The game hasn't even released yet, and all you guys talking about the end of days like you expect Frontier to go under within 5 years. Have you really so little confidence in them as a company? Instead of clamoring for a guarantee of what YOU get IF they have to shut down their servers, why not put your efforts into promoting the game and sharing the wonders of this new and exciting galaxy with as many people as you can, thereby ensuring its longevity?

If anything kills off this game, it will be at least in part this type of negative bet-hedging. On behalf of Frontier and those of us who know this game will be great fun and a total success (in spite of the over-blown reactions to one PR mistake) please stop planning for its failure. You only invite the realization of those fears.

Edit: When I say "you guys" I mean everyone who posted stuff like this since last Friday. This is hardly the first post of its kind, and is beyond irrelevant given the Newsletter that was posted today, and the current state of the game (PRE-RELEASE!).

As an example, Auto Assault servers went offline in just over a year. 14 months after release by a, then, major publisher. Your counter-argument is irrelevant.

Maybe not in the short term, but I am talking years hence. Surely then, they will be off one way or another?

Fair enough... Maybe in 10-20 years when they move on to the next Elite. Sure, but They've made it clear that it not going to happen with in the foreseeable future. Then Braben said He'd give up the netcode. But honestly at that point I think there will be bigger better (new elite perhaps) games out there... I hope anyways.

Nuclear war? The unexpected can always happen, and a contingency plan can be good consolation in the event of disaster.

Maybe we should have them hold off further game development until they can purchase fallout shelters in which to store redundant servers across the UK. You never know when in an apocalyptic world-shattering disaster, if you might want to take a break for some good gaming. I support your plans!

David says he will take regular backups and if the worst happened he would release them...

Now under any normal circumstance I would say that's crap....BUT...David is not running Steam.... Elite Dangerous Is his game and I don't doubt for a minute he would regulary take backups home or at least has access to it all 24/7.
Unlike steam if they did go down we all know we would wake up one day and it would be.... JUST GONE
I seem to really believe he would rather want to get his dream back out there again rather than let it just die ?

Depending on how many people push the refund issue with the CC or Bank Frontier could find itself cash strapped faster than you think.

David said in the Q & A yesterday that, in the event of server take down, he would release a copy of the game from one of his backups.

/thread.

I think I am quite entitled to ask the question given the size of my investment. I am quite happy to enthuse about the game if I feel secure in it.

And these are questions that are not negative but are constructive.

It is naive to think that Frontier will always keep the servers running.

You are entitled. But you know that these are not questions that will get answers, so my point is why ask them? And again, planning for the failure of a cause you support is the OPPOSITE of constructive.

How is your example pertinent to this, a game with a history, fan-base, development strategy, and style unlike any other? If you want to keep E: D from being like [insert name of failed game I've never heard of here] then stop comparing the two and focus on what makes it great! It's negative comments, posts, and press that will be harmful from a PR perspective. So again my point is to cut it out.

Thanks!

For the record, I've asked for a refund, but I don't want one: I want solid reassurance that there will still be a game when the servers are taken down.

This. That is all we can hope for. Regardless of my 14 month doomsday, historically accurate, scenario.

Adults like to think ahead, that's what gets bills paid and college for the kids covered.

The escrow thing isn't a bad idea, but it does have some costs, both for the service and for FDs time in making regular submissions.

I'd point out though that your kickstarter pledge is not an investment, it's more like a donation. IANAL

That that's a fine line. I didn't do kickstarter on ED, I waited until premium beta was available in their store. Though I'll re-iterate, offline mode is not a deal breaker for me despite my posts. I'm merely trying to bring attention to the fanbois that it's not all about current internet connection, but when the servers are no longer available.

That being said, I KS backed SC for a tidier sum than the premium beta cost me here. So rest assured, I still have my chance at being burned.
