Your least enjoyable Elite activity?

Supercruise. It's boring pointing your ship towards a target and waiting until the button prompt pops up. It wouldn't be too bad if some NPC pirates would pop up occasionally to break up the monotony, but most of the time they're MIA. Travel in the old games was similar, but things happened en-route so it didn't become dull.

Edit: He is right that I'm not currently playing though, but that has more to do with my rig dying than anything else. Circumstances being what they are are making replacement shopping less than convenient.

Ouch! While a rig dying is a minor thing compared to other stuff currently going on, i till feel with you. I wish you good luck that it still lasts for a while and you can get the replacement on time.

grinding federation rank!!!
I cannot agree with this enough. I feel like this game has no respect for time invested in a lot of areas, but rep grind is where it really shines. I have never run into a grind this tedious except in MMORPGs where you have a monthly sub fee. Every time I think I've found something to make it more bearable, I find that Devs have closed the loop on it. As a new player coming up on my first month on this game I'm already rotating this game out for something else because of this. I really do love this game, but it's been out for 5 years. Things that were created to hold the initial player bases attention need to be reduced at least.

Just curious, but is this because you expect to have a Corvette/Cutter already, as you have the funds?

Nope, doesn't have to do with the funds. Strictly speaking on the length of time it takes to rank up in the factions. The first 3 or 4 ranks are bearable, but then it basically quintuples in difficulty every rank after that. If I'm turning in missions that are REP+++++ and getting only 1 to 3 percent per mission...yeah, that's a bit much, and I'm still 5 ranks away from Rear Admiral.

So my least enjoyable ED activity - no it's not engineers, I can just ignore them. Not really, but I do and that pits me against bulletsponged enemies in combat. Combat is my least enjoyable activity - I blame the powercreep for that. I used to do a lot of it before they notched up the NPC HP so much, but it simply didn't pay nor yield a fun experience anymore. Ships flying reverse as fast as they can fly / accelerate ahead adds in to the mix. My tolerance for nonsense is actually pretty big, but I just couldn't stomach the combat anymore.
I too dislike "end game" combat, but I still enjoy combat with lower-ranked NPCs and players. To make it challenging, I fly a modestly engineered Eagle, Python, or even my Type-9 and accept lower-ranking assassination missions. I'll also go into a RES and provide support for NPC miners. This isn't just providing combat cover, but repairing them when they get damaged. I like my combat to have "purpose", so I don't farm a RES or Nav beacon unless I'm testing a new build. But to your point, I've lost all interest in CZs. They are not challenging, they are a grind, all thanks to these bullet-sponge ships that all fly like drones rather than human pilots. I actually feel the AI is more realistic and believable for lower-ranking NPCs than it is for the Deadly and Elite NPCs. The sweet spot for me is Novice to Dangerous. Interestingly, this also mirrors my experience with PvP as well. Gankers in godships are just as boring as CZ NPCs.

Yeah, my point is - is it reasonable to expect that getting from Sidewinder to A-rated Corvette/Cutter takes a month or so? Rank grind is currently the only true progress meter here, after all, as credits have more or less lost their meaning.

# Supercruise. That's no gameplay, it's a boring timesink.

# Staring at the same animations for the 1000th time.

# Solomode influencing multiplayer and vice versa.

# Bugs that are around for years.

# Only AX. Abandoned pro-xeno, the only feature was a purchasable stickerpack. Blaze your own trail, my ***.

Rep and ranks are supposed to be long term goals. Enjoy the game, if you don't like grinding don't grind.
It's somewhat ironic that I think I was my happiest after the first month.

I don't think I had any ranks in, but I had some 15 million in the bank from courier/hauling missions, had flown with SW/Adder/T6 and finally Cobra mk3 and occupied myself in the task of cobbling together a B-rated Asp to embark on a long exploration voyage.

You know how it is - always tempting to salt a positive thread, so I thought why not gather some salt separately in a proper container.

So what's yours? Operating the FSS? Outfitting? Hitting "J" all the time? Alt-tabbing?
Exploration, the novelty wears off fast.

Least enjoyable - exploration and passenger hauling

Not very enjoyable - cargo transport

Ok-ish - Thargoids, mining, searching ruins

Favorite - combat, combat community goals (will not do massacre missions for role playing reasons though).
Made Elite with it in no time, and is still my only Elite ranking. Used combat to rank up Federation and Empire, for access to Corvettes, Clippers, etc., greatly enjoyed it.

