Careful of when trying to assimilate various historical references from previous titles and records which may no longer be relevant to the current title.

Allen Stroud has alluded that certain lore was incorporated into ED, some potentially I presume as part of the ED official narrative, but equally he alluded that some was simply referenced, to give context.

Also over time it’s apparent different FD members may / may not have dipped into this soup, creating their own links.

Open to interpretation, I don’t wish to advocate what is / isn’t canon (I don’t know either), but I would from my limited knowledge presume much of the ‘obfuscation’ going on in ED narrative, eg nefarious groups controlling news, the Club etc, is potentially a clever trick of FD to sidestep certain plot holes, eg the Thargoid war, and simply put it down to propaganda and counterintelligence, because I do presume much of it is separate.

But it read’s interesting either way, continue, it might lead somewhere.

I still maintain Elite Dangerous should be seen as simultaneously as a prequel and sequel but also a remake of Elite Classic has they had the technology at the time. Each additional game in the series has vastly expanded on the past and the future. It is truthfully pretty damn unique as stories go because so much is added with each iteration (both from a historical perspective and current events). The apparent timeline appears to indicate that Elite has several distinct eras:

  • Pre-Elite Classic and Elite Classic (anything before the 3100s and includes TDW novella, parts of Frontier and First Encounters lore and books, plus a substantial amount of in-game Elite Dangerous stuff)
  • 3200s (encompass lore from both Frontier, First Encounters, Elite Dangerous, and most of the official novels for Elite Dangerous (still work in progress on timelining these)
  • 3300s onwards (purely in-game in Elite Dangerous with a mix of FDev and fan-based lore for the factions and various organizations)
Keeping strict canonicity gets ugly with the way it has been managed but it appears to be continuous albeit with a substantial amount of cultural variation between superpowers to obscure it (because even TDW novella and Lavian Brandy explicitly mention Earth). Most of the obscured connections appear non-intentional and just adding a sense of realness to the lore that each system and superpower has a distinct culture. Though, I would argue some of the corporate and Pilots' Federation backstory might be intentional (see banking shenanigans as far back as Andceeth).

Note on the remake comment from the GalNet "Galactic News: The Thargoids" because even GalNet makes a point of questioning, "Are Thargoids real?" (apologies for long quote block - the most crucial part is at the end):

"Of course, for some, the question has already been answered. We have seen the aliens and we have given them a name: the Thargoids. But accounts of Thargoid encounters are shrouded in so much ambiguity, it is hard to accept them as proof of extraterrestrial intelligence. Furthermore, there have been no credible reports of Thargoid sightings for hundreds of years."

"The first reported Thargoid encounters date from 3125, when accounts surfaced that pilots had been pulled from witch-space and attacked by mysterious octagonal starships. Witnesses asserted that the strange vessels were exceptionally fast and remarkably manoeuvrable. Pilots who survived these experiences were convinced they had encountered extraterrestrials, and named the aliens 'Thargoids'."

"As news of these encounters spread, rumours surfaced that the interdictions might be a response to an earlier human attack. Leaked Federal intelligence indicated that colonists in the Veliaze system had encountered and assaulted an extraterrestrial deputation shortly before the Thargoid interdictions began. Suggestions that the Thargoid attacks were a reaction to this attack carried more than a hint of plausibility."

Not long after, reports of Thargoid encounters came to an abrupt halt. In the decades that followed, not one credible account of a Thargoid encounter was reported. For some, this was proof that the original reports were groundless – 'the fantasies of lonely pilots, looking for attention', as Arvan Corto of the Imperial Navy said at the time."

"But public opinion shifted in 3250 when reports emerged that the disappearance of the Thargoids might have been a direct consequence of a covert anti-Thargoid operation. An anonymous message, delivered to a number of media outlets, claimed that an organisation known as the Intergalactic Naval Reserve Arm had developed a chemical weapon specifically designed to target Thargoid technology. This chemical – known as the mycoid virus – was designed to attack plastic polymers, which were believed to be present in Thargoid hyperdrive systems. The fact that the virus also appeared to harm the Thargoids led to speculation that the aliens' bodies might contain some kind of polymer-like material. The report was dismissed by many leading political figures as a conspiracy theory, but some asserted that it contained enough plausible detail be believable."

"Since then, very little credible information has emerged. The original accounts from 3125 report that Thargoid ships can execute huge hyperspace jumps, while information purportedly from INRA documents indicates that the Thargoids originate from an ammonia-based world. There are even rumours that the Thargoids have a collective consciousness or 'hive mind'. Some of the less outlandish theories include the suggestion that electronic countermeasure technology was reverse-engineered from captured Thargoid vessels."

