Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

This is one of the points of the narrative - an almost indestructible shield against any criticism. "They are working on it".
Just LOL. "narrative" ? Of course it's a "shield against stupid criticism", it's an active alpha ! They are working on it.
There is no persistent state ? Yes we know, they are working in it. There is no second system ? Yes we know, they are working on it. There is only 50 players by server ? Yes we know, they are working on it. There is no salvaging ? Yes we know, they are working on it. Etc.
You can twist your description in every sense, SC is still an alpha in heavy developement and CIG is working on it !!! What you play now is not what you'll play in the next patch and in the other patch...

I dont know man. Assuming the number is correct, those hours seem to be still quite low compared to many decent games out there I am afraid. Unless my maths are wrong, that would be equivalent to around avg 3500-4000 concurrent players per hour. Roughly around a 3rd or half the hourly concurrency for Space Engineers, No Mans Sky or even Elite (estimated Steam, Frontier, Epic and consoles). Or, given Chris Roberts propensity to compare SC to Rock Star games, and to put things in perspective, 30 times less than GTAV or 10 times less than RDR2. Even FDEV´s Planet Zoo is probably played more hours than SC. The mediocre SC hours make sense when one considers how broken it is.
Lol "mediocre"...
These numbers are great for an alpha with bugs and, more importantly, occasional wipes.
The day CIG announces they won't do wipes, I know many of my friends will play 2x or 3x more (myself included).
And those numbers are greatly increasing year after year (average playtime per day per person was 48 minutes in 2017, 64 minutes in 2018, 2 hours in 2019, 3 hours in 2022).

Just wait for the effect of PES in 3.18 with a next wipe probably not before 2024, you will see how the numbers of played hours will increase in 2023.

It is actually the other way round. Given its alleged popularity and record breaking dev time/cost the SC hours played number is mediocre precisely because it is so fundamentally broken and has orders of magnitude more (and more game breaking) bugs than most games. Here a fairly recent fair assessment of the current state:

Standing around on a train that may or may not take me to my destination, collapse through the world, launch itself into space, disappear entirely, duplicate itself or simply kill me for no apparent reason - aaah that’s what Space Games are all about!

I wish they’d introduce ticket inspectors though. Ticket Inspector gameplay is sorely needed in a Space Game like this, we could get all sorts of emergent gameplay evolving from chasing fare dodgers and feel all important and righteous handing out fines to those too poor to buy passage.

Sorry I'm confused: we're almost in march, it seems they unsuccessfully hotfix - even over the weekend - to make trains and elevators work since 2 weeks at least and to get their 3.18 out for real, version that was originally planned for late 2022? Really?

I'm sure this all seems such a reasonable view to hold. It's depressing, to me at least.

What CIG have done and continue to do is not reasonable. Profitable, sure. Because those who want the unreachable unattainable game will pay to wait.

Here is the single core question that should make you question SC.

WHY are those things not there?

WHY is there no persistence, or second (or third) system, or salvaging, or sandworms, or working trains (why are there even trains at all?). The answer isn't "It's an alpha!", the answer is about mismanagement, incompetence, deception, because people keep giving them money to fail.

Also, it's not an alpha.

Foul doubter! This is the finest AAAA^A alpha the world has never seen!

Can you imagine just how good the Morrow Tour, mess hall scene, procedurally generated eggs, Barista tech, Miles’ jackets and bedsheet deformation must be by now?

You’ll have never seen anything like it, and will immediately want to buy an Idris once you do!

But most of the things I cited are there my dear.
Persistence is in 3.18, salvaging in 3.18, more than 50 players already there (100 now), second system not there but in good shape.
You see ? You refute progress but progress are made, like it or not. Remember here when some of you said that the 100 players cap will only be temporary because CIG will never be able to keep it ?
An alpha without bugs, is called release or fake beta, not alpha. And for the 'why so long' because SC alpha is one of the most complex game in development today, they had to build the company and some errors were made in the past (because no one is perfect). Complex games need time and long alpha. That's exactly why ED has no ship interior after 10 years, because it's too complex and no classic company can afford long alpha.

Something that is released broken, such as PES, basic physics and many other SC features, can not be counted as "being there" or as "progress" I am afraid, it is just crappy and broken. Claiming something fundamentally broken "is there" or that it is "progress" is like claiming that the Theranos Edison used for the Walgreen stores tests could actually test blood. Here some random accounts of SC brokenness.

About a week ago -after being fed up with the absence of 3.18- I decided to hop back onto Elite Dangerous. (I stopped playing at the end of 2021 after being fed up with the mishandling of Odyssey) I can't figure out how I ever thought SC was better. The flight model felt more fun and more forgiving l, there was actual gameplay, i didnt crash or 30k every hour, I didn't die to random bugs, I got ganked and actually had a chance of survival against a meta ship. Now i'm not saying Elite Dangerous is perfect. Cause it's absolutely not. But it's about 99,999,999,999 star systems ahead of SC ahead of star citizen. Now i just gotta figure out how to get my refund.

I did the same thing, Odyssey was so busted and I decided I had to try SC. I also recently hopped right on back to Elite Dangerous. FDev really did some good work fixing odyssey and the attention to detail with the entire atmosphere in stations and fleet carriers. The NPCs also have conversations that is relevant to the game and may give some neat insight to the lore of Elite. Not to mention the atmospheric background chatter and NPCs that walk around like they actually have a place to be then stop to talk with another NPC. The Engineering grind is the main thing that I absolutely hate about Elite Dangerous's design choice, but even with that tremendous issue, Elite Dangerous will always be the far better space game for me.

Stay true, only five more years to go!

Then the Reclaimer elevators will work, and they can start on Salvage Tier 1....
