DLC18 discussion and predictions

I like crowned sifaka's but i feel like frontier would probably do coquerel's sifaka cuz its the most iconic color scheme and stuff. Like when people think of sifaka's i feel like thats what they look like
Mabye? Tbh im not sure if i would consider sifakas iconic in the sense that people have their color schemes in mind. Like i knew they are a combination of cream white, brown and black but if you showed me pictures of them two days ago and asked me which one is which i would have had to guess. Idk maybe they are more well known in the states because of that one show and im totally wrong here.

Going by the dictionary thing the crowned seems like the one they go with, on the other hand their local zoo they worked with before keeps coquerels so id say both have a decent chance

Cool occasion to come out my old template about this idea, if you want to play around : View attachment 402142View attachment 402143
Did my own version of this because I'm bored. Some slots I had a hard time even picking anything, while others had a few good options

Tbf "Crowned" could be used for several other species of animals or just used as a generic term, or used for the Red-Crowned crane

Its an american thing, a coquerels is the mascot of a popular zoo show so its much more well known to ex animal kiddies over there

The more days pass I really hope we don't get the sifaka. It's entire selling point is the jumping behavior... with our luck, they wouldn't add it because "it's just another lemur". And ever if they do... it really is just another lemur... and we really don't need four largely identical anything...
Sifaka moves uniquely compared to all other Primates, so it's pretty far from identical in concept. If they just slapped a Sifaka model on Lemur animations and called it a day, then that very much defeats the point.

While it is in the Dictionary, it's a lot of work for animations that you can't really use as a base for future species, whether continuing, or if moving on to PZ2 (the Crowned Sifaka is pretty much it, and it's not a common suggestion).

I do agree that it's probably not happening. I want it, but I'm happy that it was at least seriously considered, no matter how brief that might have been.

If we were going to get a Sifaka, what species would yall want??
The Metawishlist is massively in favour of Coquerel's. Overall it's also more present in zoos, even though Crowned has a few more places in Europe.

Coquerel's has a bit more exposure in media including Disney's Dinosaur. It's also the typical Sifaka for documentaries. Even if you don't know what it's called, there's a pretty good chance Coquerel's is the one you've seen.

Kirk, Damara & Cavendish also don't exist for the Dik-dik. Being put on at the same time, it's hard not to see them as the same situation. It could be a Silver or Salt's Dik-dik, but Kirk's is the only one suggested on the metawishlists at all.

Similarly Coquerel's is the consistent Sifaka to go for from the Metawishlists, with Crowned, and briefly Diademed, being significantly rarer suggestions.

Plucking ungulates and carnivores from the bottom as filler is one thing, but going for obscure versions of fundamentally new stuff doesn't look like something we've seen from recent years (I guess the Siamang, but even that was in the top 50 of its time).

Gonna make a Madagascar exhibit, the set is finally complete, African spurred, Sifaka, 3 lemurs and a fossa. Just waiting for Nile
Spurred Tortoise comes from North Africa, I'm guessing you're thinking Radiated?

Aldabra is the Seychelles, which is pretty far from Madagascar, but is a closer idea. There is a "reintroduction" program for them on Madagascar, but they diverged from the recently extinct Madagascan species 4 million years ago.

Imagine if they called Kirk Dik dik, Dik Dik and callrf Coqureles sifaka, just Sifaka

The lack of a name doesn't necessarily mean that it can't be Coquerel's. The dik-dik didn't have one when it was found at the same time + Cuvier's isn't in the dictionary for the dwarf caiman.

Man, I don't care how 'different' they are, a sifaka on top of three lemurs is not what I want.

Edit: That said, if I get my baboon the rest isn't all that important to me. I'd be happy with another antelope, too, if it turns out to be a dik-dik or impala or whatever else. And I have to admit, I like the idea of the spurred tortoise. I'd prefer the leopard tortoise, but I recognise the ubiquity of the spurred in non-Oceanian collections, and it's a fine substitute.
