What's the Brand New Feature for ED in 2024?

Perhaps they could combine portions of the ring models and effects with the jets of white dwarfs and add accretion discs to black holes.
They could even do it quietly so we could have the fun of discovering them for ourselves.

Hmm... definitely would be cool, it would fit Frontier's definition of a "new feature," and would be an utter letdown for all those expecting paid expansion level features for free. Sounds good to me! :D

In all seriousness, I'm hoping that the "new feature" will finally be the obviously missing on-foot Guardian and Thargoid content. Don't really expect it, but I'm still hoping.

Sure, you can choose the lazy way out and not model G effects. But that would break the established rules of the Elite universe. Stations spin because there is no tech for artificial gravity. Walking in outposts is done with magnetic boots. Acceleration has effects on ship's pilot--if you accelerate your ship in any direction you will shift in the pilot seat and if you pull a hard turn in orbital glide you'll black out. Fall damage is a thing in Odyssey and you cannot disembark on planets that have more than 3G surface gravity (this makes high G-s officially too dangerous to work in!). If you board a ship, it boosts and that has no effect on you whatsoever, how does that work? At the very least it should pin you to the nearest bulkhead and incapacitate you.

I think the first rule of any good sci-fi and fantasy is internal consistency: establish in-world rules and stick to them. Elite already has the problem with ships ramming into things at 500+ m/s and not killing the pilot (OK, pilots are cyborgs, Remlock suits, special seat you're locked into, yadda-yadda--I can kinda handwave it away), it does not need to brake things even more blatantly.
That is all just headcanon. Fact is that ED plays very much like a normal shooter and that's why feet are glued to the ground. Not spinning stations or planetary gravity. It's accessible for mainstream.

If you limit EVA to repairing damaged satellites or nav beacons (or sabotaging them) etc then there's a lot of possible mission variations right there.

i personally would vote for investing the available development ressources in improving functionality which is great in Elite and makes it unique in the market of space game rather than introducing new functionality like bas building or ship interieurs. this could be more stellar object variety, more stellar research, more fauna/flora on landable planets ....
base building and ship int. is available in Starfield, X4 which i have played and found boring after a short period of fascination.
the big undiscovered galaxy with research is what make Elite so fascinating for me
My opinion is that bug fixes and QOL improvements should be made in an ongoing and concurrent fashion to new developments. Though I would be happy if the new feature was related to space exploration, maybe some new phenomena or some system wide dynamic events, which the Stargoid event showed is possible to a degree. One of my personal wishes for an update to planets is to have the bands of cloud layers of gas giants animate, similar to how we see the stars do, but in the way that gas giants would. I think that would look awesome:

I think racetracks would be a terrible idea with very low overall appeal, and I don't see why new ship designs wopuld be needed to handle them.
I think you'd be surprised at how popular this sort of thing is currently and could become. However, I agree that a specific racing update would seem a bit odd, which is why I think it would be better to incorporate racing friendly aspects to a base-building upgrade, just being able to lay down paths/roads in way that can be configured and follow ground contours like hills etc.. would likely be enough to begin with, and adding some sort of checkpoint system shouldn't be too difficult as we already have tresspass & no fire zone checks implemented in the game already.

I agree. Race tracks is one thing that would integrate really nicely with base building. Either circuits around a player base, or if bases can be placed close enough from each other, point-to-point cross-country races. A racing-specific SRV (eg light-weight armorless, weaponless, shieldless, fast Scorpion variant) would nail the deal.

If the feature update is going to be NMS/Starfield style base building and that's a very big IF, then sure it's not such a big stretch to add stuff like race tracks.

However I think we need to be more realistic, there are plenty of dedicated racing games out there. Adding custom ground races to an already niche space game that only has 2 types of ground vehicle sounds like an even less popular version of CQC.

Mhm, I doubt race tracks are really needed. Checkpoints, yes. Checkpoints and spraypaint.

Like I said, SRV racing is more popular than one might think. CQC isn't a great example because that was a solution to a problem that didn't really exist, when it comes to SRV racing, there are regular meetings and races that have created a need from within the game that is seeking a solution.

As far as other racing games go, you are completely correct, but it isn't as relevant as it might seem, there are Minecraft servers hosting thousands of players who engage in PVP, and racing, as can be seen by this video, which is interesting in the way that they recreated a real-life track in Minecraft, which, if the tools were available in Elite to do with Base-building would also be possible, and a lot more fun I might add.

BTW; I know some hate the SRV but I love it, and drviing around in it feels like an open world Stunt Car Racer. With the variability of gravity and settings, it's not a huge surprise that players of Elite who are also racing fans take to it IMO.

You’re not the only one who thinks that - and I think it’s quite cool that when Geoff Crammond started writing SCR it was initially a sci-fi style buggy where you looked out of the cockpit and could see your big front wheels, and you were driving over a procedural landscape 😁 He found that the best bits were when you jumped off the top of an incline and got airborne, so decided to re-theme the game around that.

I’ve been doing a fair bit of racing in Space Docker VR recently and the new Flight Simulator freebie expansion for Dune and an important bit for me is the ability to quickly restart a race when I’ve messed up - this wouldn’t be feasible for Elite’s multiplayer environment but I suppose the solo time trial player wouldn’t be the target market. I’d be very pleased if live game circuits could be replicated in the training menus though, like the ship handling scenario.

I don't think it's a good idea. More of the same, I think is never a good option for any game. The idea is for new players to arrive and those who left to return. We already know that those who are still in Elite do not need more than what already exists.

I would love to read the source for that because that's crazy, it's exactly when you jump off a cliff or something and get big air which reminds me of it the most!

GC did some interviews with magazines like Retro Gamer in which he talks about SCR’s development - there should be sources in the wiki article for SCR 👍
