw is also quite generous, allowing you to unload everything once targets align; 2.5 pips to weapons and you're golden. High armor resistances give you peace of mind once shields drop (around 1 minute recharge), SCB to delay that from happening. Activating the SCB does not cause the ship to overheat if it's close to its resting heat. 32t cargo for rare trade runs, planetary hangar and discovery scanner for the odd exobiology trip. Note that I'm actually using a Thargoid powered SCO drive, so the actual unladen jump distance is around 36LY.

This is what I've been using for general mission running and power play. Work well enough for me, I'm sure you could swap around some engineering, like overcharged over rapid fire on the MCs but I just like it this way. Decent shields and good armor for a small ship and still jumps decent, if you want more hull or shields swap out the FSD booster and lose some range.

I just realised that my "multirole" CM5 actually has a higher DPS than my daily-driver Mandalay... so I'm building another one as a small combat ship.

I'm thinking overcharged C2 beam & MCs and then a couple of C1 frag-cannons as well.
Finished putting it all together last night but it still needs engineering.

 
So here’s my two:

My multi-role/pirate build Renegade. Currently waiting for PP modules to be unlocked, and I’m definitely considering frags.

My new favourite AX ship Ascension. I’m still switching between 2xC2 with 2xC1 Gauss (matching the damage of the Chief) and 3xC2 Gauss to see which works best for me. I’ve also unlocked some Mod Shards to see how they fare.

Edit: I rejigged Ascension, I found I needed better repair limpets when not being followed by a rescue ship. 😬

Having a multipurpose ship with a 50ly jump range is insane!!! I remember taking a B rated Conda to the core back in 2012 with a 28LY jump range. And back then, that was an amazing jump range.

It is, basically, an exploration build that's been beefed-up a bit and had some guns bolted to it.
It's intended to be a "scout" ship rather than a proper "multirole"... for which I fly a Krait instead.

Finished (mostly) engineering my fighty CM5 and I've noticed something;- I never seem to get into "jousts" while flying it.
Dunno what the stat's are for rate-of-turn but whenever another ship flies straight toward me I can just turn, get behind them and carry on shooting.
The only other ship that flies the same way is my Vulture and, in that, I have to make FA-off turns to get behind an oncoming ship before it starts to turn.
In the CM5 it's... effortless.
Ship attacks you head-on, you see it fly past, turn and you're behind it instantly.
