What's the Brand New Feature for ED in 2024?

I mean that if the new feature were a paid DLS, and it were ship interiors, both groups of players will be interested, since it affects the ships that both groups share.
I guess in that case players will be gifted the Odyssey DLC when they buy the Interiors DLC.

Like I said, SRV racing is more popular than one might think. CQC isn't a great example because that was a solution to a problem that didn't really exist, when it comes to SRV racing, there are regular meetings and races that have created a need from within the game that is seeking a solution.

As far as other racing games go, you are completely correct, but it isn't as relevant as it might seem, there are Minecraft servers hosting thousands of players who engage in PVP, and racing, as can be seen by this video, which is interesting in the way that they recreated a real-life track in Minecraft, which, if the tools were available in Elite to do with Base-building would also be possible, and a lot more fun I might add.

BTW; I know some hate the SRV but I love it, and drviing around in it feels like an open world Stunt Car Racer. With the variability of gravity and settings, it's not a huge surprise that players of Elite who are also racing fans take to it IMO.

CQC was a good idea but a bit barebones and should have been free to play to encourage new players. It could have done well but was never supported or updated after release. It was however “on brand” and a far more sensible proposition than race tracks are.

You can’t compare Elite’s SRV racing fan base to modded servers and maps of possibly the most popular game in the world. Minecraft by design is already geared towards unlimited creativity and is accessible to just about anyone. Elite is not.

I'm wondering if they are ending "Odyssey" and moving to "A new hope" season (for a nominal fee of course) ;)

CQC was free. It wasn't worth continuing as a separate entity.

There's many free-to-play games with cosmetics and sometimes a premium subscription option that are doing well. CQC didn't get enough support and development to be good.

CQC (racing) should be in the main game, not a separate game mode imo. Players need tools to put markers on the map and scifi buoys to creature custom race tracks.

The business model:
  1. Develop an appealing expansion with lots of new and improved content.
  2. Release the expansion for free.
  3. Generate hype and promote it
  4. Sell the game with a temporary discount
  5. Optional cosmetics shop and subscription
This works well for certain developers. So it's absolutely a viable business model.

The main issue being some folks didn't really come here for PvP, it had low numbers so Fdev had no incentive to spend time and resources on it.

I recently played a bit of CQC, and to me there are several things that need fixing before you'll get more players:

Better matchmaking, where high-level players and newbies are evenly split between the two sides in team deathmatch.

A sorted friends list when creating a team or group or whatever it's called, and text filtering. (Saw someone scrolling through about 20 pages of friends looking for one. Several times over.)

The ship outfitting is backwards. Experienced players have access to a wide range of gear, while beginners are stuck with almost nothing. The way our matches went, you'd be better off putting newbies in better ships and vets in basic ones. Obviously restricting gear as you advance through levels is never going to be acceptable, so I have no idea how you fix that one unless it's 'get a thousand people playing and matches can be organised by rank'

(More complicated) A counter in Odyssey stations like Frontline, where you sign up for CQC, go through a door and enter the game mode. Might get a lot more people at least trying it, because right now access to CQC is almost hidden in a basement behind a sign warning of feral tigers.

I would like to see something like a motorbike/hoverbike which could also be used for exploration. No shields, no cargo hold - only to be used to sample plants, racing and perhaps a wild attack on a settlement.
A bike would either need a size 1 compartment or no compartment at all. Lots of liveries to sell. Isn't that an incentive for FDev? ;)

Difficult, if games usually have 2/3 players.

Even if there are 4, doing it is difficult, if you have 1 newb and 3 much more experienced people, but I understand point.

"Navy missions" like that where you get supplied the small fighter instead of using your own ship, getting launched from a battlecruiser has been part of many people's dreams.txt for over a decade now.
That is the first time I recall seeing that idea in these forums, I can see it having a certain nostalgic appeal to the veterans of certain Lucas franchise games and might be interesting in Elite as well.

I’ve certainly mentioned the idea in the past 👍

After, what, 15+ years, the chances are that every suggestion has been already made by someone at some time in the past, but while we have a search button, searching through years of forum posts is hard because keywords tend to bring up hundreds of unrelated posts.
