Winter 2023 DLC Speculation

Peccary was possibly already planned for the anniversary when arid was planned
True, but there are more American desert animals than the Peccary. Take for instance the White Nosed Coati, Burrowing Owl, Greater Roadrunner, Desert Bighorn Sheep… Just two of those to replace two of the antelopes, a Hamadryas Baboon instead of the Sand Cat, and an Australian or Central Asian desert animal in replacement of dare I say the camel or ass, and this pack would’ve been SO well received.
I know that it was a stealth North Africa pack. But it doesn’t mean it should have been.

Even as a stealth North Africa pack, it still could've had some better choices. Honey badgers, baboons, tortoises, etc. I would've been ecstatic if we had gotten the bald ibis.

I’ve been to slightly over 30 different zoos in nearly every part of the US except for the west coast, and the only time I’ve ever seen a white tailed deer in captivity was at a small rescue zoo in Illinois. Not saying my experience is an objective measure - most definitely not - maybe they’re common somewhere but there are loads of other NA species I’d consider essential before them (at least for the US, I can’t speak from a Canadian nor Mexican perspective)

As burnt out on carnivorans as I am I would consider the NA river otter and the black bear essential (albeit only from a NA perspective), as they’re very common in American zoos large and small. That being said I’d still take nearly any bird over them any day - even if it is something as niche as a roadrunner or a quail. Same goes for the elk, though I wouldn’t consider it as necessary as the bear or the otter. As others have mentioned, NA has no bird species at the moment and every region is sorely lacking in waterfowl.

As for the wolverine, from what I know they aren’t nearly as common as people make them out to be. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think sheer commonality should be the sole reason for selecting a species, and I’d welcome a wolverine to the game for plenty of other reasons - but I certainly wouldn’t consider them essential, except for maybe a local species focused Scandinavian zoo, where they seem to be much more widespread(?).

Disagreed, I don’t think this one is essential.
can you elaborat why? turkey is a very popular and emblematic bird for a area without one, it would be good to know the reasons.
As a iconic animal for NA, yeah it could be seen as essential but as a zoo animal? I don't know.
it's found in multiple zoos, even in the EAZA zoos, so i would say that it is a essential zoo animal.

Its just not a very exciting species to build for and is beaten out by the elk, ABB, wolverine, and others in terms of popularity on my list. I know turkeys are very popular for thanksgiving and in general but I can't see me building for them, despite their captivity status.

Idk the "The focus of the discussion again came to North America." just came across as being very annyoed with it.
Well, "you dont know" is just "you dont know", its not "we dont know", its not "people dont know", its not "earth dont know", its just your business. All the people on this forum , can talk about anything they want to talk about. As long as it's not insulting others. As for what people's opinions make you think and feel, that's just your own business. As you like.

It confuses me how it went from "we need birds" to "we need an NA bird"...
I could think of a bunch more globally represented birds than a turkey or a road runner.
And are we callling the Greater Flamingo the european bird representive? That seems unfair even for me 😂 It doesn't represent "my" europe in the slightest.

Can't we just request what's globally represented in zoos? Given the realistically limited slots and the small number of birds, nichè animals seem just to add to the bad side of representation.

And yes, I know, I know, Oceania got nichè birds on a global perspective. But with the Kiwi it was iconic for the whole country and I personally never had voted for the blue penguin, sorry.

Obviously birds are ridiculosly underepresented, but all other continents have atleast one, to some extend. So you can make an arguement for NA needing a bird the most