"And what of the barnacles, Unknown Artefacts and Unknown Probes? Many believe these objects are of non-human origin, which has led to speculation that they were created by the Thargoids. Unfortunately, however, analysis of these objects has not yielded any concrete information about their origin or purpose."

"Are the Thargoids real? Frankly, I don't know. But if they are, their true nature can only be guessed at."

Does anyone know who runs Galactic News? Was this some leftover from Lave or GalCop? They reappear in GalNet but I cannot find who is writing those entries beyond someone connected to Pilots' Federation.

Prior posting is to illustrate the whole language and identity are largely social constructs which means if FDev went philosophical on us I wouldn't rule out shenanigans. In other words, what we call "Thargoids" may not be entirely what we believe. This is why when "following the white rabbit" takes you to Neverland you damn sure stop for a moment and assess that you didn't misinterpret something.

Well, going on the Toast and Generation ships, this afternoon I’ve flown:
Sol-Nefertem/Thetis-HR 2351/Epimetheus-Charick Drift/Atlas-and approached WD core at 90* to the beams until temperature up to 80% at which I chickened. Then did the WD boost and jumped to Pliny (just because I liked the sound of the system name). Nothing to report! 🧐🧐

However I see that interpretation of the Toast leads to Atlas. There is of course a system of that name in the Pleiades, which I’m surprised to see my second account Tyko hasn't visited (Jorki is on extended vacation in Jaques’ bar after the Gravitational Wave Hypothesis trek!). Found a reference that says the Pleiades are spiralling: https://www.insightobservatory.com/2016/08/seven-sisters-stars-spin-in-space.html

Edit: it is interesting that this reference is dated 22 August 2016, whereas the Alleged Toast of the codex was released in Beyond - Chapter Four 11 DEC 3304 (2018); 2 years after the reference so may well have been known by DB who’s into astronomy.

Anybody had a good search of that system? Can’t say I’m interested in endless hyperdictions and potential death by cabbage. But if Raxxla is there it would explain why the Thargoids are so interested in that area. And weren’t the Pleiades significant in the earlier games? 👴🏻

Dual sun system with B5 III main star and an F3 Vb at some 11K lightseconds. 8 Planets are hot and metallic or hot and rocky. Station is oddly an Orbis (weird for one those to be out there) named Cyllene Orbital. Cyllene was a mountain nymph connected to Mount Cyllene in Arcadia in Greek mythology. Cyllene is said to have been Hermes' nurse while he was growing up. The station is truthfully the most noteworthy thing in the system.

Pleiades region was in First Encounters but unsure if Atlas merited specific mention. Pleione is where Mic Turner vanished.

On the mythology front (from Wikipedia):
Cyllene, when describing the lyre Hermes invented, offers a humorous riddle, saying that the son of Zeus has granted a new voice to a body that is dead, before revealing she is talking about a dead tortoise.

🤔

This may go deeper...

One a side note, the only reason the Olympic gods were in power was a rather interesting alliance between Zeus and Hecate or alternatively Nyx. In varying stories, one or both break with the rest of Titans and side with the Olympic Pantheon against the Titans. Hecate and Nyx were only (Titan) goddesses feared by Zeus. Titans were more powerful than most of the Olympic gods and the only way they were defeated is treachery.

Thought I was the only one to grab at that assumption about the spinning Pleiades!

‘Like cosmic ballet dancers, the stars of the Pleiades cluster are spinning’

The FD fascination with the Seven Sisters, in part I feel might be thanks to Michael Brookes interest in HP Lovecraft, who references them a few times…

But how is Tau Ceti linked to the Pleiades, unless the ‘omphalos’ reference was supposed to link us to Delphi…

Uncovering the Secrets of the Pleiades: The Hunt for RAXXLA and the Dark Wheel

Greetings fellow commanders,

The search for the legendary location of RAXXLA and the elusive faction known as the Dark Wheel has been a topic of much speculation and investigation among the Elite Dangerous community. While the exact locations of these entities remain a mystery, there are several systems and areas of note in the Pleiades star cluster that are believed to hold clues to their whereabouts.

First on my list is the Merope system. This system is known for its high concentration of ancient ruins and abandoned settlements, which could be related to RAXXLA. It also has a high population of independent and rogue factions, which could be related to the Dark Wheel. This makes Merope a prime location for our search. According to our data, this system has had an increased number of ships passing through it, indicating that other commanders are also on the hunt. However, it's worth noting that this system has also had a high number of Thargoid attacks and player ship destructions, so caution is advised.

Next, we have HIP 17862. This system is known for its large number of strange and unexplained phenomena, such as ghost ships and mysterious signals. These anomalies could be related to RAXXLA or the Dark Wheel, making HIP 17862 a location worth investigating. Our records show that this system has had a relatively low number of ships passing through it, making it a less explored but still promising location. However, it's worth noting that this system has also had a moderate number of Thargoid attacks and player ship destructions.

