New Ships 2024

explor3.gif

I'm gonna have a wild stab in the dark with . . . . Imperial Explorer
We've had a combat, we've had trader/miner, we haven't had an explorer and the Imp ships seem to lack anything you could call dedicated in this respect.
If I could wish for a ship, . . . .
I would like the Merlin.

Exciting times :)

What do you think the tradeoff/dump stat will be for the new explorer ship? That seems to be the strategy for the new ships being unveiled. Something is undertuned to make the ship a perfectly viable option but not automatically the best ship for its job.

For the P2 it’s the power plant and distributor, which are on the low side for 6 hardpoints and 6 utility slots. For the T8 it’s the thrusters. While it’s agile overall, taking pips out of ENG makes the blue zone retreat like a frightened turtle to the bottom of the throttle display.

Mediocre hull, only 2 or 3 utility mounts. . . . . a guess

Really undersized FSD.

Hadn't spotted that about the T8 but then with what I have fitted to it I haven't done anything other than set the PIPs to 3-3-0.
I was going to say it has the supercruise agility of the T7 after I barely had to do anything to beat an NPC interdiction today.

An undersized FSD is the one thing we can guarantee won't be true about a new explorer. Frontier has been very consistent in their stance that the ships they consider "explorers" prioritize jump range.

If memory serves, FDev did not let the Sidewinder be part of the ship-launchable ships (also known as SLFs) as they encountered problems when one ship took aboard another ship and not a dedicated SLFs. I think they termed it 'nested ships' as part of the problem. Now, years later, we can always ask if they are closer to solving this problem or not.

Whatever the 2 new ships will turn out to be, I can't really see either of them being Imperial or Federation. I don't think they would want to force players to grind rank for new ship designs.

New Mid-sized Passenger style ship that is a good exploration variant would be nice. Call it the Manatee/Marlin/Dugong etc.

I hope one of the 2 remaining new ones will be a proper medium multi-role that’s a better multi-role than the Python, with a bit less firepower and durability than the Python.

Maybe something like the python’s internals with the speed and jump range of a krait 2 and durability of a phantom, and just 2L/2M hard points, or maybe if they’re feeling generous 2L/2M/2S 😃

Ahh... given that their stated design focus for these new ships is to find specific blind spots in the current spread of options and fill them, I'm afraid "medium ship that can do a bit of everything" doesn't seem very likely 🙂

I see no reason why we could not get ships from each faction that do not require rank. The Alliance ships have never required any, and the Vulture/imperial Eagle exist. For or all we know, they could even throw a complete ringer and remove all the rank requirements for ships as part of their rework of Powerplay. I absolutely agree, though, that they will not make any new ship that is rank dependent. It would conflict with Frontier's early access business model in regard to the new ships- who would buy a new ship with real money if they then had to grind in game to fly it?

A medium passenger ship is one of the niches I wondered whether they would fill (and hope they do) - this just does not look like a Saud Kruger, or indeed like a passenger vessel in general.

ships that can only do existing gameplay in game mechanics that can easily be done by existing ships is not interesting to me.

ships that offer new game play is interesting.

flyable, expandable, craftable dredger ships.

such ships would potentially create all kinds of new game play and involve new mechanics as well as the familiar basic mechanics.

in an alternate reality, that would be part of the remaining new ship reveals.

Oops, somehow missed the tease shot from earlier. Nevermind. Is 07 actually a large pad?

ETA: pad 7 is medium, as I'd realise if I read the thread properly. Sigh.
