Can anyone tell me why we can't get a deer?

What about it? It’s not a priority or interest to me.

Not saying it cant be for someone elses.

People gotta learn that everyone’s opinions are for just them. They can be different. It doesn’t mean they’re trying to force everyone to think the same way
I'm sorry if it came across wrong... the only reason I said what about pudu is because I have heard of it in zoos more often than the Marsh deer.
I agree with the opinion thing. I would go so far as to say another canid being lowest of low priorities is also just an opinion...

Ironic that not a single american has mentioned the fact that its illegal to ship deer across state borders, meaning that keeping them is more or less a pain, that exotic deer especally have a real and literal barrier for distriburion and that the AZA in general recomends not keeping deer species due to the risk of them spreading diseases.

Deer literall, cannot enter, exit or cross state borders in the Us, making it just a question of time when deer arnt kept in the Us anymore at all

It didn’t come across wrong. There’s just been so much of trying to “correct “ someone elses opinion of late by a horde of people, and my tired brain felt i needed to say it . It wasn’t meant you anymore more than anyone else.

Apologies if it seemed harsh or abrupt.

Yeah, you're right. I feel like I have been on the receiving end but I have definitely given it to others even more than I have received it!
It didn't seem harsh at all! :)

So, deer in the US are NOT allowed to cross state lines.
I now consider myself very lucky to have seen and interacted with Sika! I wonder how long those girls' lineage has been in our state...
That is also good to know for building realistic zoos. I think we may want to start a thread of wildlife laws that affect zoos for realistic building reference?
I would start it, but I'm not good at being thorough enough... and I don't have a long enough attention span.

I realized once again that what you take for granted to everyone may be alien to others. The zoo in the city where I live has 7 species of deer and used to have 9.It's not the largest collection of deer in my country, and it certainly doesn't compare to ungulate collectors like tierpark berlin. But having seven species of deer in one zoo may seem like an incredible thing to friends in some parts of the world. This is partly what happened to ABB and the golden monkeys.

I actually adore deer! I think they are so graceful. And their antlers are way cooler than horns.
So yes, I think we should have alot more.
but, (and it applies to canids too!) I could pretend that the PZ roster is limited for some reason that would happen irl. My PZ zoos don't have bat-eared foxes because they are not available for some reason. and fortunately, that only applies to my franchise zoos :) Since sandbox allows "mods". I hope for as many Frontier species as possible though!

I would love the following: Siberian Musk Deer, Reeves Muntjac (my local zoo keeps them with Red Pandas too), Pere David's Deer, and Chital or Sika (pretty spots!). A Wapiti would be cool too. Hog Deer are cute also!

meanwhile I will be lucky enough to see more than 7 ungulates in a zoo let alone deer. that is one of the most interesting things about reading the replies on this forum in general discovering what other global zoos look like

I know that they're technically not real deer. But I'd love a Musk deer. It's both small and has fangs. And since it's not a deer it's be a completely new taxa, aside from Mouse deer and cetaceans, which I don't think we're getting, I think it's the last major ungulate taxa were missing.

Probably one of my unpopular but personally really like animals is the Sika deer. These are actually really common in both big and small zoos from what I have seen and would help give Temperate Asia and specifically Japan quite a boost. I'll admit they aren't too unique from the other deer we have but I think they are a pretty staple zoo animal that would fill a nice niche for a future clone pick.

At my local zoo, they have an abundance of white tail (including a piebald family) in a walk through exhibit and they are sorry friendly and lick the guests. Whitetail are first priority for me, but I would love a muntjac or marsh deer
