OK. Can anyone help me?

In a nutshell spacesuit: I got asked to scan a planet; Eridani. So not 100% complete I decided to land on the planet (first time scanning) to complete it. It's not breathable. I have my suit on and my helmet on. Yet I take damage - not enough to last more than a minute before I die.

How am I mean to scan this planet?

Apologies but I am pretty much (despite age...) a n00b gamer other than Elite and two other titles... I just don't get it.

On my jurney towards a new gaming computer for Starfield, I have now got all the parts only to forgot to buy RAM.
How much RAM does Starfield really need? Requirements says 16GB for both minimum and recommended, would there be much performance gain for 32GB or am I better off going with 16GB?

First thing that comes to my mind... Either high temperatures or high solar radiation levels on the planet? You should see a warning of either in the lower left HUD.

In either case, just land on the dark side of the planet. Cooler temps, and solar radiation is blocked by the planet.

EDIT: Next thing... are you stepping out of the ship into a boiling liquid surface? If so, land somewhere else. You can see what kind of terrain you'll be landing on, when initially selecting a landing spot (prior to landing). So if you are in a swamp or marsh, for instance... maybe boiling liquid surfaces right under the ship. Each planet has multiple biomes (environment types), so you can hunt around for another type and give that a shot.

If you can afford 32, I recommend it for ALL things. 16 is only "better off" when it comes to the wallet, not performance. That's not to say that many games aren't fine with 16, but not only have I improved performance in a few games going to 32GB RAM, but I've also greatly improved stability.

You just knew that someone was going to do it :)

Ah, OK, I was on the light side... I always try and avoid "The Dark Side" ;)

No, just stepping onto surface; it was Eridani I/One. However, it looked fairly rocky - in fact was next to an abandoned settlement. I'll try again but the message was corrosive atmosphere - it was the cheapest first mission I took so assumed it wouldn't be /too/ difficult - it was onyl 4K credits, more than 50% cheaper than the others.

Many thanks will see what happens

Acquired a ship with a tasty C grade reactor and Grav Drive … and hit a high enough level to unlock some better engines … so rebuilt it into my third Chieftain variant: looking less-and-less like a Chieftain but it’s a beast: crazy shields, 30LY jump range, > 1000 cargo and still hits 98% agility!

(Unfortunately don't have any screenshots left of this one as it's since now been reworked into my own design!)

Also found a colony ship and a planet of clones, cleared a system out of Crimson Fleet and finished the Rangers quest line … loving this game!!

OK, I tried landing on the dark side - same.

It was the cheapest mission of all. On top of that I am getting my aluminium tin foil donkey handed me on a plate. I landed at a 'deserted base' and got fried. First time is when I met a 'hunter' in New Atlantis - got into a conversation with them and then the screen cut and security said I had violated something. Then they shot me to death. Thing is I play a 'clean' character so don't tend to deal in illegal activities.

If I can't take the cheapest mission to scan a planet, what chance do I have!?

PS only just left Atlantis so it's all pretty new to me.

Different suits helms packs and apparel have different resistances to thermal / corrosive / radiation and airborne environmental hazard. Stacking the appropriate gear will circumvent it with enough amount. I believe if you hear a ticking sound your protection amount isn't sufficient and is wearing down. I havnt figured it out completely but that's the gist of it.

It makes sense to have multiple sets of gear. I have combat armor with good physical / energy and the other category (emp or non lethal) but I switch over to other sets and clothing depending on the planet I'm exploring.

My crew of six still suffers with the default layout of the Hopetech Watchdog (which ships like the Crimson Fleet Ghost are built from). No bunks, no toilets (the threat that bucket everyone uses will pose if the ship ever loses gravity is one of the reasons my character never takes off the pressure suit), random clutter blocking the one path to the cockpit on the third level...but it works.

I don't like complex internal layouts...have stolen enough giant ships at this point that I'm sick of spending ten minutes finding the bridges on these things.
I just radically rebuilt mine in NMS.

Killer DM.

Make sure you also wear a pack in addition to the suit and helmet. I think it's necessary to get complete suit protection.

Pack? Like the mining one? I was wearing the jet pack, not the mining pack, will that make a difference (assuming 'pack' is the thing you wear on your back...)

Worst case situation is that your current suit/helmet/pack aren't tough enough for the corrosive environment.

Good news is, I don't think it's possible to fail exploration missions. I've got one I accepted ages ago, and when I landed I was not prepared for what completing the mission would take. I could tell at once.

I've left that mission laying around ever since, and... nobody cares. It'll be there ready to complete when I'm able, no penalty, apparently. (Some delivery or passenger missions do have time limits, though. Just FYI.)

I can't get a screenshot easily, but when you are looking at your personal inventory, you can see your suits and helmets. You can see their stats there on the upper right, for things like radiation, or atmosphere resistance. As you play, you come across higher quality gear, so just equip the highest stat suit you've acquired (you aren't wearing your suit/helmet/pack if it is NOT equipped. You can tell what's equipped by the little white triangle on the corner of the item title on the left hand column). Same with guns and such.

Don't forget to equip and step out of the airlock! :D

Ok, this ship-building thing has got me now. I designed and built my first ship from scratch, and I have to say it was really enjoyable.

I had enough funds to build a pretty decent class B ship. I was at the Deimos shipyard, so all the parts are that style -- very angular sort of stuff. It was quite the process to figure out all the needed modules, and then decide where and how they should attach to each other.

Going on board the first time and seeing how the layout actually worked -- wandering the halls and seeing my crew doing their jobs inside...pretty cool.

I'm sure I can do better, but this first one actually came out pretty well. It's quite formidable in battle. Flying a ship that I personally built into battle is quite a thrill. I shall be doing more of this, once I replenish my funds. I'm nearly out of cash suddenly!

This is the ship.

It should not be that hard. I wore the starting spacesuit for a long time without having much trouble. You do get a new one, and a pack, when you join Constellation as part of the main quest. Maybe you should do that much just to get the equipment.

I took a look at Eridani, though. Eredani is a system, and you didn't say which planet you were on. There are a couple of "deep freeze" moons in the system. Maybe one of those?