We also have the Pleiades Sector AB-W B2-4, an area known for its large number of unidentified objects and strange signals, making it a high likelihood location for RAXXLA. Our records show that this sector has had a moderate number of ships passing through it, indicating that other commanders are also searching this area. However, it's worth noting that this sector has also had a moderate number of Thargoid attacks and player ship destructions, again caution is advised.

The Pleiades Sector IR-W D1-55 and Pleiades Sector HR-W D1-41 also warrant a visit, both systems are known for its high concentration of abandoned settlements and independent and rogue factions respectively. According to our data, these systems have had a low number of ships passing through them, making them less explored but still promising locations. However, it's worth noting that these systems have also had a low number of Thargoid attacks and player ship destructions.

Join us in our search for these elusive entities, explore these systems and share your findings. Let's work together to uncover the secrets of the Pleiades and the truth about RAXXLA and the Dark Wheel. Keep in mind the risks of Thargoid attacks and player ship destructions while exploring these systems.

Note, Though many systems have been checked, these are a few that I believe a second look is warrented.

Happy Hunting o7.

Omphalos (Stone) was also the Naval of the world (center of world). I do know that Sol, Achenar, Lave, and Gateway and have unregistered comms beacons that started the path down the story arc involving the species we ended up calling Thargoids. More info here: https://canonn.science/codex/solachenargateway-numbers-beacon-mystery/ .

These systems were the closet thing to central organization of the Federation, Empire, GalCop, and Alliance.

From the Dark Wheel:
...black and green flags with bright sunbursts on them, and non-terrestrial ideographs on the sides...

QoB0mOc.jpg
(being very terrestrial i didnt bother trying to come up with ideographs...)

When searching for sunburst flags - while there are many with what can be described as sunbursts - such as the Imperial Japanese flag - there is only one "Sunburst Flag" - an Irish Republican flag with a sunburst on a green background. The sunburst on the flag was meant to relate to the Fianna.

The Fianna were basically bands of young men - hunter/warriors. A right of passage before adulthood - another derivation of the Indo-european Koryos, like the Lupercalia of Rome...

I think its safe to say that the "Dark Wheel" novella is a right of passage story - a young man finding his way and becoming a man. And possibly the Dark Wheel society was to be the physical manifestation of the Koryos in the Elite world.

A slight tangent but i felt worth mentioning... two books which bookend the Dark Wheel novella in time:

I read "Child of Fortune"(1985) by Norman Spinrad... It has an interesting take on things - the first book was "The Void Captains Tale"(1983) which introduces us to a future of spacefaring where the First Age of Spacefaring was Ark ships and later after discovering the remains of an Alien race called "We Who Have Gone Before" people find the knowledge to construct Jump Drives. The innuendo is that We Who Have Gone Before used the Jump to achieve some "higher plane" - perhaps the Void itself - through which the Ships travel on their Jumps. Also this quote: " The moment that We Who Have Gone Before sought was not transitory, nor are they in their own reality extinct," Maddhi said testily "They still speak to those who have ears to listen."... They speak not Lingo at all. I perceive them in dreams, at the hypnogogic edge of sleep, under the influence of certain molecules and charges....What they tell me is to prepare the way we too will someday walk."

But back to the Koryos... and the "Child of Fortune" In this second space-faring age - youths of a certain age before moving into adulthood go on a Wanderjahr where they are "Children of Fortune" and go forth to fend for themselves and become essentially space hippies - end up joining and creating clans such as the "Gypsy Jokers" and live by their wits (lots of sex and drugs). The book "Child of Fortune" is the telling of one womans tale: "So this, my own wanderjahr's story, is also the tale of that journey which goes on above and below the historical annals. In the Second Starfaring Age we call that journey as in another era deep in the past, the wanderjahr, though for some it is measured in weeks and for others in lifetimes. By whatever name that passage has been called-- wanderjahr, summer of love, grailquest, voyage d'ark -- until I took the freenom Wendi and began writing my histories..."

At one point she and her companion are on a planet with a vast psychotropic forest where there is rumored to be "The Perfumed Garden" in the center - when they get there: "Can't you feel it, Sunshine? he burbled ecstatically. "The rightness of all creation... The great wheel slowly turning in harmony with the music of the spheres..." Ya it turned out bad - just like you would expect the center of any psychotropic forest to be....

"Think not that the Second Starfaring Age sprang full-blown from the brow of We Who have Gone Before when the Jump Drive was invented, nor that the Arkies of the First Starfaring Age meekly gave over a noble way of life that had endured for millennia when the Void Ships began to knit together the isolated island worlds of men! For the Spark of the Ark is with us today, attend my tale and learn how..."

