Your Cobra MkV Builds

My Cobra MK5 for Exploration

this is what im currently running with, you could reduce the weight some more to get a tiny bit more jump range.
But I prefer the way it is now, decent jump range, fun to fly across planets and should have everything needed to go exploring/do exobio.
FSD is the Pre-Engineered (SCO)
The Surface scanner is the Pre-Engineered Detailed Surface Scanner V1
Heatsink Launcher is also the Sirius Heatsink Launcher
and I´m planing to get the Modified Mining Laser in future

If you really wanted get some more range you could swap the shield to a 3D but with the 3C you´re most likely going survive boosting straight into a planet (if that´s not something you´re worried about you could possibly also remove the Shield booster).
The 4D Power Distributor could be swapped to a 2D if im not mistaken but that would mean no more boosting (or rather you´ll have to wait for quite some time until you can boost a second/third time).
Point Defence is not really needed but with 2x 0.08t weight i just figured i might as well fill the open slots.

If there are some other improvements that could be done please let me know. I think I´ve finally got it all worked out but since im still new I´d be happe for some advice/improvements.
Things have changed in this game: I remember when a 34ly ASPX was considered a great long distance explorer! My fully A-rated and combat proven C5 still has 40ly jump range 😜

What's the mining laser for?

If you plan to mine, where are your prospector and collector limpets?

you can use it deep in the black to farm stuff for synthesis if needed (sulfur, phosphorus, etc.). in desperation, without limpets you will have to collect the raw materials the old fashioned cargo scoop method way

Is the Cobra MkV new? Haven't really played a lot and I've been out in the black. I just got my Type 8 (love it) and my Python MkII
Yes, made available for early access in December, it is the fourth new generation ship.

There is also the Manderlay, an explorer, which will probably be available for credits in Odyssey around the end of this month or some time in February.

You know you can mine without either of those things, right?

A more pertinent question might've been to ask where the refinery is.
Since there isn't one, it's fairly obvious that the mining laser is just for harvesting mat's from 'roids... which (like everything else that's floating around in space) can be collected without the use of limpets (or a refinery).

Heatsink -> G5 Lightweight (0.2t).
Sheilds 3C (2.25t, 285mj) -> 3D Enh.LowPow/Hi-Cap (1t, 272mj).

Those 2 should give you about + 0.7Ly
Thanks a lot, I´ll change them right away and edit the link in my post. The Extra ammo from the Sirius Heatsink Launcher isn't needed after all and I only picked the Shield 3C since I didn't think of adding anything but Stripped Down to it but wanted to be able to survive a crashlanding mostly unharmed.

Regarding the comments about the Mining laser from others, I actually never did mining and just copied it from a build that i used as a basis. I´m assuming what Stealthie wrote is exactly what it was used for. I just went with it and figured I´ll just learn about mining when I get to a point where i need some mats out in the black. Which hopefully wont be any time soon since im filling up on everything right now before I head out there.
Lastly, do i actually need a refinery to fill up on mats out there or can i go without one especially since I got a SRV and should be fine just collecting stuff on planets?

If that was the one I posted earlier, which had one of the modified mining lasers, that was for poking NSPs, "just in case" :) (But could also be used for space-based mining and cargo scooping of materials in the event that the SRV was indisposed)
Been a couple days from when i started on it but I´m pretty sure you´re right and that was the one :D (thanks for that btw gave me a good start to work with)

r can i go without one especially since I got a SRV and should be fine just collecting stuff on planets?

I don't think you need a refinery to get materials you've mined from space rocks (but willing to be corrected). However SRV is much better for collecting materials - just shoot at any outcrops, chondrites, etc., that pop up on your SRV radar.

If you’re filling bins before you go - a wise decision - you really don’t need the mining laser at all. When you use some mats, the next time you’re out in your SRV just pop a few outcrops and restock.

And no, you don’t need a refinery for mats.

I did a 60K ly trip and never mined a thing. Materials,few repair limpets and AFMU you already got.
You will be doing a lot of scooping. I mean a lot. Almost every jump ends with it. It's a massive time sink when you add it all up. So, I would go with 5A scoop and 4 for Guardian FSDb.
