Fall DLC 2023 Speculation

Mole Rats surely only work in the normal exhibits. I would find them cool, too. And I am lucky that my Home Zoo at Stuttgart, Germany, do have them since 2 or 3 years 🙂.
Yeah i was talking about the exhibits in general. Im near Osnabrück where they have them in the Unterirdischer Zoo (Underground Zoo) besides lots off differnet small burrowing mammals and bats that you can observe in their burrows and tunnels. Such a cool concept that i tried to recreate i PZ, but we dont have any animals to put there besides the bats and prairie dogs :( :D

I can give up hope on cetaceans or sharks, but Manatees are the one aquatic animal which I will continue to hope for. We had the same doubts for deep diving, burrowing, brachiation and flying, but we got it all in the end.
But it would be the only fully aquatic animal they'd put in the game. I can't see them developing the entire feature to only use on a single species, too much work for not enough usage.

That being said, considering the CEO of Frontier has a degree in zoology I believe Planet Zoo is very much a passion project for him (zoology isn't exactly a get-rich-quick field, it's not something you get into unless you have a real passion for animals) and he's likely absolutely tickled that it's been so successful. I fully expect that we'll get a PlanetOcean (or some similarly named game) at some point after development for PZ is done.

In contrast to free flying the general mechanics for fully aquatic animals are already within the game as you can see because of the bulk of fully aquatic mods. The only Problem which has to be solved is the unboxing which still needs a short period on land for the animal

I’ve posted this before so I’ll post it again - here is my ideal children’s zoo/ farm pack: First if it is a scenery pack
  1. Dwarf Goat species
  2. Squirrel Monkey
  3. African spurred tortoise
  4. Mallard Duck/ Mandarin Duck/ Wood Duck/ Ducks!!!!
  5. Walkthrough: budgies
Bonus 3 animals if it is a surprise animal pack:
  1. Patagonian Mara
  2. Domestic Chickens (various color morphs and breeds)
  3. A domestic cow species? Maybe a highland cow, zebu, or watusi cattle
Some people might not like the idea of a pack with domestic animals, but I like to build realistic zoos and I do not have enough farm animals. Most zoos have a farm section. Also this pack would be perfect for introducing our first interactive bird in the walkthrough exhibit, or possibly new habitat birds in waterfowl.
Ngl I really dig something like this (because of the African spurred tortoise). It also would make sense to have macaws in a pack that focuses on guests interacting with zoo animals.
Maybe change the goat for a more interesting animal like the yak and you get a pretty solid 4 animal pack. As additional three maybe a rabbit rather than the mara and guineafowl instead of chickens.

I have a general question: People keep posting the squirrel monkeys in children's zoo pack. Is there something wrong with the squirrel monkeys we have in german zoos? They bite. Like regularly, when touched. Not suitable for a kids area. We do have some walkthrough exhibits with them, but usually with staff to monitor everyone keeps their distance.
Most zoos don't do walkthroughs with them and even have an extra guest barrier, to keep kids from sticking their fingers through the fence.

Here in the UK we have a lot of Walkthrough Habitats with Squirrel Monkeys, but as you said, there’s always a keeper in there monitoring. I think that Children’s Zoos don’t allow you to pet EVERY animal they have - for example, pigs and cows can be extremely dangerous, but they’re always in Children’s Zoos. Meerkats bite and are very aggressive, but are always in Children’s Zoos too. Porcupines and Skunks can deal some pretty day-ruining damage, and… you get the picture. I don’t think an animal necessarily has to be able to be PET to be in a Children’s Zoo. It just has to be small, easy to keep and common. The ‘petting’ thing is just an added bonus, and species like the squirrel monkey are what set Children’s Zoos apart from Petting Zoos.

I see. Then the concept of children's zoo is what's new to me. We do have only a few zoos aiming just at kids here in germany, and some of them usually have a petting area. I assumed children's zoo means kids can just interact with every species.
What you describe would fall under "Wildpark" here, or "Tierpark". Usually easy to keep and smaller animals - but it isn't usually aimed for kids specifically here.

Usually the "children's zoo" is a section within the main zoo, showcasing small or "cute" species that excite kids. Often a petting zoo is folded into this as well, or a general barnyard, but a lot of zoos keep animals like monkeys, capybara, spiders, frogs, and so on in the "children's zoo" because they excite kids more than, say, an addax would, and aren't as iconic as lions and tigers which tend to "headline" their own sections.

Children's zoo is just a "Streichelzoo" in german.

So the Bronx Zoo in New York City is one of the larger zoos here in the US. They keep squirrel monkeys in the children’s section. You are right, it isn’t 100% safe to let children interact with them. But they are a staple of children’s zoos for being a highly active species of monkey that children find engaging. The Bronx Zoo also has a more traditional barn and farm in their children’s zoo.

That's a weird concept for me, to decide what excites children more... I mean, I get that children are more excited by tactile expiriences, but other than that it feels a litte superficial. I was definately never interested in spiders and frogs :D
Children's zoo is just a "Streichelzoo" in german.
No, obviously it's not, as people before you explained already. It was my misconception as well, but as you can read for yourself, it's not identical. And don't worry, my english is good enough to not need a simple translation.

Yeah, I think it's just a case of "these animals are (superficially) weird, and young kids like things that are weird."

Chameleons are another animal that often appear in children's zoos. A lot of it is a just a case of animals that might be familiar in cartoons/animated movies/children's media. Colourful, active, 'atypical'-looking creatures.

WALRUS! We want the walrus in the game!
