Winter 2023 DLC Speculation

I’m even more sure now that we’ll get the Wild Boar in the next pack. I think it would be remiss of Frontier to give ever continent except Europe their wild pig species. Now that Africa, Asia, North and South America have their pig, the only continent left with a wild pig species is Europe. I think the Wild Boar is a fair shot.
Which means a Eurasia pack is looking very promising. At least, more so than it was yesterday!

I think the wild boar will come but not in the winter dlc. Maybe in the autumn 2024 dlc. Yes, I'm confident!

Tapirs as a whole are but Baird's is more Central American, it only extends into a small area of northwestern SA. The Brazilian tapir (which is also known simply as the South American tapir) is the more iconic species for the continent.

The collared peccary would give us a base game habitat animal that extends far deeper into South America (covering over half the continent) rather than just living on the fringes.
Unless new taxonomy will kick in of course.
There are studies claiming there are 2 species of collared peccary: northern and southern. Imma not write anything, but simply copy zoochat post.

So what it would mean for in-game peccary? From strict gameplay perspective nothing. Frontier really focuses on NA part of this animal and it looks like this fella represent NA version. In this case animal would retain all biome and continent tags. However it would also mean it is yet another animal living on the fringes, just like Baird's Tapir.

To be fair, I'm right there with you. Terrified that tree kangaroos (my #2 most wanted) have missed their final final chance, and still far from convinced that this winter DLC won't be our last one.

But it is nice that optimism generally reigns. It's easy to catch myself dreaming up another year's worth of content, regardless of how likely I think it is deep down.

I just hope that boundless optimism doesn't turn out to be a detriment if support does end sooner than people want/expect, though.
"Terrified" is a strong word but I'm feeling very much the same way. The tree kangaroo is my #1 now pick and seeing all of the chatter focused on pretty much every theme except for one that might reasonably incorporate them is just a bummer. Haha. I'm still holding out hope for an arboreal and/or woodlands animals pack sooner, rather than later, to work 'em in! I'm hoping for another year of support rather than just a pack or two more.

But regardless, I'll be stoked on whatever we get. Just a bummer that one of my top picks feels like it came "so close, yet so far" in the scheme of the game. If only we had thought to just vote for "tree kangaroo" instead of splitting them up! LOL

And FWIW, if/when support does end? I think people will be bummed but I don't think it'll be detrimental. We might see the community shrink a bit as people move on to other games but I do think there's still going to be a vibrant group of creators that'll be fueled by an uptick in modding (and in my case, the stop in creativity that happens every ~2 months or so because I'm anxious about building something that might be re-worked after the new DLC/update drops haha).

Does anyone think the pallas cat would make a good addition to a mountain pack? I feel the need for a mountain feline has already been covered by the big cats.
Yes. Cause it adds variety. We need small cats, it’s a perfect reuse of the sand cat rig, and it’s just a generally cool cat. It deserves as much attention as the sand cat at least, if not more cause it has an extra feature, grumpy mode.

Pallas cat feels like one of the safest possible inclusions at this point. It’s a cat, it’s got meme power, it can build on the sand cat rig, it’s generally well liked and it’s an easy fit for the presumed Mountains theme.

I’ve started toying with the idea of them doing with Mountains what they did with Arid (or technically the reverse) and making it an Asia pack, perhaps even also in name. With an Asia Animal Pack you can keep a lot of the big mountains players (Pallas cat, takin, markhor, wolverine, yak even though it’s not the most popular, monal even though I’ve never seen it as particularly likely) while also allowing room for some other predominately cooler-climate species such as muskox, walrus, sea otter, raccoon dog, golden snub-nosed monkey (ew). Of course, it doesn’t have to be just more cold-natured species, but I do think this setup could kill a lot of birds with one stone (without actually giving any actual birds) and it’s always nice when the packs feel in-season for us northern hemisphere majority.
