Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

That was nice. I took off from Martuuk's place and there were some normal people floating around in the chat. I think a newbie had experienced some gankstering.

I was really only there to check around and maybe pin the shields blueprint but it made me realise that I was kinda wasting my time engineering shields off Martuuk and thrusters off Farseer the first time around. I was vaguely aware of there being differences in grade levels between engineers but it didn't sink in until I saw Martuuk's 2 or 3 grade shields and decided to check the engineers list on Inara. I'd prefer to hold off and only start engineering modules when they can go to grade 5. I'll hunt certain materials when the mood takes me, but it's by no means a priority.

I suspect this is where I will have to leave this particular CG.

Almost entirely afk, alt tabbed, occasionally checking in to see how much commodity was available. Don't think the execution was quite right somehow 😹

I've used my generic Cobra setup of medium multi-cannons and small beam lasers since I started playing in the furlough years of 2020, but it quickly became irritating this time around as other ships have breezed through the beams from mere feet away.

I decided to test a new configuration by placing small and medium beams on the left, and small and medium multi-cannons on the right. Fortunately I was interdicted by a Harmless weirdo NPC while admiring Stein B so I got to quickly test the setup a second time.

Both weapons feel strange and lopsided, so that's a problem.

Beams - It requires more accuracy but it at least feels more efficient than blasting out two beams only to use one of them. It may balance out and be of no benefit.
Multi-cannons - This feels very wrong since kinetic weapons have the little reticles and now they're skewed to the right while bobbing around. I don't like it.

I'll try it though. I've only had a couple of quick tests and mostly done courier missions so far while I safely build up cash and rep. Combat is the obvious next move.

One thing I considered while looking at the pics though, is that I could swap the mediums around so that the thermal and kinetic weapons are of equal distance from each other while making the whole thing feel less lopsided. The gap would still be only two thirds the distance of the small hard points on the bottom.

I'll experiment anyway.

If you're going to be doing some combat, I suggest trying a Viper MK III - it has similar hardpoints to the Cobra MK III, but bunched up in a much narrower closter, so they all point more or less at the same point.

The Viper itself is also much more maneuverable, which will also help keeping those guns on target.

The Viper MK IV flys more like the Cobra MK III, but I'm not sure if the hardpoints are as neatly bunched up as on the Viper MKIII.

Oh, and that Viper III is wearing a body kit, but I promise it is the MK III

i found a couple of bios, on the thargoid spire site, grass and a weirld looking bulb plant. it was scarey walking toward the spire thou in the dark, and seen all that green mist around didn't help. made 22 million for it..... anybody want to give it a try .

Question:
when is a light not a light...

answers on a postcard please.:)

Thanks. I'm more open to trying different ships this time around so I'll put it on my list. She sounds pretty good.

I haven't played much this weekend but a single mission spam will finish off the Cobra outfitting.

Do you use fixed mounted weapons?

Patch notes are out...

Not much revealed in there that affects me much, if I'm honest.

Ah well, onwards.

I wanted to finish my gun today which I may be able to do if there's no delay in the game coming back up.

In the meantime, I may have to (shock, horror) play something else or, even worse, do RL stuff.

Yeah. I don't like the idea of gimbled weapons on small ships because it's feel like an admission of defeat when it comes to aiming skills. I did take a serious look at it recently though because the Cobra's small hardpoints are so widely positioned.

Then I saw complaints about NPC's spamming chaff and I just thought 'nah'. Not worth the bother.
Well, my aiming skills are that good, I need at least gimballed weapon mounts... 👓

  • Introduced "Gravity Well" cockpit message to replace "Slow Down" when travelling at excessive speed near celestial bodies.
Oooh, I like that.

Worth the 30Gb update, I think.

Though I hate the way it takes so long to slow down and there's no way to recover until you've passed your destination. I'd like to assume that's a bug but the problem's existed since I started playing the game.

That's not a bug, not sure what problem you are talking about here but if you approach your target to fast at multiple times the speed of light, well you are going to overshoot, you need to learn to control your speed when approaching and that's not that hard to do.
