The Buckyball Racing Club Presents: Close Encounters of the Bucky Kind (Swift-16 Championship, Race 8)

Well, after taking Haulier than Thou on a voyage of minor engineering tweaks yesterday morning, in attempt to get her jump range to remove one jump off my route, I managed to get there... with careful fuel management. :) Along the way, I finally unlocked Bill Turner so I can lighten my life support systems, only to discover I need to make nice with the Alliance to actually visit Alioth... so that won't happen in this race.

During my play windows to last night and this morning, I was plagued by that frustratingly obscured jump out of Robert Aitken Orbital... except for once, which was plagued by bad approaches and a messed up landing. Came within two seconds of my time on the board, but didn't beat it. :(

Well, there's always tonight, and as much of tomorrow as time allows. :)

Yikes. Time progresses faster than I would prefer... I sure hope I manage to get a run or two done before the race is over.
Yesterday saw me way too exhausted to get something done - falling asleep in my seat, waking up a few hours later, stiff and cold, crawling into bed to sleep some more hours.

Just a mini update for this morning. I've only had a few entries since yesterday's leaderboard update, seems everyone is gearing up for tonight and hoping for less obscured jumps that there were last night. There's been some nice improvements across the board though and a special mention to Cmdr Timber McWolf who made the biggest improvement of the day and knocked a huge chunk of time off their run.
And Sulu who simply said "boring but faster" :D

Good luck with the final day's racing Cmdrs. Remember that your run needs to start by 23:59:59 in game time today Sunday 3rd of December, to be valid. I'll be accepting entries until tomorrow night.

Sounds like it was a frustrating time with obscured jumps last night.

I had the luck of a clear run first thing, an unlimited run that'll take too much effort to better so I'm done there. Don't mind where it ends up, it was ridiculously satisfying to do.
Might turn my attention back to regulation later after all.

Much as I try, I cannot improve on my regulation time 😞 But I finally managed to rip some hull plates off the Cobra coming out of a station...

So that damp thumping sound is me throwing in the towel. Big thank you to @Ozric for hosting and putting up with my inability to use imgur 😄.

But also thank you to everyone in the BRC for their good humour and camaraderie, it's been a hoot!

Thanks to Ozric for hosting this race, it's been equal parts frustration with orbital mechanics and joy of trying to squeeze more performance out of my flying. This one has given me a chance to really work on improving my gravity braking skills, which I've found somewhat lacking for some time.
Now that (I think) the deadline has passed I figured I'd share my bloopers. The full run will have to wait until the leaderboards are up.:censored:

Seems that my "2nd attempt is always the fastest" rule of thumb no longer applies. First Cobra run was somewhat okay with only one messed up approach and an obscured jump (Borealis is a big planet...), 2nd attempt was slower and "third time's the charm" I missed one stop.
But still a lot of fun and refreshingly little setup required, so thanks a lot for hosting Ozric!

Well, after a weekend of increasingly frantic flying, I have been unable to better my existing times. As well as the DBX, I also tried an Orca - which was surprisingly close, and my regular Buckyballing Dolphin, albeit with everything thrown off including the thrusters and power plant. The smaller, lighter replacements meant it was slow and could boost about once a week, but it could jump from Andrhimi to Iota Hydri. The tiny fuel tank meant it was running on fumes when it got there, though. However, its best time was still about 30 seconds behind the DBX and I was running out of time. Especially when so many starts were ending in the rings around Big Pappa's Base...

Route was always Kured - Andrhimi - Iota Hydri - Firdaus - HR 706 - Kured except for my very last run (starting at 10 to midnight) after I'd found HR 706 obscured coming out of Robert Aitken, so I tried the reverse route, which was going quite well until (of course!) I hit the rings at Big Pappa's...

So huge thanks to @Ozric for hosting, well done to all of you and o7 to all the commanders I bumped into out on the course, occasionally head-on in the mail-slot! :D

I shall now await the final results with keen interest, hoping I've managed to stay out of the one-point club this time!
