The whole dogs vs cats thing, even becoming a bitter rivalry in Planet Zoo🤪

Kidding. But seriously, y'all, it can go both ways. There are many cats that could add something different into the game, like the Pallas's cat, the ocelot, the jaguarundi, even a North American lynx, such as the Canadian lynx or the bobcat.

About dogs, same thing. While coyote is typically rejected, it'd actually be nice to represent North American deserts. Bush dog is completely unique, as is the Japanese raccoon dog. I mean, even the South American zorros would be their own thing

However, I'd like to add that I'd prefer anything that isn't a dog or a cat (unless we get a gray fox, bush dog, or Japanese raccoon dog). If we're to get carnivorans, let's get something else. The remaining 3 bears, a mongoose, civets, genets, more raccoon relatives.

About other mammals, I'd love some pigs. A wild boar, a peccary of some kind. And of course, a blackbuck, as the sole Asian antelope (as far as I remember)

EDIT: meant to edit the above comment with this😅

I could literally say the same thing about the canid roster... Larger species~wolf/wild dog. And... important is highly subjective. To me, the bat-eared fox is just as important as the serval since its represented in many zoos and it can't be substituted with anything in game. The serval even has its niche covered partly by the caracal imo.
I also view the bat-eared fox and serval as equals honestly. I tried to count the number of big cats vs small cats and such but it's quite arbitrary at what counts as big vs small.

Can we just stop dragging the canid/felid discussion into every single thread? Make a new thread for it but im honestly quite sick of reading the same back and fourth in every single thread that isnt hyper specific on something else.
Do we have a lot of cats and canids? Yes
Will we get more of them? Yes
Is it understandable that people are getting sick of them? Yes
Are there still cool cats and dogs out there? Yes
Does this whole discussion belong into every single thread? No

Its allways just the same few things back and for and never leads to anything besides derailing threads.
Yes i know that the bushdog would be cool and yes it would be but with the coati and new world primates in general missing its really no priority for south american reps.
I also know that we only now are getting actual small cats and that while the larger cats are quite overflowing (we literally got every panthera species) the smaller cats add their own unique gameplay opportunitys and shouldnt be overlooked just cause we got 4 large spotted cats in the game, 3 of them having leopard in the name.
But in the end we also dont have any species of waterfowl, allmost no birds and reptiles in general, only the bare minimum if even of domestics, australia is still a massive content drought and really the game just has bigger blind spots then the fact that we "only" have 3 small cats (i know cheetah and cougar are taxonomically small cats but im quite sure people mostly mean the small part more literally). We got a wolf for every continent and a fox for every continent besides south america as well as all canid relevant biomes.
Meanwhile we got 1 new world primate, 2 with tails, no waterfowl at all and only 9 habitat animals for australia if we dont count invasives and even then its only 12. We got 11 cats.
When people are asking for underrepresented, no matter how many percent of any genus we got, if we got more of them or as many as we got animals for an entire incredibly unique continent, thats not underrepresented thats very much the opposite

You may be kidding, but it's actually true to an extent - though not a rivalry or bitterness. Just from looking at posts from recent times, this is kind of a quick rundown based on the number of posts about both groups. This doesn't take into account that some people may have many posts about it, so it's not necessarily the number of members posting. Noting that when I say "dogs" below i'm including foxes in that too.

some people want more cats but no more dogs
some people want no more cats or dogs
Some people want more of both cats and dogs,
Some people want more of dogs but no more cats (this is the group I'm in actually).

I think the idea behind it is that the cats are visually more distinct than the dogs and that they're divided into the smaller and the larger cats, the latter of which is generally agreed for the most part that we don't need anymore of those. Personally I think there's still some visually distinct dogs as well - the Bush Dog, Bat Eared Fox, and the Racoon Dog.

Totally agree. And to be honest, it doesn't matter how many animals we get, every continent/area/biome is gonna feel incomplete. Realistically, it'll feel incomplete. I don't like to think about it (because I'm a completionist😅), but "you can't always get what you want"

And the gray fox, too🤪

Wanted to bring up this thread again because its buried real far back and I really like this thread. So, I wanted to pose a question to people. The general consensus for september/October pack is a temperate pack.