OMG yes, Guardian sites make want to gouge out my own eyes. I did the FSD Booster and swore i'd never go back. I should've done what you did, both at the same time. Now i'm actually contemplating/ dreading going back for the gauss cannons.
Anything Guardians? (🤪). So terrible. I made myself grind for fsd booster and gauss cannons. Never again.

Least enjoyable Elite activity...hrm...
  • Besides waiting for announcements with concrete information
  • Besides spending more time in forums than the actual game
  • Besides playing NMS and wishing half the stuff it has was in Elite (emphasis on half, not all)

In seriousness...

Two items, actually, because one is self-imposed and one is not...

I despise the grind towards Combat Elite, but desperately desire it as a natural completionist. That said, the stupidity of said grind is incredibly annoying. All the ranks are, really. It's an enormous wasted opportunity for narrative missions between ranks, unique objectives and milestones, or reason to visit famous/important locations throughout the bubble (or beyond, in the case of Exploration). Instead, it's a credit grind easily finished for two of the ranks...and a massive timesink that kills any joy of fighting for Combat. Top that off with the 'efficient route' of mopping up Thargoid Scouts endlessly still taking eons to complete...yeah. Least favorite but self-imposed.

Not self-imposed? Also known as an actual answer to OP?

Fleet management
, which is why I make the NMS joke. It's been made more-or-less clear that Fleet Carriers will be a substantial investment and generally targeted at an end-game crowd. That's unfortunate, because NMS does it the other way around: gives you a powerful fleet management tool early on, before you can even fully take advantage of it...which allows you to grow with it. It also allows me to collect various ships and easily access them with insta-warp to my current system, no fuel needed. So when I get tired of trading for a few days, or decide I'm ready to just blast pirates for an afternoon in my favorite combat ship...

Boom Cool warp-in-effect (of which I'm sure ED will have that, too) and voila...
Fleet Carrier ready to assist me in transitioning play style instantly.

Does it give me a credit advantage? Nope.
Does it fight for me? Sorta, but not effectively in NMS.
Does it look cool but that's about it? Yep.

Does it make playing the game more fun? Absolutely.

Fleet Management in Elite sucks.
  • Pay to taxi ships based on their value and distance? That's dumb. Flat fee by size, thanks. I should be in the ship taxi business...right after the SLF pilot waiting in the lounge while my contractor explores in a DBX so I can collect millions for doing nothing.
  • Can only taxi to where I am? Wait, wait, wait...I'm paying you HOW MUCH and you can't read a damn map!? GO HERE YOU GARBAGE SCOW!
  • Unified module storage? Nope. It's wherever you left it. Heaven forbid you'd have a unified module storage solution. That might make sense.
  • Did the wittle commander accidentally shoot a station while defending it and get instantly transported hundreds of lightyears away to a prison? In your corvette with 17ly range!? That's too bad. It's ok, you can taxi a different ship to your location to help with getting back in a reasonable time. Then taxi your corvette for an ungodly sum, too. Or just suck it up and hyperspace grind. It's not that bad, right?

Fleet Management suuuuuuuuuuuoooooooooookekeks....
It sucks. Bad.

This alone is why I'm excited for Fleet Carriers...and terrified, too. What is the point of a multi-hundred million...or worse...capital ship if it can't resolve the most basic fleet management issue: access. Go the NMS route: free warp to your location, have to fuel it to get that sweet 500ly or more range. Forget 'lore' and 'that doesn't make sense'...it's ED. Little makes sense. A combat corvette designed for 'long range patrols' can't get it up over a Type-9.

Ok, there's my salt OP.

Hmm, cost ended up being far worse than multi-hundred millions.
Oh well.

I still stand by my original post (quoted above): fleet management in Elite sucks.
And unfortunately, even with FC changes, it still will.
Unless I'm filthy rich.

Which, I would be, if I was in the taxi business.
But that's for NPCs only, apparently.
Rich jerks.

I hate having to fly all over the universe to outfit a new ship. It takes longer to get the mods for a conda than it does to earn the credits for a conda and "A" mods. Never heard of Amazon in the 34th century?

SRV scanning missions, the hard ones. The installations are designed like Escher paintings and the SRV handles like a shopping trolley when navigating one.

Never completed one and they pay poorly. Even if they weren't frustrating they'd still be a waste of time.

Combat is my favorite, but it pays out sh**! But I can do combat missions all year long.

Laser mining and passengers are the worse. I'm not saying that because of exploits in either field, but I legitimately hated both since the start. So f***ng Boring!!! The only passenger missions I like are Colonia ones because I can also get some exploring in, but? You make just as much in a single Robigo run, so no worth in a Colonia run. I do enjoy deep core mining.