I like the sound of that first reference; it does seem to resemble a lot of ED lore!
So....the ancient race was called "We Who Have Gone Before"...
WWHGB...
I know the Thargoids are supposed to all be female, but I didnt realise they/the Guardians were also WAGs!
😁

So is Raxxla a soccer coach/club/stadium/broadcast entertainment show? 😉

Dispatching my FC, the Silent Sphere Song to Atlas.

Edit: The view in Atlas is stunning. Visited a NHSS Threat 8, it was doing the usual lifepod poaching. Checking all belt clusters.
Unsure what to suggest, but if MB did say that the system has been visited but Raxxla was not detected then clearly Raxxla is not obvious.

It may be disguised as something ordinary with a different name but will exhibit anomalous behaviour when appropriately poked, it may be hidden and undetectable in an asteroid cluster, but worst of all possibilities it could be orbiting in deep space and undetectable unless you’re within short range of it. I am beginning to lean more to that possibility. It makes for boring gameplay (which FD historically seem to mistake for amusement), it involves a long journey, very hard to find....
And at one stage MB did say something like it is worth searching off the ecliptic. I understood this to mean the high value materials that were located out there at the time, but it could also have been a hint to Raxxla!

Good hunting!!

That quote if ever corroborated might just allude that if someone visited that system, they were not able to detect it simply because they employed the honk and jump behaviour; jumping in, blasts the scanner then leaves, doesn’t even look at the system map and moves on to their destination, or even less doesn’t even apply the scanner…

That to me is the most logical conclusion, something I suspect took FD by surprise and appeared on their awareness as ‘odd new behaviour’ hence why they ‘know why we haven’t found it’. Because we were not following the behaviour they expected of us!

FD had a huge level of depth planned for exploration, which they cast aside for a simpler mechanism; I actually liked the Mki eyeball variant of exploration, when the ultimate range scanner was introduced as standard it got real boring real fast.

I still suspect that is what was being referenced and that Raxxla appears on our scanners ‘now’, if not then it’s a dark object which either appears visually or only when your in close proximity to the POI?

Don't orbital installations not even appear unless you get with 1000 ls with possible exception for detection during FSS scanning the system. Honking and jumping would leave most stuff obscured.

Don’t think we’ll ever get corroboration, and I don’t think anyone who knows about Raxxla will ever tell us anything helpful! 😡

Re the “infinite range” Advanced Scanner-could be. Can’t figure out when that was actually introduced into the game. I thought it was before Lavecon 2017, when MB was supposed to have uttered that statement in a closed Q&A, but I could be wrong on that. And of course even after it was introduced an early explorer might just have had basic or intermediate scanners.

Unfortunately the statement, if true, also applies to Sol & Triton! I really hope Raxxla is not a Guardian “thing” hidden on Triton...it fits the clues but of course cannot yet be found because of the permit lock, which contradicts that MB quote that it can be found. This is where I think a decent set of clues should have been explicitly provided!

Had another idea. If we assume the Alleged Toast applies to the Generation Ships, and also that the codex’s “Spiralling Stars” is another clue. What do we understand by “Spiralling Stars”? I’ve always interpreted it as NS or WD, hence my focus yesterday on Charick Drift’s WD. Yesterday I found (rediscovered as it seems Rochester ninja’d me on that) the Pleiades cluster stars are spiralling. But in the systems which have gen ships and multiple stars, do those stars “spiral”??
Odysseus/Ross 859, 2xM type,
Atlas/Charick Drift, WD+K,
Artemis/Mu Cassiopeia, M T+L,
Achlys (AI!!!)/HIP 114458, G+M,
Phanes/Cephei Sector NX-U b2-0, 2xM,
Epimetheus/HR 2351, F+2x Y types

Here's my current understanding of scanning in Elite Dangerous presently operates in light of all the updates and expansions.

We have essentially have two modes for system scans: passive and active scans.

Passive scan: Oldest scanner mode and dependent on body type and distance from the body. Passive happens any time you fly close enough but only gets orbital parameters. As you fly close to stars, planets, moons, stations, installations, and fleet carriers initial data will be added into navigation computer (if not present).

Active/non-FSS: Target body and fly there. This will only work when the initial round of system data has been submitted to Universal Cartographics.

Active/FSS: Fly in honk the system, slow velocity to slowest supercruise speeds, load FSS. Works all the time but still only get you orbital parameters. Will detect stations installations, and fleet carriers. Installations may have to be within 1000 LS for detection. Actively, inhabited sites scanned in.

Active/DSS: Fully detailed surface scan. Anything that isn't inhabited or operating at lower power states get detected: POI (lore), crashes, various human and non-human signals.