Because of this what species do you think from the temperate theme could be added to hep groups with a currently low diversity?
If you'd like to open a thread specifically about a pack for the next update you can do so. It derails the original topic of the person who opened the thread.

I've deleted a few posts after mine. If someone can please open a new thread on this new topic as it highjacks the original topic.
Any posts that quotes someone who had an off-topic post will be removed.

Happy Oceania Pack everyone!!!

What are your thoughts on the following groups:
  • Ratites - kiwi
  • Penguins - little blue penguin
  • Dasyuromorphs (marsupial carnivores) - Tasmanian devil
  • Macropods - Quokka
  • Bats - spectacled flying fox
Also, what are your opinions on the state of masupials as a whole in the game?

I need the Thylacine and I'm happy

  • ratites are solid, but wouldn't mind the rhea
  • I'm done with penguins but wouldn't be upset if had to get one more
  • would still like one more carnivores marsupial such as a quoll or Numbat bit not essential
  • macropods still definitley needs the tree kangaroo
  • the flying fox filled all my bat needs

Need rhea for ratites
Need either rockhopper or gentoo for pengus
Need brushtail possum fir marsupials in general
Need a grey kangaroo for macropods
I wouldn’t get mad if we have a third bat

Ratites - Got most of what I want, but a rhea would still be nice for those who need it
Penguins - Finally got the one species I always needed, so super satisfied here
Dasyuromorphs - Being my favourite group of animals on earth I'd appreciate getting more species from this order than anyone else on this forum, but the Tasmanian devil was the only essential species and more than enough to satisfy me
Macropods - Definitely still need the tree kangaroo, will always be down for more terrestrial species but now that we have 3 I think there's fair representation
Bats - Got an Australian species so I'm pretty chuffed about that! Would love to see more bats theoretically but given we only ever get one exhibit species per DLC, I think the slots are best focused elsewhere for a little while

Great that we finally have something besides just diprotodontians! Most will agree on the tree kangaroo still being an obvious omission, but I also think a bilby and a possum of some kind (whether cuscus, brushtail possum or WE glider) would be great to help round them out. Not totally necessary though aside from the roo.

Ratites: Kiwi did complete them for me. No really interest in the rhea

Penguins: I was already fine with our two penguins. But i wouldnt be opposed to getting the rockhopper or gentoo in a coastal or tundra/polar pack, but wouldnt be mad if we dont get penguin Nr.4

Dasyuromorphs: Numbat and/or a Quoll would be really cool to get eventually

Macropods: Absolutely need the tree kangaroo

Bats - a small insectivorous bat would be cool, are those kept in zoos?

Ratites - No more, please.

Penguins - I would like a rockhopper or macaroni penguin to mix with the king penguin. But at the same time, I could understand if we don't get a 4th penguin. 3 species of penguins in a game is already a lot.

Dasyuromorphs - I think we're good.

Macropods - We need a tree kangaroo.

Bats - We needed a flying fox. Now, I think we're good but I would not mind a third species.

  • Ratites: I'd say ratites are good, but the rhea is needed for southern South America rep. Maybe a seriema could work instead? Taxonomy-wise, I'd say there are enough ratites, but I'm not opposed to a rhea if that's the best option for a bird from that region.
  • Penguins: I'm still missing my favorite, the rockhopper penguin, but I don't need it that badly.
  • Dasyuromorphs seem done. I'm not violently opposed to the numbat or quoll, but I think other tiny marsupials should come first, like the bilby and brushtail possum.
  • Macropods: I will be sad if we don't get a tree kangaroo, and they are popular and iconic enough to be essential. I also think the rock wallaby and possibly grey kangaroo are important, but I would not call them essential. I really like the rock wallaby, but the demand is not quite there.
  • Bats: I'm not mad about getting another bat, but I don't want or need a third. There are better options for WE's.
In summary, everything but macropods is done.
