Update 14, nowhere near enough.

eeyore eeyore eeyore always used to call me that!
Seriously mate im too old to get wound up by insults.
Can't help it i just love this game, you know as well as i do there is nowt out there even close.
Sometimes its nice to just get behind developers, its all too easy to criticise.

I know man, it's easy, but sometimes it's needed, keeping devs fluffy with compliments only is best way to "rest on your laurels" and end up light years behind.. All it takes is some unknown company showing up with completed product mixing ED + SC features and they're done. There is obviously some love in their work, I can see that, but there are also bad spots and they need work..

Those of us who have been around for the longest time, already know that the limitations to what can be done in game, have plagued Fdev since the start, all the way back at #FX2017, their was talk that every update could potentially break the game, and that the limits of the engine had been reached with the launch of Horizons, just look where we are now though, Now I am NOT a fan of Oddysey at all, but having bought the add on, have realised the potential of it, and now, with this new direction of actually engaging with the Thargoids in what seems to be, many different ways of game play, I see the bigger picture.....

The engine hasn't reached its limit yet. They could implement all kinds of visual bells and whistles. Additional options like ray-tracing, DLSS, FSR, faster load times, higher resolution textures, ship models and meshes would go a long way. ED's biggest issue for massively multiplayer is P2P networking.

There's still a lot of untapped potential (see wish lists of players). If Fdev implements such features then ED will be good for another 5+ years.

Make the scanner tool modable, more than just 1 sample canisters. Would be a great start.
Remove that minimum radius for samples.
Able to pulse scan from the SRV (if that minimum radius has to stay).

And for the love of whatever you believe in: Something interesting to find! We've been having barren planets since Horizon.
Fdev owns the right to dinosaurs, and they even have the assets. Slap some of those in and you have a winner!
So you want to make Exbiology even easier by removing the minumum radius and allowing us to scan via our SRV? That'd make iExobiology less interesting.

After months of scratching my backside looking for things to do in-game, trying to show the game some loyalty, I'm afraid I've come to the conclusion that update 14 hasn't gone in any way towards making ED playable again, it's just a case of "same old, same old". Thargoid combat never rewarded you with anything worthwhile, all you got was money and who needs money? I have billions of credits with nothing to buy with it, so ultimately what's the point?
I was hoping the Frontier was going to provide one, but they've failed miserably and we're expected to wait for future patches to give us something that they might not even have on their agenda.

My friend and I will still keep playing, but at a reduced tempo to reflect the overall disappointment of the release which have to the conclusion that we can sum up update 14 in one word....

it is indeed a bit dissapointing that the devs could not think of something better than agressive Thargoids, what result in more pew pew. Not two factions where there is the possibilituy to negotiate, building and exploring together and fighting the other thargoid faction or something like that. Or another alienrace??
They hyped it for weeks, something is comming. Curious I was. Sigh ... fighting Thargoids....seen it all done it all.
Pitty it would have given the game a boost

I personally don't think having to travel 800m to the next sample (three times) makes it more interesting, but I can live with that.

What does feel a bit annoying to me is the fact that the scanner only holds one sample at a time. Often there are 3 patches of lifeforms far enough apart and they all have 4 different types of biological thingies. Why do I have to run the circle 4 times? 😩

Indeed, that's one of many facepalms in this game. 33rd century with shields, fsd, lazors and exobiologists still work with 1000 years old tech.

I agree about the canisters. That's one change I would be happy with.

But removing the sample distance and allowing us to scan via an SRV wouldn't be a good idea, for me. At the moment there's a bit of a challenge, especially with some of those Osseus that are difficult to find. With an SRV scanner, they'd be a bit easier to find and I'm not sure I'd want that.

Bacterias are worst in this, they often spawn in massive distances, not something you want to walk, and are sometimes nigh invisible (pink bacteria colonia on pink planet? nightmare). My idea is a exo bike with pulse scanner, something lot faster than Scarab. You mostly end up in your ship flying above ground looking anyway.

For Bacteria, I do indeed use my ship but for most others, I jump run instead because I can see the samples in the distance.

The only time I don't use my ship for bacteria is when they're impossible to see, so I have to jump run whilst beeping my sampler. It's a pain and I can understand why having a vehicle would be easier.

You do realize that update 14 is a story update with several elements that will unfold depending on players discoveries, we have only seen the beginning. I mean, seriously, how many hours is U14 available, you think you have seen it all? Hmmm. 6k hours is rookie for me if you judge so quickly, no offense (I have been around some time as well).

And then you have threads of people complaining about Odyssey, saying that Elite is a game fundamentally about flying in space, and that Odyssey has taken away from that so they want more of it.

This game is damned if it does, and damned if it doesn't.
there is truth in that for sure..... however didn't FD say release 14 was about a mechanic which had so far never been done in elite? or something new? either this was over egged by the Devs OR there is more yet to come.?

Fdev did say that they have looked under the hood and worked over the engine, that could be the changes we now see between live and legacy, I think that would qualify as a big change.

From someone relatively new at the game (only about 500 hours), lots of people here just seem grumpy and don't actually know what they want. They seem more upset people enjoy things that they don't.

Still kinda of salty that planets still stay glued to the background when you super cruise, but aside form that I like this update.

I might be wrong, but that was something coming in Spring. (If not, Thargoid Maelstroms sure haven't been seen before, nor have "caustic generators" and the new materials, the Orthrus, and at the moment we're still just scratching the surface since it only dropped 48 hours ago)

The Thargoids taking of Systems is new. It's like an AI and FDev as far as I'm aware don't hand pick the Systems they're going to go for next.

Actually, it would make it bearable.
Ok, leave SOME minimum distance, slash off a 0, and it's fine.

And engineering is meant to make things easier / less grindy.
See Backpack: Add a backpack, now you can carry twice as much, less trips to your SRV.
See weapon upgrade: Less shots needed to kill someone or something.
See FSD upgrade: Less jumps needed to cover a distance.

I'm not against the storyline, of course not. The gameplay is the sore spot of ED. Mechanical type of content is what's missing. I will not be adding any more ideas since I'm sorely dissapointed with community's attitude here (flow of fanbois defending the game's bad designs even when you dare to add a tiny QoL thing that wouldn't even be felt), but suggestion forums are full of them. Space wise - more ships, even pilotable cruisers, legs wise - boarding ships (even if you lock it to cruiser ships), exploring space wrecks, ground wrecks, leaving your ship to do small repairs in space, ground goid fights, imagination runs wild.
Thank you.

I had the same thoughts. New scenarios but the old gameplay. And nothing new for the on-foot gameplay.
